According to what Bullets posted, HJ could have beaten HF by a "Yates" score. Looks as though they called the dogs off somewhat. If HJ played in the manner of how Yates is playing, then I say they were wrong in running up the score. But from what I gather, they did not do that. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
it was 49-7 after HJ pressed during the first half, BUT the starters played maybe half of the first half, and the 2nd and 3rd strings probably split the remaining time. HJ quit pressing coming out in the second half, and their starters got just a couple of minutes each in the 2nd half. HJ could have really run up the score if they wanted to. In the 1st quarter when the starters played most of the quarter and the press was on, HJ had 10 or more steals, and HF probably only took 5 shots. In the second quarter, it was mostly subs doing the pressing, and i still bet HJ had 5 or 6 steals, and HF maybe attempted 10 shots. most of those were in self-defense, with a player turning and chunking up the ball while barely looking at the rim to avoid the relentless pressure. Had HJ's starters played much of the second quarter, you're probably looking at a 65-5 halftime score. Had HJ continued pressing with their starters, HF would've probably fared even worse in the 2nd half as HF would've been badly worn down. In the first half, HF might have set the ball up in an actually offensive set maybe once or twice due to the harrassment of the HJ press. After halftime, HJ pulled the press, and the starters played maybe 5 minutes of the second half. Every trip down HF was allowed to cross mid court and at least TRY to get into an offensive set. They also got about 18-19 minutes to run against the HJ 2nd and 3rd teams, still with no press. Don't get me wrong, the subs still took it to HF, but HJ is no Yates. When the subs come in, there's some quality on the court, but if HJ's starters played their subs in a scrimmage, the scoreline would probably look like it did in this game. It's not like Yates who brings in a team of subs who could probably win their district. Despite all of HJ's efforts, they still scored a lot in the 2nd half. It's not like you can ask the subs to come in and not shoot the ball. They need their work too, and in a game like this, it's a valuable experience for them to get a lot of playing time. Now, i'm not surprised that some people are choosing to fail to see a difference between what HJ did to HF last night and what Yates has done to everyone... here it is as plain as i can put it. Yates presses the whole game... HJ called off the dogs at the start of the 2nd half. Yates brings in a group of subs that would start almost anywhere in the state... HJ brings in a group of subs that is predominantly role players. HJ won by 60. Yates won a game by 135. HJ's subs played more last night than they have any probably any game this season, and HJ subs spent more time on the floor than HJ starters. HJ scored 7 less points in the 2nd half than they did in the 1st, and they wouldn't have broken 90 except for a silly technical foul on HF and two and-1's where they intentionally fouled someone who was going in for an open layup. without this, it's probably 85-31 (a margin of victory similar to Kountze's last night) HJ gave up 9 points in the 1st half, and that was with a lot of subs getting in the game. they gave up 11 points in each of the last two quarters. it's pretty clear that they eased up tremendously on defense. So, talk all you want about double standards, but it's nowhere near the same. it's also worth noting that HJ at no time last night fouled to try and get the ball back so they can break 100. they probably could've broken 100 by the end of the 3rd quarter had they wanted.
of all the years i have been around this match up (rivalry) i have never seen something so disgraceful as a team to be winning ( blowing out another team) then just start show boating i just dont understand what happened to the mercy rule you guys were suggesting
HJ was deep into the bench midway through the 2nd quarter. they called off the press at halftime. the starters got 3 minutes in the 3rd quarter and less than 2 minutes in the 4th. HJ could've broken 150 tonight, and held HF under 15 had they wanted to.
jacoby surely went for 30 tonight... at least. and he spent more time on the bench than on the court!
He scored 8 points in a 30 second span (layup with a foul and a technical for 5 points, followed by a layup and a foul). When Jacoby and Sean Prudhomme (?) played the 1 & 2 on the press, HF couldn't get the ball to midcourt.
yup, there was a stretch in the 1st quarter where it took HF 5 or 6 possessions to cross the midstripe.

If Wise had been coaching HJ tonight, they would've beaten HF approximately 140-10. at least we know one HF fan who wouldn't have had hard feelings. -
thanks veronica and champ... and ron, Why are you being this way? Why can't you just be proud of me as a peer and my gentleman lover?

at HJ, the Hawks win by 20ish.

it's too hard to get results and input from coaches to do an accurate ranking system on here. apart from CoachL and sharkfutbol, i don't know if we have any other regular coaches who post in the soccer forum.
Running up the score is wrong and Im not a fan of it, but that coach did say before the season that they were going for the scoring record. So let Houston Yates get their national glory this year and move on.
he might as well have said "we're going to run up the score every game, but since we're letting you know before hand, it's not poor sportsmanship" -

Yates' 100-point streak ends in win over Westbury

why would nike want him to coach one of their summer jobs... wasn't it wise himself that said that Yates "only knows how to play one way"? I think i'd rather have a coach who spent some time teaching his players various facets of the game beyond simply running-and-gunning and outathleting your opponents. -
What are you saying Dove, that Yates always fouls on purpose in order to get the ball back so they can score 100 points, or that the coach is just doing this for his own personal gains?
whether he's saying it or not, both appear to be true, don't they? -
This is all on a level you would never understand. It's about exposure on a national level. National ranking (not State, local, regional, etc). It's about Nike pushing some buttons in the future for some people.
and what level is that, exactly? i know you aren't more intelligent than me, so why are you able to see the "clear picture" while all i see is some jackass running up the score on inferior opponents? is it from your experience with your nike shoe deal? or was it when you played for that high school basketball team that was ranked #3 in the nation? was it when you were a top recruit? their 1000 point win earlier in the season has gotten them plenty of exposure. their 43-game win streak has given them plenty of exposure. their #3 national ranking has given them plenty of exposure. fouling to get the ball back and score 100 points is not going to help any of these kids get scholarships. all it will do is make their coach look even worse than he already does. -
Most of us over 40 crowd never played soccer, so we don't understand the game. it just looks like a bunch of kids kicking a ball around. Same with hockey. If you don't play a game, ever, it's not easy to like. One other thing. In football, when a collision happens, the players try to get up and act like they are not hurt. In soccer, if you touch the other guy, he rolls around like he is in agony. For me, a non soccer fan, it's a bit of a turnoff. JMHO
you make a good point. and a lot more of the "under-40" crowd knows soccer these days. soccer moms are raising soccer children. i don't think it will ever catch up with the big three in the US, but i can definitely see soccer overtaking hockey and golf in popularity in the next couple of decades. -
