INDEPENDENCE DAY USA

Each year on July 4, The United States celebrates INDEPENDENCE DAY, which is commonly known as THE FOURTH OF JULY!

This day is a federal holiday which commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain.

Political speeches and ceremonies along with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, baseball games, class reunions and family reunions take place all across the country celebrating our independence.

• July 4, 1777 – The First Anniversary â€“ Bristol, Rhode Island, fired thirteen gunshots in salute: once at morning and once again at evening.  Philadelphia hosted an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks.   Ships were decorated with red, white and blue bunting.
• July 4, 1778 â€“ General George Washington gave his soldiers a double ration of rum and an artillery salute.  On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin hosted a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.
• July 4, 1779 â€“ The holiday fell on a Sunday so the celebrations were held on Monday, July 5.
• July 4, 1781 â€“ The Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration.
• July 4, 1783 â€“ Moravians in Salem, North Carolina held a celebration with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter.  The work was titled “The Psalm of Joy”.
• July 4, 1791 â€“ The first recorded use of the name “Independence Day” occurred.
• July 4, 1820 â€“ The first Fourth of July celebration in Eastport Maine was held and it remains the largest in the state.
• July 4, 1870 â€“ The United States Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees.
• July 4, 1938 â€“ The United States Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday.

Along with the fireworks, there are songs associated with the Fourth of July holiday, some of which include: our National Anthem – “The Star Spangled Banner”,  â€œGod Bless America”,  â€œAmerica the Beautiful”, “My Country, Tis of Thee”, “This Land Is Your Land”, “Stars and Stripes Forever”,  â€œGod Bless the U.S.A.”, “Yankee Doodle” and “Dixie”.

* At noon, a “Salute to the Union” is fired, each Independence Day, by any capable military base.  This  is a salute of one gun for each state in the United States.  *

* In 2009, New York City hosted the largest fireworks display in the country. *

* Held since 1785, the Bristol Fourth of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island is the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States. * 

  Also please please if you have pets. Keep them inside.  more pets go missing on the 4th of July.... If you must leave your home, to go watch fireworks. Please leave your pets inside if possible. curtains closed, music or TV on. Give them their favorite toy to play with. I would hate for your pet to run away because they are scared. They can get lost, or even worse get killed by a car.... So PLEASE take care of your pets Thank you....

        Bikini Day is the anniversary of the invention of the bikini in 1946 by a Parisian fashion designer, Louis Reard. The goal of this holiday is to get to the closest beach, or find some cheap travel deals to the Philippines, Bali, Hawaii or anywhere with lots of beach, and spend the day in your bikini!

A kiss is just a kiss
appreciate the humble kiss on
International Kissing Day

 

      

International Kissing Day takes place on 6 July in the UK.   However, the day has now been adopted worldwide and is also known as National Kissing Day or Kissing Day.

When I think about it, the concept of a kiss is everywhere in society and has many meanings.  A first kiss.   A formal kiss.  A passionate kiss.  A kiss goodbye.

Kissing Day aims to make us appreciate a kiss in its own right.   No conventions, no social norms, just a kiss.  Across the globe we embrace the kiss by embracing someone else.

Competition to hold the record for the longest kiss is rife - on 6-7 July 2005 the record was set in the UK at 31 hours and 30 minutes.  Then on Valentine's Day 2009 Nikola Matovic and Kristina Reinhart from Germany set a new record of just over 32 hours.  

On 13 February 2011, a Thai couple, husband and wife team Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat locked lips and began their quest to break the longest kiss record.  After 46 hours and 24 minutes they claimed a new record for the longest kiss. Impressive! 

Nonthawat Charoenkaesornsin and Thanakorn Sitthiamthong kissed their way to the title at an event in Pattaya, Thailand on 12-14 February 2012.  But now the tables have turned and Ekkachai and Laksana Tiranarat successfully regained their crown on 12-14 February 2013 and the record for the longest kiss now stands at 58 hours, 35 minutes and 58 seconds - wow, that's some kiss!

Think of your first kiss ... was it all you expected and a treasured memory or were you too nervous to really care?

The memories that are made during your time together will stay with you forever.  During the summer season there are many wonderful places to walk and enjoy nature as you spend time talking, laughing and bonding.  The time spent together is worth more than any other gift you can give a child, no matter how old your child is.

Instilling habits of a healthy lifestyle to your children is a valuable gift.

There are many health benefits with walking and these can be incorporated into your child’s life at a young age.  Walking is also a great daily activity for the whole family to do together.

       Jul 9, 1948:

Satchel Paige makes debut with Cleveland Indians

 

   On this day in 1948, 42-year-old Leroy "Satchel" Paige pitches two innings for the Cleveland Indians in his debut with the newly--and barely--integrated American League. The game came 21 years after the great pitcher’s first Negro League appearance.

 

Leroy Page was born on July 7, 1906, in Mobile, Alabama. Page’s family changed the spelling of their name to Paige to differentiate themselves from John Page, Leroy’s absent and abusive father. "Satchel" got his nickname as a boy while working as a luggage carrier at the Mobile train station. When he was 12, his constant truancy coupled with a shoplifting incident got him sent to the Industrial School for Negro Children in Mount Meigs, Alabama. It turned out to be a lucky break, as it was there that Paige learned to pitch. After leaving the school, he turned pro.

 

From 1927 to 1948 Satchel Paige was the baseball equivalent of a hired gun: He pitched for any team in the United States or abroad that could afford him. He was the highest paid pitcher of his time, and he wowed crowds with the speed of his fastball, his trick pitches and his considerable bravado. Just for fun, Paige would sometimes call in his outfield and then strike out the side. From 1939 to 1942, the Kansas City Monarchs paid up for his services and were justly rewarded: Paige led the team to four consecutive Negro American League pennants from 1939 to 1942. In the 1942 Negro League World Series, Satchel won three games in a four-game sweep of the Homestead Grays, led by famed slugger Josh Gibson.

 

Paige’s contract was bought by Bill Veeck’s Cleveland Indians on July 7, 1948, his 42nd birthday. He made his major league debut two days later, entering in the fifth inning against the St. Louis Browns with the Indians trailing 4-1. He gave up two singles in two innings, striking one man out and inducing one batter to hit into a double play. The Indians lost the game 5-3 in spite of Paige’s contribution. That year Satchel Paige went 6-1 with a solid 2.48 ERA for the World Champion Cleveland Indians.

 

Paige was named to Major League Baseball’s All-Star Team for the American League in 1952 and 1953, when he was 46 and 47 years old respectively. In 1965, Paige pitched for the Kansas City Athletics, which made him, at 59 years, 2 months and 18 days, the oldest pitcher ever to play a game in the major leagues. Arguably the greatest pitcher of his era, Paige was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971.

It's National Pina Colada Day:

 

   In 1954, nearly 60 years ago, Ramón "Monchito" Marrero, a bartender at the Oasis Bar at the Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico, came up with a delicious, fruity cocktail that celebrated the flavors of the Caribbean.

 

 

The pina colada, made with rum, pineapple, and coconut, was an instant hit. Creamy, sweet, and tart, the cocktail quickly caught on with tourists and locals alike. The pina colada eventually became the official drink of Puerto Rico!

Unfortunately, the cocktail's popularity also became its demise, as restaurants and bars started making the frothy concoction with pre-made mixers and syrups that in no way even resembled the freshness of the original recipe.

Since it's National Pina Colada Day, this is the perfect time to taste a real pina colada -- made the way "Monchito" intended -- with fresh fruit, cream, and premium rum.

The Original Piña Colada:

Ingredients
2 oz. white rum
1 oz. coconut cream 
1 oz. heavy cream 
6 oz. fresh pineapple juice
½ cup crushed Ice

Add the rum, coconut cream, heavy cream and pineapple juice together in a blender. Add the ice and blend for about 15 seconds or until smooth. Serve in a 12-ounce glass. Garnish with a fresh pineapple wedge and a maraschino cherry.

ALL AMERICAN PET PHOTO DAY

Across the nation pet lovers are getting their cameras ready to celebrate on July 11 for All American Pet Photo Day.  This day is all about the pets, which are a part of our families.

Although you take pictures of your pets all year long, today has been annually set aside to get special pictures of your pets.  Dress them up, take them to the park, set them in a chair, put them on a fancy pillow or whatever your imagination gives you for a special photograph of your loved ones.

NATIONAL TAPIOCA PUDDING DAY

Annually celebrated across the nation, July 15 is National Tapioca Pudding Day!

Extracted from Manioc, tapioca is a starch.  Now cultivated worldwide, Manioc is a woody shrub of the Euphorbiaceae (spurge) family and is native to South America.  It is cultivated as an annual crop in tropical and subtropical regions for its edible starchy tuberous root.  When dried to a powdery or pearly extract, is called tapioca.

There are several forms that, commercially, tapioca is processed into.  These forms are: hot soluble powder, meal, pre-cooked fine/coarse flakes, rectangle sticks and “pearls”.  Pearls are the most widely used and most widely available shape having sizes ranging from around 1 mm to 8 mm in diameter.

Although used in other ways, in the United States, tapioca is usually associated with tapioca pudding.

NATIONAL WRONG WAY CORRIGAN DAY

July 17th is known as National Wrong Way Corrigan Day.

Douglas Corrigan was an Irish-American aviator who “accidentally” flew to Ireland on a flight from Long Beach, CA, to New York.  Apparently, Corrigan made a navigational error during his flight, caused by heavy cloud coverage…he somehow ended up in Ireland!  Was it a true error?  No one will never know, as Corrigan never admitted to intentionally flying to a different country.

     Beyond a doubt, Ugly Truck Day is a "guy thing". Every guy can appreciate the importance of this day. Not to be left out, a fair number of the ladies appreciate (their) ugly truck, too! Ugly trucks are loved and cherished by their owners.

Pick-Up Truck Trivia: Do you know the most popular state for pick-up trucks? If you guessed Texas, you are right!

Sure, a brand new, shiny truck with all of the gadgets and features still working, is a great thing. But, an old, ugly truck is something to cherish with pride. It has character that a new truck sorely lacks. It has a long history of dents, bangs, and scratches, each with their own tale of how it was proudly earned. Most guys can tell you exactly how and where every dent and scratch occurred, making your ugly truck a walking history book.

 

On Ugly Truck Day, go out and take a drive around with a big, broad smile on your face. You can, and should, hold an Ugly Truck contest today. But, whatever you do, don't wash or wax your truck  today!

Today is a day to celebrate while relaxing in the shade of your backyard on a nice suspended hammock as it is National Hammock Day.

A hammock, used for swinging, sleeping or resting, is a sling made of fabric, rope or netting, that is suspended between two points such as posts or trees.

Developed by natives of Central and South America for sleeping.
Were later used aboard ships by sailors for comfort and to maximize space.
Early hammocks were woven out of the bark from trees.
Today, hammocks are a symbol of summer, leisure, relaxation and simple easy living. As a way to celebrate National Hammock Day, sit back, relax and if you do not have a hammock to rest on, just tell someone, “Happy National Hammock Day!”
