Although I suspect I know what several of the answers to this question will be, I can't speak for anyone but myself, and no, I'm not okay with it. In fact, I think the only reason Rick Perry got behind that bill was to have something on his record that appeals to Hispanic voters in the event of a presidential campaign.

But that's not really the point here, is it? You're trying to make some bogus point about Rick Perry being similar to Barack Obama in how he deals with illegal immigrants, and I suspect that you erroneously believe and would then ignorantly try to point out that the only reason we hold differing views of the two of them is either race or partisan affiliation.

Well, as usual, you're wrong. They don't hold the same views on illegal immigration and border security, and Rick Perry doesn't speak out against Barack Obama's policies regarding those issues in public just to quietly go along with them in private. Don't believe me? Rick Perry deployed 1,000 troops to the border. Barack Obama ordered ICE to turn loose any illegal immigrant they took into custody, including suspected criminals, unless they were being held on felony charges.

    I rest my case.

Big Gurl........I have come across many on welfare driving brand new luxury vehicles. When I am behind someone in tha Walmart and watch them get ribeyes and lobster on the lone star card and then whip out a roll of cash to pay for cigs and booze, I then like to follow them out and see what kind of grocery go-getter they drive. Sometimes it is a small non-luxury vehicle but many times it is way more than what you or I drive.

It is done quite a bit. I tend to think it (the extra cash) comes from one of 2 places. First, some illegal activity or trade or 2, they actually work but for cash so it is not reported and the can collect from the gov't. This double dipping, which happens quite a bit, kills us twofold.

Imagine the turnaround in cash flow if 500,000 people went from taking $1600/ month from the system and had a job where they paid $700/ month into the system. What is that, instead of $800,000,000 per month leaving.........we would replace it with $350,000,000 coming in........that is a $1.15 billion a month swing for the good. The jobs are there......they might not be the exact job a person wants but there are jobs to be had. I think the gov't makes it too easy on these folks. Also, by keeping a big group dependant on the gov't keeps them in your back pocket when the voting time comes around.

Granted, there are many who need this system in place to survive but the ones abusing should be put behind bars.

Big Girl was critical of Perry for trying to do something about the illegals and critical of Bush for doing nothing (so she thinks).

One might get the impression that no matter what a Republican does, to her, it will be wrong.

Not the same thing. President Bush put together a compromise that won bipartisan support in the upper house. The word "compromise" isn't in President Obama's dictionary; he prefers to make demands and then blame Republicans for their inability to pass in Congress.

The funny thing about it is, with the way the political landscape is in Congress right now, if President Obama actually tried a compromise along the lines of President Bush's proposal, he might just be able to get it passed and salvage his dismal legislative record.

You know, it's funny you should bring up this subject. It was actually the focal point of one of my research projects last year.

Iraq or no Iraq, Bush tried to do something about immigration reform. Look up the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, which was a bipartisan piece of legislation introduced in the Senate in 2006 at the urging of the Bush administration. Its counterpart never passed the House because of partisan bickering.

President Bush talks about that legislation specifically in his memoir, Decision Points. It was modeled in part after the successful Bracero Program implemented by Franklin Roosevelt and killed by Lyndon Johnson. Frankly, it was the best compromise ever proposed in this country on the immigration issue, and it passed the Senate with a strong margin. Had it passed the House, it likely would have quelled the immigration problem before it became a crisis.

A lot of coaches are taking shots at the SEC - and they can - but until another league can place 1/2 of its teams in the top 25 (as well as having 3 - 4 in the top 10) on a fairly regular basis they all sound like crybabies.

The topic of this thread is a poll showing that Mitt Romney would win in a landslide if the 2012 election were held again today, not which voting base is more intelligent or less informed.

Personally, I think this is evidence that a lot of moderates, independents and swing voters begrudgingly gave Obama their vote in 2012, and now wish they could go back and change it.

I believe NewTobie that this could very well have been a factor.  I talked with one of the higher ups at the Port of Beaumont yesterday and he told me that this would be very beneficial to the PetroChem industry in our area.  Although the funding has not been put in place to start the project, kudos to the President for signing the bill.  Now if he would just sign the Keystone Pipeline bill.

I don't know if Baylor has the premier football program, but I think they have the best run athletic department in the state. They're certainly nothing to ignore.

As far as football is concerned, one thing is for certain: the college football landscape in the state of Texas is a lot more equitable and competitive than it used to be. I think Charlie Strong is going to have a harder time winning and keeping recruits than just about any other coach in UT history, and Kevin Sumlin won't have an easy go of it, either. Baylor and Texas Tech both have more stroke than they've ever had before.
