You know Gasilla, I can't put my finger on why we are not playing better.  Is it all because of the 50 defense, or is it the attitudes of the fans and the players are feeling their reactions. One thing I want coach H. to do better beside having the team ready to win is to...  get into the shoes of the refs, make them feel his raft if he feels that they made a bad call against his team LOL.

Bug, I think it's many things that begin with changing from the 50. I think the present coach is a great person, but, I think it's a poor decision to come in and the first thing you do is change the first thing you said you wouldn't change. That also happens to be the foundation the program was built on. You know, it's kind of one of those deals, if your going to come in and change the foundation of the program, you sure as heck better be successful at it.

I agree with DJ in that we don't have the personnel to run the 40. There's a reason we ran the 50 all these years. The lineman you need at the 3 techniques we don't have every year. The 50 plays into what we have in abundance, quickness.

That, and we don't tackle like Mustangs anymore and I can only wonder if we still hit and tackle in practice (we may, that's just speculation).

I've seen the people on FB blaming it on a young team and an overall lack of talent from years past. I coached these kids and the 10 classes before them. This class has as much talent, experience and ability as the last 2 or 3.

All in all, I hope they get this thing rolling. But, when you make changes to something that didn't need changes, you put yourself on a much shorter leash than you would had you truly attempted to "continue the tradition".

You are ride or die always have been. There are things that I know about what went on at the game that were un-called for. I do not mind calling people out on the acts. This is a young team with a young head coach. we should give it time. (JMO). Shaw is in a boot and will not play on Friday. He has a high ankle sprain. Thanks for giving me your insight about our home town. I hate hearing people form other areas of Orange taking digs at my neighborhoods where I grew up yet they want to merge with WOS without having nothing to do with the success that the players we know(n) built.. Trust and believe I have lots of family in Orange and I keep in touch.

I respect your views and agree that some things are getting out of hand. But, this is NOT a young team. We return 8 on both sides of the ball and the senior group never lost from 7th through JV.

Week 2 game was vs. Huffman

I also assumed we always had a scouting crew before to get a look at upcoming opponents.

An opportunity to catch a district game. Wonder how far out they're looking at Jasper, or BC for that matter. Or was the focus only on the overall favorite to win the district? Which is also his Alma mater that he needs to prove something to. Revenge for not getting that job when he applied.

I should probably stop before this gets carried away any farther. To be continued...

With the rise of Hudl, scouting isn't done like it used to be. Most scouting now is done via Hudl in lieu of the cost of sending out scout teams all over the place.

What I see as a big problem now - in the past there were few better options had things went wrong.  Now you have a charismatic Coach at LCM who appears to be building a juggernaut.  Close enough to draw talent from WOS.  As pointed out, currently it’s only two losses to two very good teams, but if it continues, it may well be the end of a dynasty.  Good luck to the Mustangs going forward.

That hasn't happened with the current varsity group, but, depending on where the season ends up, will be a real problem in the future.

You guys gotta stop comparing Coach Hickman to Coach T or Hooks. Give him time and he will have WOS back right. Im pull against him this weekend but I will tell you, he is a solid coach. Is talent down this year in WOS?

We have 8 back on each side of the ball from a regional finalist. The senior class didn't lose from 7th thru JV. Talent isn't the issue.

The success is undeniable. Less than 2 scores per game for our history and more shut outs than losses, but that defensive scheme had to go? Are we trying to continue the tradition or destroy it?

My reasoning for asking that question is I am sure they were in the top 10 percent or 5 percent in the State over the last 30 years or so in points and yards allowed. So why would you change something or somebody i.e. Coach Pierce if they are getting the job done at the highest level in the State?

I dont think that there's much doubt that they'd probably be #1 in all classes defensively if that was a stat someone kept. Not saying they were the best in the state every year but they were certainly close to the top in most years. There's always a team each year that had so much talent that they were loaded defensively, but we were good every year and great many.

Let me help u with that.ive been talking to a few players today.and they gonna go with this 4/2/5.DC is determined to teach them his scheme.i truly believe it will only look like were getting better when we're playing weaker teams.but as soon as they play a well coached team that's it.lol, he even said they weren't even lining up right all nite.tough times moving forward.

That's almost comical coming from a team known for being swiss cheese on defense... again, smarter than a legend...

I'm not trying to diminish one over another and I didn't play, so I am going by what my friends who did had to say. I was there 85-89 when the dynasty started and back then it was understood that although Dan was the head coach, that was Coach T's team. "Defense wins championships." Coach T became DC in 1981. He was also the strength and conditioning coach. Also importantly, he was the disciplinarian. WO-S' reputation is defense and conditioning. Discipline.

From 1985 to now WO-S has missed the playoffs just 5 times. '92 when we forfeited some district games, '99, then 2001-2003.

Coach T was gone to Palestine and Huntsville 2001-2003.

It could be a wild coincidence. The district was tough. Going 8-2 and missing the playoffs is tough. But, it could also be the proof in the pudding. I bleed blue and silver. I WANT to be wrong. I just don't think I am.

People were fighting for Toby because they believed he was the best chance to continue a legacy because he spent so much of his life a part of it. Every little change we hear about from outsiders coming in sounds like the death of what has worked for so long. It just sounds like it is really finally over.

    Right, smack on the money.

"The records irrelevant"? The record is the "only thing that is relevant". I have never seen "yards between tackles" on a coach's record. If WOS makes a deep playoff run, there will be no memory of the "yards between the tackles" in week 2 and 3.

It's irrelevent after 3 games... ive never seen a 3 game title run. Have you?

The defense, as it stands, will not support a long playoff run. That's why we're asking question... and hoping changes are made.

This is a message board, ya know. It's kind of what you do here.

No idea "why change it". Seems like they have a decent record. PNG is also a decent team capable of beating a smaller school. Are you saying WOS coaches are less knowledgeable than the fanbase? Novices? Dont know defenses?

Perhaps they know the exact depth and ability of particular positions? Do they have more LBs? Less DLs? or vice versa? They see the kids practice. I wouldnt be surprised if the "yards between the tackles" changed throughout the year.

    The records irrelevent.

I'm not saying anything about what the coaches know.

Do you think all coaches are outstanding with infinite knowledge? If so, why are some great and others not? Why do some run a certain style of defense and others a different style? Obviously, there can be problems with what coaches know. Do you think a coach with no experience knows more than a coach with 50 years of experience? Heck, since we're asking questions, what about a coach with no experience compared to a coach with 50 years and headed to the Hall Of Fame?

In the case of WOS, I have no idea why they changed from what's been successful for 45 years. It may have nothing to do with knowledge. It could be pride. Maybe he wants it to be HIS. Maybe he doesn't want to be under the shadow of the past. Is that the right reason to change? Is that fair to the kids?

    Lots of questions.

Got it. We both "question what we question". Just trying to figure out if the players are still lining up on DL and LB. What part of it is different that they cannot figure it out?

Also, what is their record? Has WOS ever lost a game to a larger school in the past? Still ended up good?

I dont know if there not figuring it out or it just doesn't fit. Why change it?  That's the question.

Sure we lost to bigger schools. We're 20-8 all time against PNG and they've been bigger than us in most of those. Are you saying that's why our defense is bad? Because PNG is bigger?

The last 2 games, we've given up 6-7 yards a carry between the tackles. That's never happened.

Just in case the new coach "doesnt know anything about defense" and "just started coaching this year", where exactly do you believe the kids are "lining up that they do not know how to play"? Did something change for MLBs? Did filling the gaps change? OLBs? Did something change for the DTs? Are they still playing 5, 4i? 0,1,2 or 3? Do they not know how to play the new positions? DBs still covering WRs? Did they forget how to cover WRs? Or did the new coach tell them not to cover WRs?

What "system" is he running that is "not proven"? All defenses are successful when the players execute.

Ah, I was waiting for that. Its the players fault, right. Eight of which played pretty well in the 50 last year. Nice rant BTW.

I dont have a problem with the new head man. I just have to question the decision to change something that worked right out the gate. I'm a grown man, I will question what I question.

Wow. You guys are down on the Stangs early this year. It's hard to lose a legendary coach. The new coach doesn't do it the way it's been done forever.  Give him some time to put his stamp on the program.  Sometimes change is hard.......but it's better.

I could agree with this if it were the offense being "tinkered" with. The defense didn't need his "stamp". Its been good for 45 years.

Besides, I'm not sure what his "stamp" would be. He's never been a HC. He previously was at WOS so I'm not sure how proven his system is or how in the world it would be different from the one he was coaching under before he got that job.
