I've never seen a junior high that doesn't play its players both ways. This isn't high school. Think about it. It's only one grade level. High school has 10th, 11th and 12th all on the same varsity team. Even then they still play guys both ways a lot of times. If a 4A high school had to play only seniors, then probably every single player would play both ways.

Baytown Lee football program
gary-us-bonds replied to gary-us-bonds's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
BH is right. That part of town is going down the tubes. However, they still have more guys on the team right now that will play college ball somewhere than Barbers Hill does. So, it's not completely talent. -
I thought of a good movie that depicts the path of the Baytown Lee football program the last few years. Wildcats, the movie with Goldie Hawn.... except you have to start at the end of the movie when they are good, then hit rewind and watch it backwards back to the beginning when the qb is selling stolen watches on the sidelines during the game.

Yeah if I could bottle it up and sell whatever it takes to be a winner I would be rich. No doubt that Dayton has a good thing going. Lee has had the bottom fall out after the new coaching hire. Heck, just last year they would have had a fighting chance to win 19-4A.

cbear hit the nail on the head. Look, when Lee was winning, we brought out crowds that make Dayton's home crowds look like a Pee-Wee league game,. It's not about the town or the fans. It's about the W's and the L's. If Stewart leaves and Dayton sinks back to their level that they were for the 75 years before Stewart, then we will see how great their fans are. It's much easier to root for a team that has a chance to make it to state every year. It's also easier for Stewart to go down to the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade levels, because guess what...they are ALL going to be Broncos. Not so easy in Baytown. If a coach goes down to talk to a junior high, half the kids he talks to will not be going to his school. Leads back to the need for a feeder system. You seemed to scoff at this being a problem in my other thread specifically about it, yet here you give a perfect example of how it is helpful.

Dayton is a state championship contender for sure. They looked just a touch away when I saw them against Angleton. You could tell they had the goods though. They just needed to tighten up their execution and cut down their mistakes a little bit. If they were to play Angleton in the playoffs, they would beat them by 25-30.

Junior High Scores for the week of Oct. 12

When does 8th grade play. -
Exactly... The school is needed regardless. This is about correcting a problem that is long overdue. You can make good teams in Baytown either way. That's not the point. The point of this specific thread is that having a true feeder system is better than not having one, and that Goose Creek junior highs have to be getting overcrowded. Put the two together and you have a nice solution to both problems. GC has had 5 junior highs for as long as I can remember. This goes back through the early 80's for sure. They have 3 high schools now. It only makes sense.

Did you post in the wrong thread broncos92? Your comment does not go along with the discussion at hand here.

Baytown Junior is closer to Sterling than it is Lee. Cedar Bayou is closer to Lee than it is Sterling. Whatever the case may be, they just need to get some feeder systems in place.

Olin did build a winner. He had a system that was ahead of its time back in the early 90's. Not a lot of high schools were spreading it out like that. And the fact that Olin built a winner is not really relevant to the point. That's like bringing up the Vince Young teams when talking about the Longhorns inability to establish a running game. Just because one outlier is able to overcome all of the inherent roadblocks to success does not make me all warm and fuzzy inside. It's tougher to build a winner the way they have it. The fact that Olin did it is great, but the system would be much more conducive to building a winning program, in all sports, if they had designated feeder schools for each of the three high schools. Creating the winning mentality is the tough part. You have kids that come into 9th grade without a clue on how to play winning football. Maybe if all of Cedar Bayou 8A or Gentry 8A stayed together, they would be able to carry over that winning that they did on that junior high level. They would know how to win as a team and depend on each other. They would already know the system backwards and forwards. Gentry 8A had a powerhouse when this year's seniors were there. Chance Nelson, CJ Mixon, etc. Some of them went to Lee and some to Sterling, some even ended up at GCM, so it was time to start all over again with a whole different system and different teammates. Look, I'm not saying this as a cure-all to all of Baytown's troubles in sports. Why not take the avenue with the best possible chance of future success instead of stacking the deck against yourselves from jump street.

Needs to build a 6th junior high school out by GCM somewhere. They could then designate two junior highs for each high school. This willy nilly system they have now puts all of the high schools three years behind. It's like the USA basketball team trying to get a team together and compete against those other national teams that have been playing together since they were 12. They could have the new junior high and Highlands go to GCM. Baytown Junior and Gentry go to Sterling and Horace Mann and Cedar Bayou go to Lee. I've never understood the logic behind having a little bit from each junior high go to each of the high schools. They gain nothing by doing that. They lose three years of being able to learn one system in sports. Let's assume Gentry has a good 8A team this year. Does it really matter in the long run? Out of the 30(hypothetically) on the team, 10 of them are going to GCM, 15 are going to Sterling and 5 are going to Lee. So, you just have to start all over in 9th grade. It's the same way with every junior high. 25% go to one high school, 15% goes to another and 60% goes to another. Play with the percentages all you like as I am just guessing. And Lee would probably lose out the biggest in this system, because Horace Mann is not a factory for good athletes. Doesn't matter. I would rather someone in Baytown have a chance to build a good athletic program.
I totally agree with this statement. We have a huge problem with this. I know we have a 3 high school district but the district needs to set something up where the Jr High coaches have to be under the High School coach they are feeding to. Right now im pretty sure they can do whatever they want. So school like Dayton and Crosby and Barbers Hill already have a 2 year if not more head start because our kids dont learn a system or a coach till their freshmen year.
I hear the coaches at GCM are getting more involved down at the JR High level. I hope this continues and I hope that at the very least there is one coach down there that can teach the kids some fundamental before reaching the high school.
the GCM coaches have done nothing with the Highlands group and they are getting spanked. Someone posted on here that Dayton beat them 56-6 on the 8th grade a level.
Score was correct but, Highlands appeared to have a good group of athletes. Lots of talent but very unorganized.
That statement sums up the whole Goose Creek athletic program. lol
