I do respect and understand where you're coming from, but the fact of the matter is that this site is about setx sports news, and there's no bigger sports news story in setx than this story right now.  I know some on here are uncomfortable with it is because a sports figure that many in this area either know or have played under has done a terrible thing, and it's tough to imagine or acknowledge.  That being said, had the situation been reversed, and a WOS football player been killed by a hit and run driver, i doubt anyone would take issue with those who want to discuss the tragedy.  while it's certainly an uncomfortable story for some to read about, many more have opinions they'd like to share on the matter.  I'm happy to let you know that it has been discussed among the moderators, and we are keeping a very close eye on this thread to make sure that it does not get out of hand.  the beauty of this site is that anyone who does not want to read about or chime in on this story simply has to avoid clicking on the thread.  And on a positive note, an account number has been provided on this thread to help the family, and i know multiple people have already donated to it directly from this website.  that in itself is more than worth any discomfort that the thread itself might cause as far as i'm concerned.

Although my son and his team were knocked out of the playoff picture last Friday night, I suddenly realized this week will be his last HS practices and game.
We are very lucky that he will get to go on to pursue his education and play at the next level, but as he told me "Dad it just isn't the same as my HS team"
Got me thinking so I found this while surfing the web.

    Dear FOOTBALL PARENT,
You dreaded this year’s arrival, but it has come just the same. A year full of promise, but so many “last times.” Over the years you have helped with countless team meals, washed mounds of sweaty uniforms, chauffeured to more early morning practices then you care to remember. You have been top-of-the-world elated when your son has had a good night and endured his deathlike silences when he hasn’t. It is amazing how the family mood bobs with the rhythm of each game. You have laughed, cried, screamed, sulked, pouted, sweat, pulled your hair, bit your nails, bit your tongue, paced, worried, shoved, frowned, and smiled all very gracefully and within a two hour span.
Such is the life of a football parent.
You may not be in on the big play, but you feel the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat right along with your son. You keep your composure when some fan behind you wants your son’s head while the opponent on the field is mashing it into the grass. “Get off him, that's my baby” you’d like to shout! You breath football at this time of year, especially this time of year when your heart whispers “just a little longer” as the season slides by. You plead and bargain, knowing full well that some other parent on the opponent's team is making their own deal with the Almighty, but you do it anyway, because you no more want it to end than your son does. You do not want to see the desperation in his eyes and the pain on his face as he struggles to put away his childhood dreams. You are helpless in the stands, with no way to make it better.
    Is it worth it?
    YOU BET IT IS!
Every lost game sock, busy Friday night. Every recovering Saturday, every aspirin, every ruined hair do, hot bath, goose bumps, and every obnoxious fan and sports writer you’ve had to tolerate is worth it. The fun isn’t measured by how many times your son gets into the newspaper, the game, or what he does when he gets there. The fun - what makes those trips to the ER for the pigskin stitches all worthwhile, is watching a game, what a sport experience can do to convert your little boy into a young man. Watching him tackle the world and you have a front row seat.
You still see that rambunctious 5 yr old playing football in the yard. You bite your lip and hold back the tears because though you are fiercely proud of the young man he has become, you miss the boy. In fact you mourn for all the little boys. You have watched them grow up together, plot and scheme together, win and lose together. They have raided your kitchen, camped out in your basement, stole your heart. They are blessed with something they will never have again. They know it and you know it. So you pray that wonder will last another game, and then another, because as long as it does, you hang on to a piece of your boy for a bit longer. Watching him walk off that field one last time will be no less painful then giving birth to him all those years ago.
We will miss this group of young men.
We will miss watching them run on to the field like soldiers going to battle, the hi-fives after a great play, the chest slams after a great tackle, the celebrations over a big win and the sober faces after a disappointing loss. We will miss watching the boys we love, play the game they love.....Football.

Most people see this game and team from their kids perspective not the team. I feel this is a problem because all the kids read this. The coaches read it and don't care what everyone thinks. It's when the kids read it and know their parents and friends parents screen names. Chances are that the parent has bashed the coach at home way more than on the board. This causes the kid to not trust the coach. When this happens, the kids won't play hard for someone they don't trust. I'm not saying agree with every decision the coach makes, but use it as a tool to help your child. This old world is a cruel hard place to survive. If they get screwed over or lose a game because of the coach, there is a huge life lesson to learn in this. It is up to the parent to teach their kid that sometimes life isn't fair and yoi have to overcome that. It is easy to bash the coach or decision maker and call them stupid. What does that teach our kids. These coaches spend a lot of time preparing. The head coaches make pretty good money, but asst coaches don't. Parents need to be parents and raise their kids. I would hope that your child will grow up to be a better person when taught how to deal with adversity

Having an opinion is not a problem. Bashing someone is a problem in this forum.
I thought that PNG had some play calls last week that leave me scratching my head.... although thrilled since I am a Nederland fan. I think that not liking a play call or saying that it seemed foolish for running a double reverse inside of the 5 yard line was not a good call when the defense is in a goal line defense is not the issue.
Saying that the coach is an imbecile, needs to get a life, needs to be terminated immediately or other such statements are the issue.

I have seen these groups from png and nederland battle since 7th grade. It is always a fight except that 9th grade game I believe. I try to block it out. I know this is gonna make some people mad, but the horses are not there for png to be world beaters. Don't get me wrong, they are a solid setx football team. Very capable of winning district or finishing 2nd. They have some buzz saws sittin just west of the trinity waiting on the first round. It is a cycle people. You have a coach at png that is good to his kids and they love him. He make make some bad calls, but I promise some of you would not make the calls 100 percent of the time. Be careful what you wish for because you could run him off and get something much much worse. Any one remember Bobby august. Neumann is the top of the class in our district. No doubt about that, but be realistic, are you gonna win state every year?  It seems to me that yes that is the ultimate goal for all teams, but only 1 can do it. Support your team and see what happens. Parents that bash a coach to their kids create a hostile and untrusting attitude within the team you support. Fairclothe is not the only dist coach that Neumann owns. He is just at the top of the list this week

Everyone is entitled to do things the way they deem fit. I know this has been discussed on here before about PNG. I can't remember their reasons and the fans seem OK with not sharing them again.
I could really care less is they stand, sit, whatever, as long as the players are acting in a respectable manner, which IMO they were.
As a fan we don't "take a knee". The coaches do not "take a knee". We both sit or stand quietly. We might pray if that's our inclination. We should, however, not shout down the other teams from across the field for not doing what we do.That seems to be a contradiction.
From what I've heard the young man is doing just fine. Hopefully he will be ready for Friday night.

My thoughts on taking a knee. Seriously injured take a knee if it makes a player feel better  out of respect. But yelling and screaming because a team didn't take a knee is way more disrespectful than not taking a knee. I do believe though taking a knee is becoming something of the past. Having complete silence when a kid is seriously injured from both sides speaks way louder than taking a knee or getting angry and yelling "take a knee".

Prayers for the injured player that it was not serious.
I can't believe grown people are on here talking about our team not hitting a knee. Hitting a knee is not out of respect for the injured. It was started in junior leagues so that when a kid got injured the other kids stayed in one place and weren't roaming all over while the coaches checked on the injured kid. Back in my days we never hit a knee. Hell I watched two years in a row, 85 & 86, a QB for PNG get a compound fracture to their leg playing French. French never hit a knee while they were working on either one of them. This hitting a knee has gotten out of hand. Believe me I am very concerned when a kid gets an injury to that severity but hitting a knee is not going to do anything for it. I saw a few kids hit a quick knee a send a prayer up for him that I guess most weren't seeing because they were more worried why we were not acting like a junior league team.

Looking forward to this one tonight, its always fun when PNG rolls into town, bringing with them thousands of fans, all decked out in purple.  It creates an atmosphere around the game, that has long since faded here in the Baytown area. I will be bringing my youth football team to this one tonight after our practice, to give them a dose of what high school football still means to some people.  I cant think of a better way to spend a Thursday night in my own backyard.  Heres to a great game tonight, and safe travels to all the GREAT fans from PNG!!!!
