2012 Sheldon C.E. King Panthers Team Preview

[size=12pt]What many had hoped to be a step back into the playoffs ended up being a step back for the C.E. King Panthers in 2011.  So, to help get the Panthers back to the playoffs for the first time since 2008, the Sheldon ISD hired former Barbers Hill head coach Don Price away from 21-3A's Hamshire-Fannett.  The cupboard is anything but bare in Price's first season here as 13 starters return from last year's squad to again strive for the playoffs.

Returning starters: 8[/b]

Senior quarterback John Portillo (67-133, 1036 yards, 9 TDs in 2011)will return for his third year as the C.E. King starting quarterback.  While the running back position has not been settled yet, Portillo does know that he will have his top 2 receivers, seniors Carlos Smith (39 catches, 678 yards, 6 TD, 2nd team al district in 2011) and A.J. Jeffery (27 catches, 380 yards, 2 TD) back in the fold.  They will all be protected by an experienced offensive line which includes center Cameron Black, as well as linemen Tyrone Nash, Phillip Flaniken, Davionne Christian and Chris Villalon.

Five Panthers return from the 2011 squad to man the C.E. King defense.  It will feature an talented and experienced front line which will include senior lineman Jamichael Franshaw (2nd team all district in 2011), end Sterling Robinson (2nd team all district in 2011) and lineman Everett Anderson.  A young linebacker corp will be the help of Smith and senior safety Jolee Norman.

CE. King begins the season by hosting 2 time defending 3A, DII, Region III champ Coldspring-Oakhurst on August 31st.  The district opener against Porter on September 14th will be followed a week later by a trip to Coach Price's old stomping grounds, Barbers Hill.  The Panthers close the regular season with a Thursday night affair as they travel to Humble on November 8th.
