1. Mexico didn't look good, but advanced over South Africa on goal differential.  Uruguay won the group.
2. the trout running anywhere?  i'm back in town and ready to fish!
3.
I tried one of the party boats out of Galveston for a bay trip today was my first time I'll definitely be taking more trips with them you can't beat it for the price plus I caught the biggest fish of the trip that helped but in the next few weeks I'm gonna try an offshore trip with them.
snapper fishing, or what?
4. New Zealand, considered by many to be the weakest team in the tournament, managed a tie against #4 Italy today.  This was more of a shocker than Switzerland beating Spain.  They now have 2 points, and can advance with a win over paraguay, which, although not likely, will be a lot easier to do that drawing with Italy.
5. on a day where almost everyone has struggled, tiger shot a 5-under 66 to vault up the leaderboard.  he was 7-under on his last 15 holes.  he's currently alone in 3rd @ 1-under, although there are two golfers at -5.  only 5 golfers have made it to the clubhouse with scores under par, and none close to his -5.  we'll have to wait and see if the leaders fall back to him at all.  even if they don't, they're both young, and his presence alone might be enough to mess them  up tomorrow.
6. the rangers just won their seventh straight game, all on the road, and clinched their 6th straight series.  they've got one more at houston, and then take on the pirates, then get the astros in arlington so the streak might continue for a bit longer.
7. not to make it sound like an us vs. them thing, it seems like we're victimized by the officials in every major competition we play in.  it's usually cheap red cards.  i can remember bad red cards given in the first two games of last year's world cup, in the first two games of the olympics, and in the first two games of the federation's cup.  i think nearly all of those were in the 1st half of the game as well, basically eliminating any chance the US had to win.

9. Anelka got sent home after cursing out his coach.  France is probably out anyway.
10.
5.0.  9 K.  Dn 1-0
unbelievable.  First 3 starts in the majors and i can almost guarantee you that you can't find a pitcher (maybe 1 or 2, but i doubt it) who can take their three highest K totals for the year and add up to a higher number than he has.
11. So here are the possibilities in which the US can advance: US and England both win, and both advance.  since they both currently have a goal difference of 0, whoever wins by the most would take the top seed. If they both win by the same amount, whoever has scored the most goals in the cup will take the top seed.  If that doesn't separate it, it would be a random draw. US and England both tie:  That would give them each 3 points, and Slovenia would win the group with 5.  Since they would have each tied all three games, goal difference would be 0 for both.  It would then go to goals scored, and the US currently holds a 3-1 advantage in that, so England would have to make up two goals to force a random draw (England ties 2-2, US ties 0-0, for example) or make up 3 goals to advance (England ties 3-3, US ties 0-0) which would be pretty unlikely.  US ties and England loses:  This would put Slovenia on 7 points, US on 3, England on 2, and Algeria on 2. The England tie today helped the US.  If England had won today, there was a possibility of a 3-way tie at the top at 5 points if the US won their next game, and England had tied.  Now, US is guaranteed to advance with a win, and also has a slim chance of advancing with a tie. Please feel free to correct me if i got any of this wrong.  I just got a migraine trying to figure it all out in my head.
12.
The ref's did a top notch job today and should be proud of themselves   :-[  But on a serious note, the US did alot better in the second half and need to do the same nxt wednesday vs algeria. Defensively they dont look sharp and hopefully they will get it figured out by then. Question...Now the United States needs to win and in doing so score more than England does if they are to win also to advance right?
If the US and England both win, goal differential won't matter.  Right now, US and England are on 2 points, Slovenia is on 4, and Algeria is on 1.  A US and England win means they'd both have 5 points and advance, with Slovenia with 4 and Algeria with 1 being eliminated.
13. Algeria has held England to a 0-0 draw through 75 minutes.  This could make for an even more interesting final day of action for Group C if the result holds up.  Regardless of the result of this game, US controls their own destiny.  if they find a way to beat Algeria by 2 goals or more, they're guaranteed to advance.  A draw for Algeria here could actually benefit the US, as when the US/Algeria game rolls around, Algeria is likely to sit back and try to just get a point for pride if they actually have a chance to advance with a win...
14. The rangers have now won 5 straight series, and 5 straight games after sweeping the Marlins.  They're facing the stros this weekend, which has been a good thing for most of their opponents this year.  For once i don't feel bad rooting against the astros, as they're done for the year anyway.
15. REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- The 20-year-old son of former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vandalism and assault charges stemming from a fight with his mother. Nikolai Bonds entered the plea Thursday as part of a deal with San Mateo County prosecutors. Three additional misdemeanor charges dropped. Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe says Bonds was sentenced to four days in jail, but given credit for time served. Authorities say Bonds threw a doorknob at his mother, Sun Bonds, spit in her face and stopped her from leaving through the front door of her Menlo Park home on Dec. 5 after she suggested his friends may have taken jewelry. Wagstaffe says prosecutors reached a deal because Sun Bonds refused to cooperate in the case.
16. oh yeah, and the Findley handball was terrible.  not only did it kill a play where the ball was bouncing around in their goal mouth, it also means he's out for the next game.  this is a shame, because i thought he finally showed he deserves his spot on the field today.
17. the ref in this game was terrible.  there were several non-calls or fouls against slovenia that went against the US.  on the goal that was disallowed, he missed THREE blatant holds that could've gone for PK's, plus disallowed the goal on a phantom foul against the US.  as bad as they played in the 1st half, the US looked pretty good in the 2nd, and deserved the win they were cheated out of.  Defensively, I don't know what to say.  Against England we did well the last 86 minutes, but today it wasn't good.  Gooch might not be ready to be out there yet.
18.
Donovan did great.  Doesnt change the fact our defense is not good.   And thank goodness Torres is off the field.  Hope he sees no more action this cup.
what did torres do wrong?  he wasn't great, but at least he didn't spend the whole game falling down like ricardo clark does.
19. i didn't read the article, but yes, they're capable of beating the US.  that being said, they SHOULD NOT.
20. things are looking up in the goal scoring department.  3 goals in the first game of the second set of games, and then 3 goals in the first half so far this morning of Argentina/S. Korea, although two of the goals have come off of brutal defensive mistakes.
21. I'm in dead last in the pickems, but i'm kicking butt in the fantasy team league!
22.
Why is scoring down so much this Cup?  Statistically, is the number of shots on goal down, or what?  And look at Spain.  Plays practically the entire game on the attacking third and loses 1-0.  Of course, in the last 5 WC games they've played, Swiss have let up 0 goals...
i still think the ball has something to do with it.  25 goals between the 32 teams in the first 16 games is hard to ignore.  maybe they're starting to figure it out, though, as Uruguay went off for 3 goals today in their second game.
23. LOS ANGELES -- Celtics center Kendrick Perkins landed awkwardly trying to haul in an offensive rebound midway through the first quarter of Tuesday's NBA Finals game with an injured right knee. The Celtics announced that Perkins was undergoing X-rays and would not return to the game. As for his availability for a potential Game 7, Celtics coach Doc Rivers told ESPN that Perkins would be re-evaluated Wednesday. Perkins spilled hard to the floor after being sandwiched between Andrew Bynum and Kobe Bryant as the trio battled for the rebound under the Boston basket with 5:30 to play in the first frame. Dr. Brian McKeon attended to Perkins during a timeout on the floor and Perkins hobbled off using Brian Scalabrine, Glen Davis and Shelden Williams as crutches. He went straight to the locker room for further examination. Rasheed Wallace took Perkins' place in the lineup. Perkins played the first 6:30, missing the only shot he took. The Celtics lead the series 3-2 and are trying to wrap up their 18th championship.
24.
US need a win especially after Slovenia already has a win so it would be huge for us to potentially take the group lead! But we will take additional motivation. I hope their us no let down from the huge England game
a tie against slovenia and a win against algeria would probably ensure the US advancing, but a loss and they're pretty much done.
