  1. I was at the BC/Lumberton scrimmage and was surprised to see many of Dayton's coaches scouting Lumberton. I did not think coaches scouted opponents for scrimmages.
  2. Easy, easy Treasure, I am not trying to degrade the defense at all. They did do a better job than last year. There is a new defensive coordinator working with them this year and the improvement is apparent. I did see the two fumbles that BC recovered and one was inside the red zone. I could not tell what caused the fumble. A hit or mishandling of the ball. Either way it was good heads up for the defender to see it and recover it. Yes Lumberton did beat us last year 48-7. That was last year and a different set of boys playing. The defense was not our biggest problem. We did hit better than last year but it is hard for a 160-175 pound boy to take it to a 220-230 pounder. I do not know the weights of any of the players but that is what it looked like to me. Hey I think the defense did good considering we were playing a 4A team with bigger players. I'm just having a problem with the spread working at BC, that's all. JMO
  3. With the rains we have been getting lately, how is the work progressing on the stadium in Port Neches. I have not seen any updated pictures in a few days. Has the steel for the press box arrived?
  4. If they still play on Thursday then they will only have two days to work on what they learned in the scrimmage today. When does school start?
  5. I was at the scrimmage but I arrived a little late. The score was 1-1 when I got there. Lumberton is much bigger than BC. Their offensive line manhandled BC for most of the plays that I saw. BC's defense did look better than last year but Lumberton was too big to stop them for short gains. Lumberton gained 5-10+ yards on most caries. BC did get through a few times and stop them for no gain. Lumberton did not pass much but they did not look good at it. BC's offense is still suspect. However, the big defensive players that Lumberton has may have been the problem. Lumberton was in the BC backfield on almost every play. BC did not run the ball with any consistency. Most runs were for no gain. There was only a couple of passes that I remember being completed. One was a side line pass that went for no gain. The other completion was for a big gain. The play was executed very well. BC's defence was better than last year but Lumberton was much bigger and hard to bring down. BC's offense needs a lot of work still. If the line can learn to block better and give the quarterback some time maybe he wouldn't have to hurry up his passes and be able to complete a few. The running backs did not have much room to run at all. I think the spread is a very good offense if it is ran the correct way and if you have the right personnel to run it. I think your line needs to be big and be able to block well. I am not sure that BC has that type of personnel. Remember PNG tried it last year and did not do very well. The went back to the power game and won 7 of their next 8.
  6. I just wish we would beat somebody. I think we will have some wins this year. If I had to pick just one that would be WOS because we have never beaten them before. And if we beat them I know we would have a good team and win a lot of games.
  7. I know that steroids do exist but how often they are used I have no way of knowing. I am sure they were used by some until it was determined that they are dangerous. They are probably still being used by some. It was determined that cigarette smoking is dangerous to ones health and look at how many still smoke. As for the scholarship for the player in question, I do not know him personally but I did have one email exchange with him about a different mater not pertaining to steroids. He seemed like a good kid as far as one can tell from a email but I know that is no way to judge ones character. I did talk to his principal about the steroid incident and was told that he was a good student and great kid but he just made a huge mistake. He paid a price by missing his senior year and will have to do some jail time also I believe. I do not think he should be punished the rest of his life because of it. He is only a kid. I am not saying give everyone one free shot at using illegal drugs but some NFL players have tested positive and are still playing after a rehab. If a junior college or university wants to take a chance on a kid then let them do so. He is only a high school athlete. Pete Rose was punished for life but he is a professional. This is just my opinion. If anyone wants to disagree with me then that is fine with me. You certainly have a right to your opinion just like everyone else, this is just mine. What is important here is to try to stop anyone else from using steroids. Maybe the fact that one local student is being sent to jail for 15 days and having to pay a fine of $1000 will ward off any other potential users. The testing will help also.
  8. I don't know what equipment it takes to test for steroids. If it is a urine sample that is analyzed then it would be pretty easy to administer. If the schools could purchase the equipment then it would pay for itself in short order. The school nurse could run the test. Even if it is a blood test the nurse could administer the test. This is just a thought. I have no idea what kind of expense this would entail. If all athletes could be tested on a regular basis then the use of steroids would drop for sure.
  9. Please do not judge the whole team by the actions of a few. No one knows how many were involved but don't jump to conclusions about this please. The school district is not proud of what has happened and does not condone it. Remember the other athletes and don't degrade them also. I'm not saying that you are and if i spoke out of line then I apologise to you.
  10. What about an orange county game of the week? I heard some talk about that earlier. Has anything developed?
  11. I don't know. They did not play last year , but I hear tell that they are playing this year. ;D
  12. Sounds like PNG is doing well. It must be exciting for the kids on the new field.
  13. There are several that come to mind. In the late 60's or early 70's Hebert was playing in a semifinals game in the astrodome against San Antonio Robert E Lee. SA had a very good team but was having trouble in the secondary against Hebert's excellent QB. Late in the game SA scored to take the lead with very little time left. Here comes Hebert passing down the field like it was just routine. When they were about to score a SA defender finally got to the QB and hit him hard. He fumbled and SA recovered. They ran out the clock. Both teams played well enough to win. I was at the PNG La Marque game that Griff mentioned above. That was a very good game. I was surprised to see PNG dominate like they did. They beat LM bad. Then there was the BC PNG game in 1996. The winner wins the district. If BC lost they stayed home. BC was in 4a back then. BC ran the "wing T" with Les Johnson the coach. BC's offensive line was huge and the backfield was great. PNG had a very good team and had Capadonna, sp, in their backfield I think. BC scored 4 very long TD's against PNG's good defense but missed two extra points. PNG scored late in the game to go ahead 27-26. They went for two and missed. That was the final score. If coach Johnson had put some of his offensive linemen to play defense I think BC would have won the game. BC's coach did not believe in any two way players. BC had to stay home. What a shame and what a game.
  14. We went to the games with another couple for years. We have two kids and so did the other couple. Both boys were in the band and the girls were both in the Strutters. We were never late to any of the games. However, I don't believe the wives ever knew what the score was or who had the ball during the whole game. They only yakked and yakked while me and the other guy tried our best to watch the game. Now that all of our kids have graduated and have families of their own I go to the games by my self or with the guy of the other couple. We are all retired so we could go to games no mater where they are played but I am the only one that likes football enough to want to do that.
  15. This debate will have to be settled on the field of course. However, on paper it looks like HF should win the game. They have a lot of their kids coming back from a very good season and Lumberton has lost a lot of its players from a very good season. If Lumberton's program is very strong then maybe they can prevail.
  16. Excellent post "Stangchain". AD's need to keep all sports in their planning and budgeting. It is only fair to the kids if the best coaches available are hired to coach the different sports. I know that football requires the most coaches so they have to hire coaches that know football as well as baseball etc...
  17. Are there any new pictures to display? Has work resumed on the press box?
  18. in 22-4A = LCM and not because they're in bad shape because the stadium is nice but because they are too small. I agree. I have seen PNG and BC play in LCM stadium. It is too small for the crowds. And it mixes the older generations with the younger generations. Not a good mix. There were people standing on the ground trying to see the game the years I have been there.
  19. I think PNG seeked and got permission from a Cherokee tribe to use the word "Indians" as their mascot. I'm not sure if they had to have permission to have their fight song "Cherokee" approved or not.
  20. I know that PNG won the state championship in 1953, 1955, 1975. Lost in 1977 and then again to Stephenville but I cannot remember the year. So that is at least 5 apparances in the state finals.
  21. That would be 1961. It’s hard to remember now in light of all these years of WOS glory, how frustratingly unsuccessful the Stark HS football program was. There were a few bright spots, but they were exceedingly rare. As for 1961, Stark had pulled off an astonishing victory over TJ. I believe it was about the fourth or fifth time the Tigers had beaten the Yellow Jackets in the approximately 70 year history of the rivalry. But that win preserved a possibility that Stark could tie for first place in district and qualify as the (one and only back in those days) team to advance to the playoffs. But they had to win the final game at PNG. And they had the lead until the final play. Later on during that pre-Beatles year there was a briefly popular sentimental song titled “We Will Have These Moments To Remember.†The Stark kids modified one of the lines to say, “The quiet walks, the noisy fun, The ball game that we almost won.†It’s hard to remember now in light of all these years of WOS glory, how desperately the Stark kids longed for some kind of athletic success. And when talking about Stark there are so many other games that might be mentioned, where things almost went their way. The memories remain, but not the emotions. Nearly half a century has passed and it’s long since time to let it go. That game was in 1961 played at PNG. My brother was a senior that year and I was in the 9 TH grade. The play was a half back pass. Charley Wallace threw to RH Wallace for the score. Charley Wallace went to the SF 49's. He was real fast but I don't remember him doing very much for them.
  22. I remember that game. There was no chance of overtime in that game if I remember correctly. TJ would have won the game on first down stats. I remember in the paper that Thompson said that a tie was like kissing your sister. TJ tried a Rizal dazzle play and fumbled. OP came back and made one more penetration to win the game if my memory serves me correctly.
  23. That is a great facility that is unsurpassed by any that I have seen. However, I do believe that the fitness facility should have been built at least 25 or 30 yards from the field.
  24. Sounds good for PNG. Good luck Josh.
