He didn’t hold on to Freeman, those kids did. It’s very apparent how he feels about that community and those kids and that should’ve been taken into consideration during the hiring process. Never fear though, during the 2021 offseason, when the next coaching search is going on in Crosby, he will get another chance.

Apparently you do not know how a athletic school system works. The AD alone has the power to control who your staff is.. not the kids.. if Freeman is apart of ANY Athletic department it is because the AD allowed it. A coach not allowed by the AD would still have his yearly contract to teach but not allowed...

so if Freeman stayed and is COACHING it’s because of one man. Give him his props!!

Wow, powers that be must have realized how much pull he has in the community and on the kids and convinced him to stay. You think that is something they should have considered during the hiring process.....

The powers that be is Proeto. He is the AD and is in charge of his staff. Give him him props for holding on to a great coach like    Freeman.

First off, I couldn't care less what your suggestion is. Secondly, I don't need you to articulate to me how good programs become great. Thirdly, if you think you need a graduate degree to coach at a bigger school you're sadly mistaken. More times than not fast rising coaches aren't going to initially have graduate degrees because they don't need them for the promotions they're in line for.

Community support is something people on this board talk about for a program to be good. You ever seen FB Marshall play? They show up with more kids in the band than people in the stands and bust that ass. You need some athletes and a competent coach, see Reginald Samples Duncanville team from last year and what Claude Mathis did to Nederland with Marshall's athletes. Rio was making around $123k at Crosby, Deer Park offered around $140k. You're drastically overstating the offer he couldn't turn down, I've seen a text message from him and that's all I'll say here.

If you think the parties just started you obviously don't know anything about the program, we were doing that kind of stuff in the 90's under Coach Dickey. Those have absolutely 0 to do with school funding, that straight out of parent's pockets. How does that correlate to the current financial situation, again you seem not to know what you're talking about?

Rio had an issue because the supt. was walking up and down the sideline trying to have input on football decisions, any coach is going to have an issue with that. Beyond that he was trying to make decisions that should be specifically left to a head football coach.

UT put together a search committee and ended up hiring Charlie Strong. I don't care how unbiased your intentions are, if better coaches with better track records are excluded because of criteria put in place by a single person then you end up with a narrow pool of candidates and eventually somebody like Jerry Prieto. He had a big time OC job with numerous D1 athletes and got destroyed. Crosby's headline literally only listed his last two years of work because going any further back starts to get sketchy. He's an old guy that nobody else thought highly enough of to give a head coaching job at this point in his career, but since he has a graduate degree and is willing to take what's going to be lower tier pay for the Houston metro he got he job. There are plenty of Rio's I'm sure applied and we end up with Jeff Nations? I'll tell you this, there are a lot better things to do around this area on Friday night than fill the stands for a mediocre team. He wants community support he better win games immediately or he won't have any and start losing kid's interest. It's probably all a moot point though, Crosby can go 3-7 the next two years and the new supt. will be fine with it.

Your right. I know nothing about how the educational system works.. I’ve only been a coach for over a decade with a state championship ring and been a state finalist.

    1. I know you could care less what I think because you are a band wagon guy.

    2. Community support is a big part of any successful program. Athletes help to. You don’t have to show up to the game to show your support. I know several coaches at Marshal and they tell me that the community fully supports them. They don’t have band wagon guys talking crap on their program especially on a public forum.

    3. Your right about having a masters is not required however is a BIG HELP, every coach I know that has serious intentions of being a AD/Head football coach has one or is in the process of getting one. Almost every head coach I know has one.  An AD is a admission position. That usually requires a masters in education and passing a State Mandated Test!

    4. In my last post anything in “ “ is a direct quote from Rio to me personally. So look up and read again..  I know the man well, talk and text with, and respect the man. He has done great things for Crosby but also has some faults like all of us. I worked for him as well.

    5. I lived in Crosby of 4 years. The parties I am referring to are special kind of ...... well I just leave that issue alone.. could cause a lot of controversy.. let just say the actions are against my moral fiber.

    6. The Supt. Actions are a direct reflection of a conversation between Rio and him. No Supt wants his teams to lose!! It creates problems with disapline, moral fiber, leadership, sprit, and confidence, by players and the student body... so your analysis if him wanting his teams to lose if FALSE.

Well, act one of the train wreck that started with the old supt. resigning and ending with Crosby missing the playoff for the first time in a decade and a half is finally over. Not really excited about the new coaching hire and not sure Crosby will even be a .500 team next year. They'll have the talent to win every game on the roster like they did last year if healthy but other than someone new in charge none of the circumstances surrounding the program have improved. The new supt. changed the hiring rules to exclude some candidates the community wanted and install a puppet. No up and coming coach from outside the community would take this job with the financial situation as it is and his inability to properly staff the program.

I don't think we're scrapping the barrel for who we can find to take the job but I don't think hiring Coach Prieto was far from it. He averaged 44 points a game against mostly trash in an area where even though the teams in our district aren't very strong would still manage to do the same. He benefited from working at a start-up school who pulled enrollment from others in the district weakening them much like Shadow Creek did to Manvel, when he was at Cy-Springs it was clear he was in over his head and had his offenses mauled weekly. He resurrected his viability against a bunch of kids named Soto, Gonzalez and Hernandez and the new supt. fell for it. Don't be surprised if Crosby goes back to the days that if the team has a pool party at your house then your kids gets to start, deserving or not.

Crosby's only real hope for the foreseeable future is that the area is rapidly growing and they have some special kids in the lower grades about to come through the program. Lot less enthusiasm about the program from the community in general but the kids still seem to be invested which is encouraging. Still have solid transfers coming in from the surrounding area which is another positive. With the right coach I still think Crosby could play with and beat elite teams like Manvel but I don't see how we attain one of those any time soon?

From an X's and O's standpoint expect Crosby's new offense to look like what Dayton ran under Hancock and what New Caney is currently running under Pennington so at least there shouldn't be much of a transition for the offensive kids, no clue on the defense.

From a community pride standpoint I would really like to give the new staff a chance, from the standpoint of giving my other sons their best opportunity, moving 15 mins down the road to North Shore seems awful enticing now.

The man has not even steeped on Campus and made one executive decision yet and your down talking the man and the program he is going to install... you want to know how good programs become great.. with community support...

If you are mad at the Supt. then you need to reevaluate. He was not the one that put Crosby in a financial crisis.. check your board members that YOU elected .(nothing can be passed without them) and your previous Supt. The backyard swimming parties are the reason why Crosby is in the situation they are in now!!!(Those that know the real deal that is going down in Crosby know what I'm talking about) The new Supt. was hired to correct the problems that were already in effect so the STATE DID NOT TAKE OVER... do you know how bad that has to be??...(SEE NORTH FOREST).. yea, your on that level financially.

If you are blaming the Supt. for " changed the hiring rules to exclude some candidates the community wanted" then you are blaming the wrong guy.  Any coach who is serious about being a head football coach/AD, especially at the 5A or 6A level, needs to have his masters. So blame those coaches for not taking the proper steps to help success in the hiring process....

Another reason for ANY assistants not getting the job has to do with the reactions of Coach Rio to the situation.. the Supt., when faced with trying to correct the problems, hired a OUTSIDE COMPANY to help so there was no bias when having to cut positions. The new Supt. went to Rio like a man to tell him about the layoffs and RIo went off on him instead of being understanding and then letting him know that he would be looking for other positions.... the guy is just doing his job. Because of RIo's  actions,  I'm sure he would not trust or consider any of his staff for the position because how loyal they are to him...(One of the main reasons why the DC & OC gets fired when a new head coach come in).

And by the way, when Rio came in and brought his staff, he told his guys that Crosby was just a stepping stone and he would only be here for 3 years. the talent and SUPPORT changed his mind. He was offered another job at a really nice 6A, however "Crosby made me an offer that I could not turn down"

My suggestion during this time is to be understanding and give as much support you can and give Coach Prieto a chance. Crosby will continue to have success as long as the community supports it.

I saw a lot of talk on facebook about the OC wanting it and the kids wanting him, community too, not sure if he has an interview or not. Think he is a Crosby native too.

If the applicant does not have a masters then they were kicked off the website and could not apply. The current OC could not apply.

Thanks. These guys remember the line of people supporting Flannigan but do not remember the wave of folks who were dying to get him out. No one was dying to get Rio out.

a wave to get him out???... where were they at the board meetings?? Nope!! The small minority that wanted him out could not understand why he could not get kids scholarships with GPA of 1.9 or lower, could not pass TAKS, had multiple wright ups in school, posting drug use on social media and having criminal records... yea colleges are dying to get those kids... SMH!!

by the way... last 4 years of each program playoff appearances:

    Rio -5

    Flannigan -7

Flannigan had to rebuild Crosby back to a winning tradition with less talent. When Rio started his program he inherited a program that had 7 playoff appearances in 4 years,  a D1 QB, D1 RB going to Rice(Walters twins), a WR going to UTAH(Singleton), a Tackle going to UH(Murphy), a center going to Lamar(Bridgeman), not to mention how many signed to next level? was it like 13 on that team. Some might say he under achieved with this talent and not getting past 2nd round. Some would also say he over achieved the following year with a young team going to the simi-final round.

Again for the last time, Rio has done a great job at Crosby and will be missed. He is a good man who puts his faith in God and lives by the Book. I can't say enough great things about him. But to say it is all down hill, this job is a death trap to any coach coming in, and Rio is like Urban Meyer and no one could replace him is false.

Yeah, but at that time, Crosby was full of potential and lacking in expectation. Rio led the charge on the facilities upgrade, the culture change, and the many many kids who have gone on to play at the next level. Now, you are looking for someone to come in and keep that culture and expectation high and no one will be able to deliver like Rio did. Add that to the financial difficulties which will make this a mediocre paying gig........it's going to be bad.

When Rio goes, so does code red. All of that tradition goes out the door with him.

Let me clue you in on some of your information. The upgrade of facilities had already started. The funding for the score board was already in the works with Flanigan. There was always a charge to upgrade facilities! There was a vote on a bond to upgrade facilities which was shot down by the community. So administration (Dr. Moore) proposed a new school with renovations in the bond. THE COMMUNITY PASSED IT; barley in fact.

Now every coach wants to change the culture to his own staple; hence Code Red, (which is Code Blue at Sulphur Springs).  All coaches work on kids to buy into their program. However, in this case Rio did not take over a dying program and turn it around.  It was already successful; so easier buy in for the kids.

And your right. When Rio goes so does code red. Just like every school that is losing their AD; they lose what the program was pushing. Change is coming but it does not necessarily mean that it is bad.  Crosby had a winning tradition before he got there. Understand before Rio got the job, there was a line of community members at the board meeting trying to keep Flanigan. So again, change is not always bad. It is sad to see how the ethics of a few can change a school atmosphere however this is a good job for someone. Crosby is a great community that shows it support for their own. They have athletes that love to buy in.

I wish Coach Rio nothing but the best and hopefully he can make an impact at Chapel Hill.

If you can’t see his value, then you’re part of the problem

Did not say he did not have value. He has done great things there. I know him very well and respect his decisions. But to say he is the ONLY reason why they have had success is false. They were successful before he got there. Its funny that the exact things were said when they let go of Kevin Flanigan.

You underestimate the value of Rio. He was the glue. It starts going downhill today, the athletes start moving to Dayton or Huffman, and Crosby settles in as a 5 or 6 win a year type of team.

I love Rio. however I think you overestimate his value. Crosby has been successful since 2006! they made the playoffs in 2006-17. Last year was the first time they missed in a decade with 2 Area appearances(2010, 2011) and 1 Regional Final (2009) under Flanigan. They were successful before he got there. One year Rio did take a team to the Simi-Final. Rio is a great man and has made MANY improvement to the program however I believe Crosby will be fine. The community has some of the best support I have ever seen. Who ever takes this job does have to work within the guidelines of new Administration however it is a great job for someone!

  10. BREAKING NEWS: Nederland ISD in financial crisis. The state has demanded financial statements for the 2017-2018 school year. Apparently Neederland ISD was way over budget and the state will step in unless budget is balanced.  When examined by the state a alarming high bill stood out; a water bill for Bulldog Stadium for the week of Mid County Madness. When questioned about the bill Neederland ISD replied, "I Daano. We no do that!"  Neederland ISD expects the budget to be balanced by next year due to Mid County Madness being played at the Reservation, however will be prepared for the expenditure of excess water next year.

What integrity!!! A win will make cheating all better. SMH

Do you really think BH, Crosby and other schools do not break the rules?? I have personally seen BH coaches coaching their kids in 7 on 7 after school and at half of tournaments... guess what, that is against UIL rules.... I have even seen a kid paid by the School board member cash at a Peso's. Handed the kid $200 and said "my wife is not comfortable with your family and you coming by the house to eat. Here.... go buy them something nice". Heck one Coach lost his job because of recruiting practices. So don't give the integrity speech and cheater speech when I don't know a school that totally obeys all UIL laws (many of which are stupid anyways).

Man don’t even start...I was against that $&@# scoreboard from the start. We had a scoreboard that worked just fine but oh no “we have to keep up with the Jones”. I’m so disgusted with all this mess I sure hope some prison time is coming for the responsible. I hate this for our community the teachers & staff let go are now victims. I feel bad for our kids too but hey your right we got a freaking big scoreboard & some sweet ball fields.

I know nothing about SF except the obvious so I would just like a win. Good luck to both teams.

The score board cost the district absolutely nothing. There is a group of investors that are paying the note for advertisement for 10 years. Once it is paid off by investors it will be given to the school to sell advertisements. It is nothing but a profit for Crosby.

We must not be on the same page on what CORE classes are. CORE is Math, English, Science, and History. I know very few head baseball coaches that teach Math, Science, or English. Same for basketball coaches. History on the other hand, is a coaches best friend.

I kinda got the inside tract on this subject. I know what CORE is. You must be thinking old school. I know a lot of head coaches that teach core classes. Walton may teach PE at West Brook, but that is at a 6A school and he has been there for over a decade. Most head coaches at other school teach CORE subjects. I'm one of them.

You are right about history being a coaches best friend. Many coaches teach it. when they leave it is usually the subject that opens up... which is why many head coaches still teach CORE classes.

  14. 1 hour ago, Tigers2010 said:

My point was, someone made the comment of their Head Baseball coach teaching a CORE subject. I just said that is rare because most OCs/DCs and Head Coaches do not teach a CORE (Math, Science, English, Social Studies) class. History maybe, but that is on the verge of non-Core class anyway. It is extremely rare for OC/DC, Head Coach to teach Math, Science, or English.

I would agree with you about OC/DC usually not teaching CORE subjects(they have so much on their plate. Also we live in Texas where football is king); however most head coaches of other sports usually do teach core. especially at most schools from 4A down

  15. 19 hours ago, Tigers2010 said:

Makes sense. I would find it difficult to believe that the Head Baseball Coach teaches a CORE subject though. I am with you. Just curious. If I had a daughter on that team i'd be pissed. Shows how little they care about girls basketball.

The head baseball coach does teach a CORE subject and has been there since 2009

  16. The HJ job is tough for anyone to take.  It does not pay very well, LOW BUDGET, the district will not improve facilities(you can see that by not having baseball lights.. still the laughing stock of the state), Jr. high in cubicles(FEMA will not give them any money until they raise the old high school up like 2 ft.. which will not happen), the people in the district will not pass a bond(they feel the money from last bond was squandered, things that were supposed to be done were not), new AD will not be able to run a 4A athletic program correctly without interference from other head coaching sports (this will not change, look at Admin., any other school in the state of Texas if the head of other sports have any problems with the way the AD is running things... they would be gone.. that is not going to happen at HJ.

Until these things are fixed.. HJ will be nothing but a stepping stone and will get only coaches that will use it that way.

  17. Good list. From looking at the list, knowing the community very well and what I think Kirbyville  needs...3 guys I know stand out and would make an immeadete and long term impact are (alpha order and last two stops)...

    Zach Bass(PNG OL, OC LaPorte)

    Brandon Craus(AD Groveton, OC Dayton)

Grover Smith (Westbrook OL, OC Crosby)

All 3 of these guys are very knowledgeable, have proven success, know the area, have a small town mentallity( which I think is very important for Kirbyville’s success)  and are coaches the kids would respond to.

  18. 12 minutes ago, bullets13 said:

I would assume videoing in an area where people of any age, but especially minors, are getting undressed would be illegal for obvious reasons.  Just like a department store can't put video cameras in their dressing rooms to stop shoplifters

True.. However here is what I heard..

The camera was not turned on until all players were done dressing and at practice.. And was turned off when they returned.. So it was only on when nobody was supposed to be in the locker room.. So no intent to video "naked minors"... Just a thief!!

A report was filed about numerous theifts in their field house and BISD did not respond accordingly. They hire BPD to supply security however, as you have seen lately with the parking lot insadent, security is a problem. In fact there has been several reports of people coming on campus and threatening students. Complaints were made about BPD.

Flanigan is a great man. Filed with integrity. He was only looking out for the interests of his players. Sad that it has come to this..

  19. Yeah, King beat Crosby in King. King also lost to Kingwood Park at Turner, Crosby beat KP at Turner. I don't have any doubt if they played the very next week at a neutral site Crosby wins. Why couldn't KP beat Crosby at home like they did King?

Ita about matchups, King was soft on defense and if you kept Tray Williams off the edge their offense became a lot less effective. Ridge Point didn't have a potent offense and would've had a very hard time breaking 20 on Crosby's defense, I think Crosby's style of offense was a bad matchup for RP.

All we can do is play who we can play. We have 1500 kids and are the 7th largest school in a 9 team district. It is what it is, all we can do is line it up and see.

if C.E. Kings Defense was so "Soft".. how did your explosive offense only score 21 on them???

Im not taking anything from your season.. what a great year and a GREAT GROUP OF SR...VERY COMPETITIVE GROUP..

you are right though.. it is about match ups and you can only play who you play... however you cant say you would have been as successful if you went D-I...the logic does not add up to me.. by the way Ridge Point lost the next game..

  20. I love how you throw Crosby with those schools. Haven't been past the second round since 09 with the exception of last year.... Also I don't see your logic when the team that beat you last year loses in the second round... And yall go to the 5th round in D-II... Again rankings or polls don't mean squat!!

  21. Part of what you're saying is true but the other part is really a variable.  The example you gave is perfect. The higher the enrollment, the more talent there is and usually a better team. That part is true.

However, in '12 and '13 D2 was the tougher route in 5A. If you look at the current AP poll Cedar Park, Crosby, Ennis, Aledo and Mansfield are all D2 teams the majority of the time.

5A is so evenly matched though, especially in region 3, that that type of logic doesn't really apply as much as it does to other classes.

I love how you throw Crosby with those schools. Haven't been past the second round since 09 with the exception of last year.... Also I don't see your logic when the team that beat you last year loses in the second round... And yall go to the 5th round in D-II... Again rankings or polls don't mean squat!!  in '12 and '13 the district champs summer creek rolled Crosby.. They did not make it out of the second round.. I would not call that easier.

  22. So why do you think D1 is tougher most years?

numbers.. yea you might get 1 or 2 teams in D-II that are really good but overall there are more competitive teams in D-I.. yall should know that.. Ex. 2009.. Crosby loses in 3rd round in D-I to Dawson (State runner up).. Dayton goes to 4th in D-II. .
