It's really sad when you have talent on a team and they aren't "allowed" to play basketball until the fourth quarter when the game is already somewhat out of reach.  I believe basketball is somewhat of a rhythm sport and you can't get into a "rhythm" just in the fourth quarter.  It has to start in the beginning (first quarter) and continue through the end of the game.  Yes, you have to allow room for error and yes you also have to correct some errors but I don't feel that one turnover or one bad pass or one foul or one missed shot is a reason to pull a player.  If the broadcast is still up you can watch the Silsbee vs HJ game and see that there were numerous turnovers just in the first quarter/half on both sides but the "rhythm" set in and players settled down and got it together.  I really hope a "change gon come" SOON at HF.  Believe it or not the HF teams can hang with the best of them.

I think that if HF would have played some tougher competition before district it would have helped them out some.

Take Legacy for example that is undefeated in district play

HF will need to play some tougher competition if they want to compete with Silsbee & HJ

List of a few teams HF played before district:

Liberty
Deweyville
Tarkington
Deweyville
Buna
Milburn Academy
Sabine Pass
Vidor

It is hard to get in a rhythm when you are going up agianst something you have never seen before

I would have to disagree Tiger05.  HF hasn't "gone up against" any teams that they haven't seen before.  They have been playing the same teams that they play in district since Little Dribblers.  I understand that some players develop faster and/better during the transition from Little Dribblers to Middle School to High School but I know that just as other teams have developed so has HF.  Again, the teams that HF has played whether preseason or district are nothing that they aren't used to.  Their rhythm has nothing to do with who they are playing.  It's an inside job.
Interesting point you make! I also felt HF's schedule was weak but maybe there is a reason why , and only the coach can probably answer this question.

To obtain a rhythm I would think you would have to have some repetitiveness in practice and in playing high caliber teams before district

If the answer to my assessment was No than can you answer these questions:

1. How many teams has your team played before district
That best resembles the best teams in your district

2. Does your team continuously play the same level of competition even after basketball season

I agree with Tiger05. You need to play competition better than what you see in your district. You do that and the game slows down once district starts. You play a bunch of powder puffs to pad your record and it shows in district. As is happening to HF now, the game is way too fast for them and they can't keep up.

First, Tiger05, your point about having "some repetitiveness in practice and playing high caliber teams before district" I agree with which is why I said "It's an inside job".  I understand that just like raising kids starts at home...well raising basketball players and putting together a basketball team starts "at home" in the gym.  Just like kids need their parents, a team needs a ........  I was trying not to go there!  I can say that the answer to your second question would be "no" the "team" doesn't play the same level of competition even after basketball season.  Some take it upon themselves as individuals to do so but others don't even look at a basketball after basketball season is over but then when basketball season starts again everyone wants to play and once you get to high school it's not little dribblers, i.e. everyone doesn't have to qualify, i.e. you don't have to play every player on your bench and everyone who signs up for basketball should not make the team.  But again I say it starts at "home".

It depends, you can say that tiger05. Silsbee is tridition rich in basketball. I do agree with what you are saying but it also depend on the team. In 2005 a group of young men from Orangefield who had never won at the lower levels. Never won period, made the playoffs for the first time in 56 years. Their schedule was weak but with each win they gained confidence. So in this case it worked. They even won a bi-district game and hung in there with your silsbee tigers until the second half. Teams that are not use to winning sometimes need that confidence. I am not saying that works all the time but it apparently worked for us. Not to mention we had a good coach that helps also.

You are correct:
Getting repetitive wins will boost confidence, which will help you play better
Plus having a good coach helps too

Never said HF did not have a good coach because I do not know. All I know is we had a good coach in 2005. 8)

Coaches can make a huge difference in a team ,no doubt about it but it's way to easy for them to get all the blame.I don't buy the weak schedule in HF'S case because they didn't beat a lot of these clubs.Playing tough competition makes you better but if you are getting beat by the cupcakes on your schedule it isn't gonna help you play tougher competition.Usually these coaches know more about the skill sets of these players than the parents do.No one wants to win worse than the coach.

It takes a mix of many things. You need to have players that are committed and coachable.  If you want to be successful, they have to put time in while basketball season is not going on.  They have to improve individually during the summer as well as playing as a team.  Players will not progress and get better just during basketball season.  Also, you have to have a coach that is committed.  He has to be willing to open the gym and go watch summer league games and put additional time in so his players can get better.  You also have to have a good athletic period situation.  Athletic periods that focus on getting "bigger, faster, stronger" benefit one sport.  Coaches need to be able to design workouts that benefit the kids in their program specific to their sport.  Good teams will come along, but good programs are established by hard work on many peoples part.  Don't lay everything in the lap of one person.

THANK YOU bballgod.  You are right in all you said...it takes a lot of different things and someone up top has to want the program to be better too.  The parents want it, the kids want it, the community wants it but it's not happening...???...what else do you do.

So what are the suggestions to get the athletic department more involved with communicating with the HF community and discuss common goals? I know for a fact the coaches don't like losing, what coach does? Maybe a townhall meeting with the athletic dept.
Maybe that is the answer, or at least the beginning to finding a answer. I doubt seriously that anyone from HF Admin. would want to openly discuss school issues on this board. It may be what some would want, but not really the right thing to do. I know I wouldn't.
School board elections will be in May. So if you are realy wonting a change, when that person comes and knocks on your door, and asks for your vote, man up and ask them right there face to face. What is you stance with the program. Dont hide behind this sreen and wate for someone to do the dirty work.  If you wont to change anything it will only start at the top and work down.
