I was torn between the L-train and Ozen last week in my pick'ems. My first instinct was Lumberton, but I read too many predictions and over rationalized the pick and went with Ozen. I should have listened to RaiderGirl....LOL
I may have to jump on the L-train after last week. Can I sit by you RaiderGirl?...

This football season is wide open!!  I don't see any team that is just head and shoulders above the rest, so each team better bring it every week.

Lamar is very likely a playoff team this year, and I don't think Sam took Lamar seriously enough.  Lamar shredded the Kat D in the Ist half.  I guess the Kats figured if they could run with Tech, then Lamar would be no problem.  The D was better in the 2nd half, but the 21 point halftime deficit was just too much.  It wasn't that many years ago that Sam beat Lamar by 70, but Lamar is now the real deal.  These two teams might see each other again in Dec.

This is the issue with the argument.
It is only be looked at by you in terms of competition within an athletic team. Competition for these small schools is based on playing other schools and communities. The rivalry games are fiercer. The district games are bloodier. Basketball is actually more of a contact sport than 11-man football. The players on these teams are playing for their communities and their teammates. For the really small schools their teammates are the ones they have played their entire life with their family. They understand the importance of family. It is not just about cuts. You learn life skills in everything you do. Human nature is to naturally be competitive so just because you do not have to worry about being cut does not mean a person is not competitive. In our school it was everything. Everyone wanted to do best on a test. Nobody wanted to lose. Our practices were harder than the games. We cared so much that people played with broken foots, torn ACLs, broken noses, and many more. It was for our teammates. There was a student at another school that twice during football season had to be careflighted from the field to a hospital because of concussion injuries. He was told not to do any more sports. I heard about him when he was at a track meet a couple months later running hurdles. That is the human nature. Everyone is competitive. Some more than others, but at the small schools they learn to fight for everything.
Smaller schools as I said yesterday allow for the teachers to actually know their students. It allows the parents to be more involved because they the teachers in the grocery stores and at the doctors. I do not have the statistics but statistically the majority of students do better in smaller class sizes. Everything today is about finances and what makes the most sense. I was in class yesterday and people were talking about how in other countries students are given a test around 14 to see what type of school they need to go to. I have a problem with that because students do better when the teachers know them and how the student will learn best. This can't be done at a large school compared to small schools. If people really care about the future then they would understand that different students do better in different environments, so closing all small schools adversely affects many while helping few.
More examples to disprove your theory:
What would you do about Lindsay ISD? They have 190 students and are located 15 miles from Sherman. They are also the best academic school in the state. If you need proof look at the UIL Academic results from the last ten years. Their name is first almost every year with dozens of students placing every year. According to your reasoning they should be shut down because their is a larger school close by.
What about Brock? Name something they compete in they do not win and they have less than 500. Heck they started UIL football last year and are already favored to win state this year. Weatherford is ten miles away but they are awful at everything. Your reasoning says Brock should be closed and consolidated with Weatherford, even though that would only hurt Brock children.
The last example is a school near me that athletically can compete with anyone. Everything else they do should make them closed, but I am basing my argument just on athletics. This school has one of the best cross country teams in the state. In the 90s and early 2000s they could compete against everyone in the state. They only had 35-40 students, but one year they beat the No. 1 team in the State at a 5A meet a week after that No. 1 team had just beaten the No. 1 team in the country. Just recently their ag mechanics team swept Houston, San Antonio, Fort Worth and San Angelo stock shows. They had 30 students in the school and were beating schools that are 6A and even larger merged ag mechanics programs. This is the definition of smalls schools. They want to win everything.
Are their negatives with small schools? Yes. The school I just mentioned has so many criminal problems coming from the administration it is shocking TEA has not closed them down, but overall small schools do more to help the students and the community. They do not always make financial sense. They do however teach important life skills. Fight for everything. Never take anything for granted. Remember the importance of family. Actually knowing your classmates instead of their names. These are just some of the things found in small schools that are difficult to accomplish in large schools.

All I'm gonna say today is that I went to multiple schools. One was as small as 30. The largest had 300 students in the grade. I was top of the class at all of them. The best school was the school with 30 because the teachers were able to learn about and care about the students they had. It made classes easier because you knew the people not just the name.
As for competition, where I'm from the small school students are more competitive in everything. We take that lesson to life because of people like you. We know that we have to fight for everything and nothing is earned. We are the schools with that the entire town rally around on Friday nights. We are the ones who would die on the field for not just our teammates or our family. We would die on the field for the community. We hate placing 2nd in UIL Academic events. That's heart and fight, two skills that are needed to survive in real life.
In College I still strive to be the best to prove who I am. Nothing is for granted. I learned that from a small town, not a large school. Would it make financial sense to consolidate? Yes, but we are talking about what are best for students our future. You mention life skills, well small schools teach that more than anywhere else.
Finally consolidation would mean the end of 6-man. Who wants that?

I teach Economics at a Community College. I have students that come from both large and small schools. A large percentage of my students are Dual Credit high school students taking college classes. On the individual level there are achievers and underachievers from both large and small schools. However, if you look at overall performance of students from large schools versus overall performance of students from small schools, the students from small school kick the students from large schools arses every semester. This is of course my experience with the students I actually teach, I personally know of no study that compares the performance of students from large and small schools across the country (not that they aren't out there, I just have never seen one). The idea that students graduating from smaller schools are unprepared and unable to compete in the "big" world is absurd at best.
I would agree that, if reasonably close to one another, consolidation could reduce administrative costs and allow more money to be spent on instruction and even extracurricular activities. That being said, only Nevada, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Mississippi, spend less per student on education than Texas. It's not like we are throwing a lot of money at education to start with.

Keep in mind you are at a Community College and probably have the lower end of the big school kids and the upper end of the small school kids simply because the rural kids are too far from major Universities therefore go to a Community College first
National Merit  Scholars, etc... go directly to a 4 year University
Fact is Community College is more like grade 13 NOT repeat NOT the same as UT, TT, A&M, Lamar, etc...

I try never to let my kids start the day on a negative note. We might fight and argue all the way to school, but I'm yelling "I Love you" as they're getting out of the car.

These comments are mainly directed towards soulja but I see this from several people on this board who I think may have bad memories of where there teams and programs were just a short time ago.  Take Beaumont Central for example. Here is a program that year in and year out has talent but sometimes is good and sometimes is bad. I researched this program top to bottom and found out some shocking information. Central is coming up on its 30 season ever and has an overall record of 173-136-3 and a playoff record of 13-15. They have had 8 Head Coaches Steve Shaver 86-87 (13-6-1) (0-0), Marvin Sedberry Sr. 88-91 (30-13) (1-3), Enoch Dixon 92-2001 49-53-2 (2-3), David Suggs 02-03 (18-6) (2-2), Eric Jackson 2004 (1-9) (0-0), Donald Stowers 05-08 (27-17) (3-3), Andrew Washington 09-2012 (22-23) (3-2), and Toby Foreman 2013-current (13-9) (0-2). There have been two outright district champs Sedberry 89 and Washington in 2010 and two district co champs Sedberry in 1990 and Foreman in 2014. There has never been a Central team go undefeated for a full district schedule. There was one 10 win season which was Suggs in 2003 (10-3). There is only one coach that has taken Central to the playoffs three consecutive years which Sedberry in 89, 90, and 91. More shocking than anything to me was there was only one coach which was Enoch Dixon who stayed at Central more than four years. The most playoffs wins any coach had was three. All of that being said I don't know how you question the direction of a program where it is headed now from where it was just two years ago in 2012 going 2-8 and in 2011 going 3-7.            Here are some pretty good area coaches records in there first few years:  Curtis Barbay first two years as HC of Newton (5-4-1) (8-3). His playoff record after 6 years (0-3). Dan Hooks First year as HC Channelview (5-5) and WOS (7-3) (6-4) (3-7) (7-3). His playoff record after 5 years (0-0). Larry Neumann first 4 years as HC at Nederland (6-5) (7-3) (5-5) (6-4-1) and his playoff record after 4 years (0-2).   Jack Alveraz first two years as HC at West Sabine (7-4) (3-7) first two years as HC at Kirbyville (3-7) (4-6) first two years as HC at Ennis (3-7) (8-3) with a combined playoff record of (0-2). Todd Dodge first two years as HC at Cameron Yoe (3-7) (5-5) First two years at Newman Smith (3-7) (5-5) and first two years as HC at Fossil Ridge (2-7) (5-5) with a combined playoff record of (0-0). Let's not stop in HS Art Briles Georgetown HS (2-7-1) (1-9) Stephenville (4-5-1) (9-3) combined playoff record (1-1). U of H first 2 years (7-6) (3-8) 0 Bowl Wins. Baylor (4-8) (4-8) (7-6) 0 Bowl Wins. Bear Bryant - Maryland (6-2-1) Kentucky (7-3) (8-3) (5-3-2) A&M (1-9) (7-2-1) Alabama (5-4-1) (7-2-2) 0 Bowl Wins. Mack Brown - App State (6-5) (6-5) Tulane (1-10) (4-7) (6-6) NC (1-10) (2-9) 0 bowl wins. Nick Saban - Mich State (6-5-1) (6-6) (7-5) (6-6) 0 Bowl Wins. Let's not stop there lets go NFL Jimmy Johnson - OSU (7-4) (3-7-1) (7-5) (4-5-2) The U first year 8-5 No Bowl Wins. Dallas Cowboys (1-15) (7-9). Tom Landry - Dallas Cowboys first 6 years (0-11-1) (4-9-1) (5-8-1) (4-10) (5-8-1) (7-7) Playoff Record (0-0).         My point is in today society most of these coaches wouldn't have been allowed to coach beyond two or three years because of impatien people and unrealistic people. Most everyone on this list is in some type of Hall of Fame or Hall of Honor or will be! Some of the so called die hard fans on hear should be careful what you wish for! Just my opinion!

If I may add to it the fact that all of the coaches you used which are the best in our area were all able to do one other thing as well. They were able to put together great staffs. The coaches are nly as good as their ability to work with and through there assistants. Great coaches hire great assistants.

I think polls are fun but shouldn't be taken too seriously, especially national polls. There is a reason they change weekly during the season. That being said, it's cool to see your old high school on a national poll.
I remember when EC was so far under the radar no one outside of SETX knew they even existed (their page on MaxPreps was blank). The teams record was so bad the most they could hope for from those that knew who they were was pity. It took a lot of years of hard work and playing pretty good football to change that.
I'm not ready to predict any championships or make any plans to hoist a trophy at NRG (ya gotta beat the Yoes of the world to do that, not show up in a poll)....but things ain't too bad in the rice field....
