  1. When We played WOS our QB hadn’t played that position since jr high. We had to transition our offense when our expected QB transferred to Refugio that’s why we were 80% run which is not our usual offense. Now we are about 60-40 run but some of the runs are from the wildcat using different players. We can throw it but haven’t had to do it much since our running game has been pretty damn good but like I said we CAN throw it whenever we want. Our defense is smaller on the line but we make up for it with our speed and quickness. The linebackers are a tuff bunch and will lay the smack down on rb’s. Our cb’s are fast since we play kids both ways we keep our best athletes on the field. We have 3 kids committed to the next level with 2 committed to div1 and one to div.2 I’m sure y’all have a few too so this game should get interesting

Do y'all still sing the song about the Gay Caballero?

    You know....

    "He's the Gay Caballero,

He comes from out there Cuero,

He can't wait to get to San Franscisco....

    Just to swing... his...rope."

Because honestly, that's all I know about Cuero.

Why do you need us when you do it with such enthusiasm.

    I thought "gobblers" sounded shady.

Yes we’ve heard it before but.... it makes it all the more funnier when a ‘quero’ Whips your a$$

Earlier in the year I said the exact same thing and was told Cuero was without 4-5 starters including Whittington and the starting QB

Cuero was without 5 starters when they lost to Yoakum and still almost came back and beat them. I’m sure y’all have watched film and see that it’s not only jwhitt who missed the first 5 games of the season but the offense is spread around with 2 1200 yard rushers with both over 25 tds and several receivers that are used. The QB is at 2k yards but you have to realize that these stats come from the starters only playing  3 quarters sometimes less because of blowouts. It will be interesting because the defense is fast and quick and eats up the run. The 23 points Navarro scores were on our subs. They had maybe 5-6 first downs on our stayrters.

Even though it was week one.. Cuero barely beat Bay City. I was at the Sweeny Vs Bellville game. Sweeny has a couple of bruiser RB’s that can move. . But they definitely aren’t world beaters by any means.

The first 4 games we were pretty much the walking wounded. We were without our starting rb,wr,safety,cb,lb and a couple linemen. One thing it did help with is depth a lot of kids that normally wouldn’t of played much were starting and their backups also got some playing time. I do hope both WOS and Cuero play again in the semis but with a different outcome of course. Good luck in rnd 1 to you guys

  6. Bring that 6’4 monster down and he better be able to s ramble or he will be meeting up with our returning all state linebacker all night. IMO We match up well against the spread with what I believe is the best defensive backfield in 4a. The spread is better for us than What Nelms used to run at Wimberly so it should be interesting. We dominated Navarro and had them 31-0 before they could blink and Wimberly had troubles with them and they are the only team that both teams have played so take it as you will.

  7. Congrats WOS now go get that State Championship . We had no answer to your passing game and speed on the outside and it killed us. The Martinez kid is a Senior and this was his first year playing QB and he did a heck of a job once he got acclimated to the position. That QB of yours just had to throw it a far as he could the receivers did the rest and our Freshman Cornerbacks could only watch but it was a learning experience for sure. Our Offense is usually balanced like yours but this year our QB in waiting transferred during the summer and put us in a bind but Elix stepped in a ran the offense that was given to him. Good luck against Celina I'll be pulling for the Mustangs.

  8. Letter from David Cusack, the quarterback of the 1970 Cuero football team that advanced to the school's first state final, to this year's Gobblers

Dear Coach Reeve's, Coaching staff and Gobbler team members,

My name is David Cusack, I was the quarterback and co-captain of the 1970 gobbler football team. That was the first Cuero high school football team to ever reach the state final playoffs against astronomical odds in most everyones eyes!. Before the season began most people felt if we won one and two games we would be lucky. I on the other hand was determined to lead my team to the state championship. We as a team realized that if you line up against guys that are bigger, faster, tougher, and stronger than we were, we would have to go out on that field and get in there and play our hearts out as a united team or we were gonna wimp out and shrink to the challenge in front of us. How many of you all realize that team morale is to these physical attibutes what I call 4 to 1. You see your attitude is 4 times more important then these physical attributes, if you are all united in one heart, one mind!

Stay the course fellow gobblers, finish what you have started. Know deep in your hearts you can accomplish a state championship. We the former Gobblers want to inspire you all to show up and exemplify once again why the Cuero Gobblers are true legends of Texas high school football!

I can promise you this, what you will cherish the most as you get older is the profound bonding and collective friendship you have developed with your coaches and teammates, when most people had written you off as losers early on in the season. That is something so so special that no one will ever be able to take away from you. For you will carry it with you for the rest of your lives.

Even to this day at 62 years of age, I still celebrate, honor and appreciate my teammates and coaches, that inspired me to not only believe in miracles, but to expect them! We as a team had that attitude united in one heart one mind, with one goal in our focus to go to the state championship. We won a 3 way coin flip to even get to play for the district championship as we were tied with 2 other teams. We were the laughing stock of most everybody who wrote us off as flukes as we were 30 to 40 point underdogs in all of our post district games. We were playing undefeated teams who had won most of their games by 40 points!! We all realized under the guidance of Coach Gilbreth and his staff that a real man gets over his self centered ego and serves the higher good for the team. United in this understanding you will be invincible, yet divided you will surely fail! A man of real integrity keeps his promises to himself, his coaches, his family and most importantly to his teammates. So I encourage you all to go out there and prove to yourselves and all the naysayers, who wrote you off, that you are here to carry on the legend of the fighting green machine. So I hope and pray that you all become examples for the future teams as the "promise keepers" of the fighting Gobbler spirit. My prayers be with you.

    Sincerely

    D

  9. With him they had 70 yards running and 80 yards passing and most of the passing yard coming in the last 2 minutes in a 14-10 come from behind victory in District...we lost our QB that game after the first Quarter so don't believe everything you read. Just sayin'. Not that it matters because you aren't playing Sinton

  10. In all seriousness I'm looking forward to playing a team I've read so much about through the years. This group is young and have matured through the year and it's been a pleasure to watch these Freshman and Sophmores sprinkled in with a few Juniors and Seniors grow up. Whatever the outcome this game represents what Texas High School Football is all about Two History laden teams going at it.

  11. If I seen right Navarro threw like 4 times and 3 of them were late in the game,so Cuero had 10 in the box pretty much the whole game...I hope they put 10 in the box against Mr. Dallas,on the other hand we will load the box cuz Cuero doesn't throw much, looks like to me it may be more like last week!!!

As far as the Navarro game the wind was gusting in the 40's with a downpour the whole game. It rained on both sides of the field and we made adjustments Navarro  didn't. We took away take away their bread and butter because no way was anyone going to have a passing game. BTW that's not fog in that video that's the rain going sideways lol

  12. Ladybug I was referring to all the quotes we heard from the Smoakhouse forum before we played Gilmer. "You haven't seen East Texas speed, They don't look so good on Film, They play down South so the really haven't played anyone"...ect. ect. Gilmer found out that we can play a little football in little ol Cuero if it weren't for a goal line stand at the 5 holding us out of the end zone in the final minute and for Stump's heroics that day lol ...I'll leave it at that. From what I've been reading and the picks we don't have much of a chance again but I think we'll show up anyway. To reach State Finals 10 times means we've went through Region 3 a few times so we look to make it 11 trips to the finals after Saturday. We know we're the underdog but it's been that way after finishing second in our District and throughout the Playoffs. We never had a chance against Devine. Navarro and Sinton yet here we are in all our glory lol. It should be a good game Saturday I just hope we can stay on the same field as you guy's after all we are picked to get blownout....again. Good luck to both teams.

  13. Hello WOS folks. I'll just say this... This will be Gilmer pt.2 but with a whole different type of offense for Cuero. I've always wanted us to play the Mustangs just to see all the athletes you guys produce year in and year out. The Gobblers will still lace up their cleats  and stand toe to toe with WOS even if we don't have the athletes that you have and play some ball. We may not be what everyone is looking for as far as stats go but these kids deserve to be here just as much as WOS and they won't be intimidated if that's what you're hoping for. They will give 110% for each other and their family and community that's just the way it is here so win or lose WOS will know they've been in a game. Good luck to both teams and ... GO MEAN GREEN!!!!
