Port Arthur Independent School District trustees are expected to vote Thursday on a new Memorial High School head football coach.

The board will meet in closed session for that vote, but an open meeting will follow at 7 p.m.

At that time, trustees will consider approving costs related to additions at the Memorial High School football stadium; a crisis management alert system; and a proposed sanitary sewer system near the yet-to-be built Staff Sgt. Lucian Adams Elementary school.

The meetings will be held at the Stilwell Technical Center, 4801 Ninth Ave., in Port Arthur.

Harrison to be Memorial football coach

Kenny Harrison is the next football coach at Memorial High School.

The Port Arthur ISD school board approved Harrison's promotion from assistant coach by a 7-0 vote at a board meeting Thursday night.

Harrison, 35, was chosen among 32 applicants for a job vacated by Ronnie Thompson, who resigned Dec. 18 but retained an athletic director's title.

Harrison has served as a Memorial assistant since the school opened in 2002. He is a Thomas Jefferson graduate who played wide receiver at the University of Texas.

Harrison is the third head coach in Memorial history. Dean Colbert coached the Titans for four seasons. Thompson, a TJ graduate who coached TJ to the 1980 state title game, coached the last three seasons.

Harrison served as offensive coordinator under Thompson.

Memorial went 3-6 last season. The school competes in District 21-5A with West Brook.

Memorial is one of four Southeast Texas high schools to have hired a new head coach.

When the trustees of the Port Arthur Independent School District went searching for a new head football coach for Memorial High School, they need look no further than their own backyard.

Offensive coordinator Kenny Harrison was selected to head up the football program Thursday night at the regular meeting of the PAISD board of trustees. Several football players present in the audience gave a resounding yes vote for Harrison’s hiring before the trustees could approve the appointment.

“I give honor to God because I wouldn’t be here without Him. My goal is for Port Arthur Independent School District to be the top school district academically and athletically,†Harrison said.

He thanked the board and administration for the opportunity, and said he looked forward to working with them and others.

The Thomas Jefferson High School graduate attended the University of Texas from 1992 to 1997. After UT, he returned home to Port Arthur and began his coaching career with TJ, where he spent his first year as an assistant coach of the freshman team. The following year, he coached at the junior varsity level. In 2001, he was promoted to varsity as offensive coordinator.

“I’ll put an emphasis on education, being a good citizen and building great character,†he said. “I’m looking forward to everything.â€

As far as football strategy goes, Harrison said they’ll be a spread-offense team, but use variations with two backs and one tight end. He added he’s been part of wide-open offenses and also ball-control offenses. At first, he said he’ll be evaluating players and coaches on what direction they need to head.

Johnny Brown, PAISD superintendent, said there were good candidates that came forward for the position with interest from around the nation for the job, but Brown felt Harrison was the best for the job because of his hard work with teachers, parents, coaches and students.

“We chose him for several reasons,†Brown said. “His commitment to the school district for several years of service. He’s well respected and admired by faculty, staff, principals, parents, and especially students.

“The timeliness of this is he can hit the ground running, make improvements and bring it to another level. He has a passion and knowledge of football as a player and a coach. He’s interested in the children.â€

Brown called Harrison an outstanding candidate and he’s pleased with the board’s decision.
