  1. The fact that they can loose to a bunch of 4A teams (during their worst season the past 5 years) 2 of them being very close losses then still go undefeated in district and exit the playoffs in the 3rd round says a lot about their program. 4A schools are supposed to beat 3A schools. But most times that isn’t the case when it comes to Newton.

And everybody knows that Mayweather's record is a joke because he never faced any decent competition in their prime.

Mayweather faced everyone. He can’t controll the timing of the fights or catch every fighter in their prime because he can’t face em all at once. He stayed in his prime throughout his career the same way Newton has. They’re verry good in whatever classification they’re in each year. Some years they are able to beat some of the best teams at the next level up. On their worst years they’re still able to beat average teams at the next level up. But “everybody knows” a haters gonna hate lol

Lol.... They have their hands full with schools like us and Orangefield on their down years.

I think you are the one that isn't understanding what I'm saying...  Everybody knows who Mike Tyson was.  At the same time that he was the heavyweight world champion, there was an undisputed 115 lb. champion walking around, too-but nobody could name him, then or now.

Newton's accomplishments are fantastic and worthy of tons of respect.  But 3A championships are kinda like WNBA championships... only the unhinged would try to claim that a NBA championship to a WNBA championship are equal.  That's the whole point of this conversation... whose a better powerhouse? A school with 5 small school championships or 4 bigger school championships.  Oh... an one of them has the highest winning percentage in TXHSFB.

Floyd Mayweather was the Welterweight champ not too long ago. Does anybody know who the heavyweight champ was during that time? And there were plenty heavyweights who probably would have KOed him but they didn’t get the same recognition because their greatness didn’t matchup pound for pound.

I’m sure that they do... if not, they should.

I agree that State Championships are a super accomplishment no matter the level.

But you can’t honestly say that a 3A State championship means the same thing as a 6A Championship.

Everything from the quality of facilities to the number of fans and even the freaking halftime shows are absolutely not worth comparing. The level of play is on completely different planets, the athletes available are so much better, coaching is better, and the quality of competition that must be beaten to earn a championship is undeniably stacked in favor of the larger schools.

I’ll spell it out like this. Newton is a great small school that does a good job of playing at the level of good larger teams during Newton’s good years. On Newton’s bad years they’re a lot more beatable by average bigger programs. That’s not a knock on Newton.  The problem is that everybody knows that Newton is gonna roll straight over their district opponents and deep into the playoffs without ever facing the kind of talent that exists in 4A and 5A districts. It absolutely knocks some of the shine off of those trophies.  That’s not Newton’s fault.... that’s just how it is.  There were some featherweight fights on a couple of weeks ago, but we were all watching Fury-Wilder.

Go to the dirt track on a Saturday night. They run the bombers first and the hottest, fastest cars run at the end of the night.  True, the guy in that old beat-up Monte Carlo might have won his class, but the guy in the World of Outlaws winged sprint car is the big winner that night.

I don’t think you realize the facts you stated are actually what makes Newton a powerhouse. No other school only enrolling 3 or 400 students a year is producing half the athletes Newton is. And Newton could probably still beat BC on a bad year. And probably win some of the 4A districts on a bad year

Yates played those games without the Big Man so the transfer portal/recruits did not factor in.  Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles could see that Yates were going to loss those games. But at least Yates took on the challenge to complete and didn’t let those games affect their season.  Those elite teams are not going away any time soon so why not take on the challenge and play them. I hear all of the criticism about those teams but don’t see too many teams on this thread taking on the challenge to play them. It’s sad these good X’s and O’s Coaches are not willing to challenge their teams ability to play above their level in a preseason game. I understand your team would loss similar to the way Yates lost, but give them the opportunity to complete against those teams.

I’m pretty sure the Yates coach scheduled those games because he was confident in his teams ability to play somewhere close to that level. Coaches don’t normally schedule teams they don’t think they can compete with. And those elite teams don’t normally want to play anyone who’s not going to challenge them. Either way I don’t care who teams chose to play in preseason. I do care who teams are forced to have to compete with during district and the playoffs.

Yates Nation is fine with losing those games (4 games) against nationally ranked teams. Yes Yates was clearly overmatched and could not match their skill level. The talent level on those teams were overwhelming but fun to watch.  I applaud Coach Wise for taking on the challenge and allowing his team the opportunity to play against superior teams. Coach Wise would prefer to play those teams and get an old fashion whipping then play anyone in 4A region 3 during the preseason.

If they’re going to continue popping up with multiple 6’8 senior “move ins” each year they should probably compete against those schools all season. Preseason, district, and post season.

I can agree with that to a certain point however no one knows their players like a coach. Nothing will get you beat quicker than a bunch of bad 3 point shooters. I don’t think the coach was the issue at WOS. There has been some good ones there over the last few years. It just doesn’t look like it get the emphasis that is necessary to win from the outside looking in.

Not saying WOS problem was the coach because I didn’t see them play this year although I do know they normally have good athletes. Yea bad shots can take you out of a game but lack of confidence and being too stiff will take you out quicker. You don’t fix bad shot selection by threatening to yank players in my opinion.

I was talking to a WOS parent last season and he said Coach would not let the boys shoot a 3pt shot unless it was in the corner, if they did shoot a 3pt shot from anywhere else he would immediately sub that player out of game.

I personally don’t think strict limitations on players is a good style of coaching. Limitations are sometimes needed but too many limitations is a good way to have a talented team underachieve. They will never be able to perform freely if they’re worried about being yanked. Gotta let the dogs loose and not try n tame them

I listened at the Kountze vs Woodville game the other night and it sounded like the Freshman from Woodville put that club on his back. I don’t even know his name but was wondering who has seen him play and what the future holds for this young man.

He can be really good if he’s developed properly. Got a few in junior high that might be pretty good also

shows u haven't been keeping up with Coldspring

Both are decent on both ends of the floor. Coldspring Is one of the best on offense. Crockett is one of the best on defense. I believe in the old concept “defense wins championships” which is why I’m going with Crockett

Region 3-5a will be tough —-Nederland Hightower,Crosby ,Katy Paetow, Fulshear Richmond Foster, Manvel ,Texas City

Those are good teams but neither are top 25 in state except maybe Crosby to my knowledge. United is top 10 in 6A this year. The biggest challenge to United in 5A region 3 would probably be PA Memorial depending on what they got coming back. If they make it to state they may have to deal with Lancaster.

Im thinking top-3. They should be rolling into the playoffs next season undefeated in district.

Seems like they should still be really strong with those 3. Mr buddy’s probably correct. And with their coach I’d probably add a State Championship to his statement. Never know though. I don’t know what type of teams other 5A schools will be bringing back

We were discussing varsity players and the fact that he didn't play varsity proves Coach Rideaux and HF is following the rules. Also last time I checked, you don't play 1 on 5 in basketball. So apparently there are several players on that JV team that has some talent.

Doesn’t prove he’s following rules at all lol.  Probably more so proves he’s willing to break the rules if he’s able. I do believe he intended on that kid playing varsity this year. UIL was just able to enforce the rule in that instance. Knowing that he’s probably willing to break the rules how would anyone know he didn’t find loop holes to get the other 2 kids approved.

Their JV played them and won that tournament, not the varsity. My point was their pipeline is pretty strong right now.

I doubt the “pipeline” is that strong except the recruit who wasn’t eligible for varsity probably because he hadn’t previously been staying in the district like your claiming all these transfers have
