1. I heard them talking about it last night during MLS pregame.  That's pretty sweet!  He'll definitely be the best player the MLS has ever had.
2. soccer's a second class citizen in SETX.  many of the players prefer to play other sports instead of playing soccer year round.  That's not the only explanation, but it's a partial one.
3. isn't this the case pretty much every year?  "great" recruiting classes that either don't materialize, or the players come and underperform.  I'm with Lumber... i'll believe it when i see it.
4. i watched the game, and the tackle was pretty nasty.  i thought it was a red card foul when i saw it.  there were also several fouls in that game committed by portsmouth that should've been carded, but the ref wasn't handing them out.  if he had been, this foul might have happened.  the only good news for me is that i don't particularly like germany or ballack, but this still sucks royally for him.
5. From the Beaumont Enterprise online: [Hidden Content] Southeast Texas anglers can look forward to the opportunity to cast a line from a new fishing pier at Walter Umphrey State Park - something they haven't been able to do since before Hurricane Ike. Jefferson County Commissioners on Monday approved plans for the pier restoration project at the park, located on Pleasure Island in south county. Precinct 3 commissioner Michael Shane Sinegal said plans call for the pier to be rebuilt as it was before - a lighted walkway jutting into Sabine Lake - but concrete bulkheads will replace wooden pilings. Don Rao, the county engineering superintendent, said the county plans to start advertising for bids on Wednesday, and in four weeks, should open the bids to contractors. The project is about two months ahead of schedule, Sinegal said.
6.
I'm going for Germany and the US...  I see Brazil, Germany or Italy winning though.
i have my doubts about italy this year.  they always seem to do well in the Cup, but i'm predicting a poor showing from them.  they went 7-0-3 in qualify, but against a weak group, and only scored more than 2 goals in a game once.  with an anemic offense against weak teams, they're going to have trouble scoring against the best teams in the world, even if their defense can hold opponents to only a goal or two a game.  since they won the world cup in 06, they've slowly dropped in the fifa rankings, and are currently 5th.  don't get me wrong, they have the talent and the pedigree to win it all, but i just don't feel it this time around.
7.
I know it might be long shot but I seriously have faith that Mexico will triumph and come out holding the trophy
not a chance... but: i wouldn't be surprised if they go further than expected, maybe to the quarters or semis.  several of the sites for the games in South Africa are being played at altitudes similar to that at Azteca Stadium, which will certainly play into Mexico's favor.
8. In what may already be a lost season in Houston, Astros fans can at least look forward to watching Roy Oswalt pitch every fifth day. Houstonians had better savor those starts since it is no guarantee Oswalt will finish the season in Texas. Oswalt, who has a full no-trade close, said in a Thursday interview on XM's MLB Network Radio that he would not automatically close the door on a possible deal. Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle wrote earlier this week that the Astros may have no choice but to deal Oswalt. With Carlos Lee and Lance Berkman off to dismal starts, Oswalt is valuable trade bait for GM Ed Wade. "That kind of decision appears to be weeks away, but if the losing continues, the Astros would be silly to hold on to their most valuable commodity at a time they have so many holes," Justice writes.
9. Swinging a wooden bat, Through 55 games in his 2010 Junior College season, Harper is batting .417/.509/.917 (AVG/OBP/SLG) with 71 runs scored, 23 home runs, 68 RBIs, 16 SBs, and a 1.426 OPS. He has led his Southern Nevada Coyotes to the Scenic West Title.  and he's still just 17.
10. I'd have to say those are the two safest picks.
11. A few notable omissions:  Charlie Davies, Freddy Adu, Conor Casey.
12. This is the 30-man preliminary roster for the US.  They still have to cut 7 men to get down to the 23-man roster for the world cup. Goalkeepers: Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England), Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton, England), Tim Howard (Everton, England). Defenders: Carlos Bocanegra (Rennes, France), Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Steve Cherundolo (Hannover, Germany), Jay DeMerit (Watford, England), Clarence Goodson (IK Start, Norway), Chad Marshall (Columbus), Oguchi Onyewu (AC Milan, Italy), Heath Pearce (Dallas), Jonathan Spector (West Ham, England). Midfielders: DaMarcus Beasley (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), Alejandro Bedoya (Orebro, Sweden), Michael Bradley (Borussia Moenchengladbach, Germany), Ricardo Clark (Eintracht Frankfurt, Germany), Clint Dempsey (Fulham, England), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles), Maurice Edu (Glasgow Rangers, Scotland), Benny Feilhaber (AGF Aarhus, Denmark), Stuart Holden (Bolton, England), Sacha Kljestan (Chivas USA), Robbie Rogers (Columbus), Jose Torres (Pachuca, Mexico). Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Hull, England), Edson Buddle (Los Angeles), Brian Ching (Houston), Robbie Findley (Salt Lake), Herculez Gomez (Puebla, Mexico), Eddie Johnson (Aris, Greece).
13.
a 7-0 loss tonight...were not going to the playoffs
well, as a rangers fan, i always try to root for the stros as long as they're not playing in the silver boot series.  you guys are welcomed to come jump on the ranger bandwagon, as they're currently a game up in their division...
14. I have a buddy with season tickets to the Dynamo, so i get a chance to get good tickets before they go on sale!!!
15. The Rangers rallied today for a run in the 9th, and 2 more in the 11th to win 3-1 over Seattle, completing a 3-game sweep.  They've won 8 of their last 11 and are now alone in 1st place in their division.
16.
who scored?
anyone?
17. The Rangers picked up a big win tonight in Seattle in 12.  They got 9 innings of 3-hit, 0-run, 10-k ball from starter Colby Lewis, and then their relievers got out of 1-out, bases loaded jams in the 10th and 11th.  The Rangers scored two in the 12, and then closer Neftali Feliz, who has been struggling, pitched a 1-2-3 12th for the save.  Great win, and the Rangers picked up a game on everyone in the division tonight!
