Uil talking about combining private schools, public, state correction schools

Recommended Posts

Just heard Uil is talking about combining private schools, state correction schools, and public in one district. The only two sports that would not effect would be football and  basket ball but all other sports would be combined together where they would have a two team play off district. What are y'alls thoughts of this passing through?

The problem with the proposal is that the legislators thinks that TAPPS is unfair to private school students. From what I have read private school coaches don't want to be a part of UIL because of rules. Charters schools already can play in UIL they just have to play in the classification that the lowest school in the school district where the charter is in.

Originally it was for all sports but outcries caused the basketball and football exception. If they are doing that why not for baseball, softball, volleyball, or soccer?

The other huge issue is small public schools. Would private schools play in the same classification as their attendance levels(Grace Prep would be 2A)? Play one level up? Follow the charter school rule? And most importantly for large city privates have a check similar to the Jesuits where a student that transfers in during high school must sit out a year regardless unless the live in the attendance zone of the nearest public school? This along with the scholarships issue for students that may not be able to attend a school paying full tuition.

This has been political but the truth is no one wants this. TAPPS works. Should the get more exposure? Possibly but an organization for privates that can offer benefits is better than trying to figure everything out above.

Just my opinion

The only thing that I wish UIL would change for the students is to allow a student living in their zoned attendance school to play a sport for the neighboring school if their zoned school does not offer that sport and can provide transportation.

Example if a student lives in and attends Evadale or Buna but wants to play soccer they should be allowed to play for Silsbee if they can provide transportation and make the team. They could still play football or basketball at their home school.

I know that the idea seems far fetched but they are still public school students and would still be eligible with UIL. They would also still have to make the team. It's unfair to the student because maybe their school doesn't have enough students or the finances and the only option is to move to a different school.
