Washington was a colonel in the British army but then joined the rebels. He was a traitor to his country. Most of the population? I’m reminded of an old story from the Cold War, which I cannot confirm, that in the plans to attack America (yes, all major militaries have contingency plans to attack virtually anywhere) the Russians had a statement that they would not attack through Texas due to the armed citizenry and Texas mindset.
