1. Jim Gilligan's way has proven to be a reliable formula for Lamar University baseball through 33 seasons and 1,167 victories. So, it was appropriate Tuesday when Beaumont City Council voted unanimously to rename a section of East Florida Avenue to Jim Gilligan Way in honor of the head coach, who ranks sixth among the NCAA's active coaches in career victories with 1,177 (his first 10 came in one season at Western New Mexico). Jim Gilligan Way will extend from Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and past Vincent-Beck Stadium to University Drive. [Hidden Content]
2.
Congrats to Taylor-Want be many kickoff returns against Lamar with the Trahan man ;) ;D
Congratulations to the young man. I hope he is as good as you posted.
3. I've heard Lamar will be getting a new WBB coach next year (hope he hires a good one) and Coach Tidwell will only be the AD. Something I didn't know was his current salary.  He currently makes $120,756 per year plus benefits according to his employment contract, which runs through 2012. This salary was prior to him being elevated to the interim AD. He has to be the highest paid WBB coach in the SLC. But, having to do both WBB/AD he needs a large raise but Lamar is currently on a hiring freeze.
4. Completely agree with your comments about the Louisiana schools.
5. Knowing the people in the athletic department who I know personally I don't think a poster on a message board made them rethink the way they are doing things. Honestly, I wish it did because I know they read this site among others.
6. Should be a great start to the season!
7. My step-father thinks a lot of this man. Congratulations!
8.
This has been rumored for weeks. Tubbs is probably still making about the same money. I look for them to keep the interim tag on him for about a year and if he does good (which I expect he will) they will pull the tag and just hire a new basketball coach. But I'm sure he will coach this year.
I don't want another WBB coach. When Coach Foster was here he was AD and MBB coach for a while, so it can be done. I think Coach Tidwell will do a wonderful job as AD but I think he'll keep coaching too.
9. If I'm Simmons I attempt to take the interm tag off Larry Tidwell and give him a lot more money to be the AD and WBB coach. Yes, he is the MAN! That said I think Coach Tubbs did a lot of good things for Lamar.
10. Agree with your comments but I think there will be 4 super conferences. I'm interested to see how this plays out for the basketball powers like KU, Duke, and a few others. Way too early to know how this affects Lamar and the SLC in general.
11.
It would be nice if these guys had gotten some descent publicity for their accomplishments this far, but finding info on their previous meets and how they made their way to the championships has been challenging throughout the year.
Actually, I've read several articles on www.lamarcardinals.com about Samuel Kosgei, Francis Kasagule and Joonas Harjamaki. I just didn't post them here. Thanks for bringing attention to their accomplishments as they definitely deserve the recognition. Congratulations to all three and good luck as they compete at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at the University of Oregon! 12. My apology as you and I were the only two currently discussing the Lamar baseball program I assumed you were talking about me? You know what they say about assuming?  ;D
13. Great with me, just because I wasn't a college ball player doesn't mean I don't know a little about the game. My brother played college football, later coached at LC-M and the Bears went to the state tournament with Beau Hale who pitched for the Texas Longhorns. So, I've been around the game myself.
14. "you either got it or you don't" Well, if that is the case then why are we continuing to debate the level of competition? BTW, I'm not bashing anyone. Pro scouts go to High Schools too.
15. Clay Hensley was a catcher when he came to Lamar.
16. I didn't pitch at the college level but I did in high school and getting ahead in the count, spotting your pitches, staying low in the zone are important at any level of baseball. Mentally you have to be focused for any game (or atleast I did). Playing for one of the best coaches in the area at the time. I know coaching is vastly important in the development of a pitcher. Our best pitcher played at Lamar back in the 80's. Hard for me to believe you don't think coaching is important for the success of a pitcher (no matter the talent). Especially when we are talking about the mechanics of a pitcher.
17.

Ben Wells is going to SFA.
Hopefully we will make him regret his decision.  It probably comes down to not wanting to be in his hometown.  A lot of kids want to go off to school.  Can't blame him if that is the case.
SFA is much more of a college town with a college atmosphere. The facilities are top notch, and there is no drop off in education. He is guarnteed wins there, not to mention they play A&M this year so he will get scouted even more. I know everyone wants him at Lamar, but as of now he made the right decision.
Lamar will have better facilities than SFA after all the upgrades are done. I know McNeese State has better football facilities and they didn't land Wells either. I do agree with the college town atmosphere and winning there (preseason ranking of 8th in a FCS poll). But I think he just wanted to be away from home.
18. I think you are pretty safe with the camp starting Monday.
19. Your right, I forgot about Purke as he was a 1st round draft pick. I think I found out what you and I disagree about. I don't think facing great hitting teams makes you a better pitcher (maybe makes you have a higher ERA  ;D) I believe it is talent and coaching that makes one a good or great pitcher. We can take your cousin for example. Did he face great hitting while pitching for Lumberton or did he just have outstanding talent? Lamar has a couple pitchers in MLB (Sanches and Hensley) so I think they might not have the talent Clay has but they got great coaching at Lamar.
20. All tournaments come down to pitching. TCU is ranked 7th in the nation for a reason. I'm disappointed Lamar didn't play better but honestly I knew the Cardinals would have to play a perfect game to beat the Horned Frogs. Obviously, they didn't but after playing 40+ games I think they saw some good hitters and pitchers. TCU is loaded from the top of the order to the bottom. I believe the #9 hitter in the order is hitting .330 or above for the season. Plus, they pitched their #1 guy. Even if Lamar played a tougher OOC schedule they would not see a Top 25 teams #1 pitcher, especially during mid-week games.
21.
Augie and graham get it done every yr, I didn't want to go to Lamar lol, I went Galveston when Corbell was there and when they were the San jac of juco baseball and were a pipeline of getting ton of players drafted  but had 2 surgeys and never got back to 100 percent, but still got to throw 346 innings at the college level, but I had no intentions to ever goin to Lamar out of hs.
That's cool a lot of kids want to get away for college. Sorry to hear about your (I assume) arm injuries.
22. Man, you played at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi? Did you pitch there? Gotta give you props as a college ball player but it makes more sense as to the critical remarks about Coach Gilligan. Augie Garrido at UT is in his 70's and Wayne Graham I believe is in his 80's. So I don't see age as a factor here.
23. Coach Gilligan is from New York so I doubt he gets tired of "going back home".
24. Well, he use to recruit a lot out of the New York area but he was criticized for not recruiting locally. Now, he gets local kids and he isn't recruiting good enough. Speaking of recruiting, he got Kevin Millar out of California.
