The DEI Rot In The Airline Industry Is Way Worse Than You Think!

In December of 2022, a Boeing 777 operated by United Airlines took off from Hawaii in heavy rain. About a minute into the flight, the aircraft plummeted towards the ocean. It came just 750 feet from hitting the water at high-speed, which almost certainly would have killed all 280 people on board. In the end, the pilots saved the aircraft by a matter of seconds.  For more than two months, no one heard about this incident. It was as if it had never happened.

From the article:  "The first thing to note is that the pilots were pretty experienced, with the captain being a lot more experienced than the first officer on this aircraft. The captain had a total of 19,600 flight hours (including 5,000 hours on the 777), while the first officer had 5,300 flight hours (including 120 hours on the 777). So around 25,000 hours of experience in the cockpit is quite a bit, though the first officer was basically brand new on the 777.  The cause of the incident was determined to be a miscommunication between the two pilots over the flap settings. The captain asked for flaps to be set to five degrees, though the first officer thought he said 15 degrees. On top of that, the NTSB blames the pilots’ failure to manage the aircraft following a miscommunication."

If I'm not mistaken United at one time said they were going to go full steam ahead towards quotas.  Now, was this first officer a quota?  Not sure at this point.  If known, how many would want a quota flying your airplane or operating on your brain?!

ANOTHER DEI/Quota situation?!  Are they hiring maintenance workers based on anything other than competence?

The article seems to blame Boeing, rather than Delta's maintenance, for issues with a 20-year old airplane. Anyway, yes, I agree that the airline industry is, and has been for the past several years, experiencing problems much more frequently than in the past. It's pretty scary.
