School district boundaries don’t follow city limits. NISD has all of Nederland plus healthy portions of Port Neches and Port Arthur and all of Central Gardens and Beauxart Gardens. PN-GISD loses roughly a quarter of Port Neches to NISD and a fifth of Groves to PAISD, though it picks up two neighborhoods in Port Arthur.

It’s more like both districts have a town and a half; the number of residents and households the two districts have is almost always roughly even. When I was in school (PN-G c/o 2011), Nederland had about a hundred more students than PN-G.

The fact that PN-G is ~15% larger than Nederland now is significant. That’s the largest enrollment disparity between the two schools in at least 30 years, maybe longer. What you’re seeing is PN-GISD’s aggressive approach to replacing schools since 2008 paying dividends. Young families took notice.

Exactly right. PN Elementary, Ridgewood Elem, Woodcrest, Van Buren Elem, Old Groves Elem, all torn down now. Brand new or almost new elementary and middle schools in both Groves and PN. And when a couple of the new buildings weren't quite ready for the first day of school last fall, the sh*t hit the fan, if I recall right.

With all the work still going on at NISD, the search for new AD, trying to fix budget short falls no way a Nederland school official was playing golf on a Wed😁

Ha!  I didn't say "school official", I said, (in quotes), "official". I wish I could say more, but anyway ... you'd be surprised, actually, who you see on the golf course some mornings. :)

  3. I just now googled Splendora.  It's in between Patton Village and Midline, south of Cleveland, in case anyone else besides me was wondering.  It boasts a small restaurant called Puebloritaville that looks interesting. Looking at photos of the stadium there, the home side looks big enough to accommodate the PNG crowd, all they'll need to do is switch sides, for a decent payday for them.

  4. I saw this just this morning, after I had bought some shares of Chesapeake Energy.  The stock price dropped some but then recovered later.  Per an article in Barron's, the pause in permitting won't affect any projects that were going to come on line before 2027, and in fact could help local LNG players such as Cheniere.

"Some analysts think that a plant delay could help some of the existing players in the industry. One of those is

, which built the first U.S. LNG export facility and whose market share was threatened by an influx of competitors. “Current projects and operations are also not impacted, which means regulation could have the impact of slowing competitor supply growth in a period where Cheniere’s marketing arm could benefit from wider margins,” wrote Citi analyst Spiro Dounis."

It is not different rules by profession although there are several laws based on profession.

It is a reasonable belief of a person in that position.

    Look at Brandon Lee’s death.

There was a real revolver used but it was loaded with dummy rounds. That way when the camera got a close-up shot of the front of the revolver, people would see the cartridges in the gun.

To make the dummy rounds, the armor is removed. The projectile had dumped out the powder and seed the projectile. The rounds had no powder but appeared to be a live rounds when looked at closely on camera. Of course the armorer is to remove the primer also.

    Oops, he forgot!

The actor fired the incorrectly modified dummy round and the primer which wasn’t removed, detonated and was just strong enough to push the projectile a short distance into the barrel.

So in the next scene they removed the dummy rounds and replaced them with blanks which had a powder charge and no projectile. The actor fired the actual blank at Brandon Lee from about 15 feet. The projectile that was stuck in the barrel basically made the blank round equivalent of an actual round and it killed Lee.

There were no convictions in Lee’s death.

You can see where an actor is relying on someone else to properly load and check the firearms and ammo. The actor doesn’t go into a room and start disassembling bullets, pouring out powder and then reseating the rounds. They hire people to do that.

In Lee’s case the actor was supposed to be given a revolver with a blank round in it. It had a blank round all right but because of the previous screw up by the armor, it turned it into a fully functioning firearm by accident and it killed Lee.

You know more about it than I do. It's an interesting case. Out of curiosity I read through the OSHA report dated 2022-04-19, and I think there's several folks that should be charged with negligence.  But still, IMO, Baldwin was handed a gun, and he pointed it at people and pulled the trigger without first checking out the gun. Apparently it wasn't the first time.

    From the report:

    19. On October 21, 2021, Dave Halls handed the 0.45 caliber Colt revolver, loaded with what he assumed were dummy rounds, to Alec Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin aimed the revolver toward Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza and a projectile was fired, striking Ms. Hutchins and Mr. Souza.

    And ...

    g. Bulletin #1: Page 2, “1. Refrain from pointing a firearm at anyone… If it is absolutely necessary to do so on camera, consult the Property Master / or Armorer or other safety representative, such as the First A.D. / Stage Manager. Remember that any object at which you point a firearm could be destroyed.”

(State of New Mexico Environment Department Occupational Health and Safety Bureau 525 Camino de los Marquez, Suite 3 Santa Fe NM 87505 Phone: (505) 476-8700 Fax: (505) 476-8734 Page 9 of 11)

Failure to implement: Lane Luper stated that many camera shots had the firearms pointed and firing at the camera. Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza were injured when a firearm was pointed in their direction, with Hutchins’ injury resulting in death. Rust management representative Dave Halls was present prior to and at the time the firearm discharged a live round, severely injuring two crew members. As Rust’s top-level management safety official, Mr. Halls did not consult with the Property Master or Armorer during or after the firearm was loaded, handed to the actor, and pointed toward crew members in order to determine that pointing the firearm at persons was “absolutely necessary.” h. Bulletin #1: Page 2, “11…firearms are to be loaded just before they are used in a scene.”

Its a completely different culture across the board.  Barrow has caught a lot of heat and owns some of it but its a Nederland ISD issue.  I read a lot about kids playing multiple sports and all that.  It really goes to overall involvement.  PNG encourages a culture where kids are involved at a early age one way or the other.  From students doing broadcast during games, 75 girls in drill team, band, and all the way thru into their athletics.  Nederland needs to take a hard look at why their students are not getting involved.  I might be wrong but I believe if your a cheerleader or drill team at Nederland you are not allowed to participate in spring sports, but I know at PNG they can.  Why does one place have this type of participation in all there organizations and literally across the street their number shrink every year.  One answer culture.  Culture starts with your leaders and there is more than one leader at Nederland who should have to be answering these questions.  Barrow and a lot coaches are going to take the bullet for this and rightfully so but their is still plenty of people from Principal Natalie Gomez to our Superintendent who need to take a hard look at the type of culture they are creating around them.

    1. I don't believe a new AD/HFC will readily change that type of existing culture that you're talking about, re student involvement across the board, etc.  I hope I'm wrong, maybe the new guy will know all about these things.  It could be that he'll just do the best he can with the current HS enrollment, but really focus on the youngsters from middle school on down, I don't know.

    2. After watching 16 live football games and halftimes this season I can say that (IMO) student involvement at ALL of the other high schools that PNG played was pretty low. I wondered at every game what the deal was, with purported enrollments, why the other bands and drill teams, etc, were so small.  Is it lack of money? Lack of tradition? What else? The only other band and drill team that came remotely close I think was Dayton.

    3. After watching a few of this season's playoff games (PNG), my older sisters and brother, who graduated in the 50s and 60s, remarked that everything was still the same, even the last names. The only "new thing" to them, (and to me), was the tomahawk chop thing. That's a lot of long time tradition. There are many schools that have merged over and over, changed mascots, colors, songs, and there's no tradition.

    4. Hopefully the new AD will have the secret, and Nederland athletics and other related activities will come back.

And that has what to do with this case?

I was just thinking out loud, actually.  But relative to him being charged with negligence, I think the DA has a good case against him, and Baldwin is grasping at straws. The fact is, he was the final link in the chain, and it was his responsibility to check the gun before firing it. Never take anyone's word for it, no he-said- she-said, it was his negligence that caused the death, in my way of thinking.

  8. When I was a kid, or maybe a young teen, a friend of my dad's was at our house showing him a new shotgun. When I came in and was handed the gun for a look-see, I asked if the gun was loaded, and my dad replied, "I'm not going to tell you".  When I broke open the gun and checked for myself, (it wasn't loaded, btw), he proceeded to tell me to never ask if a gun is loaded, always check it for yourself.  I've never forgotten that lesson.

ANOTHER DEI/Quota situation?!  Are they hiring maintenance workers based on anything other than competence?

This is the hidden content, please

The article seems to blame Boeing, rather than Delta's maintenance, for issues with a 20-year old airplane. Anyway, yes, I agree that the airline industry is, and has been for the past several years, experiencing problems much more frequently than in the past. It's pretty scary.

  10. Interesting, and clever, but I'll be very surprised if the proposed bill passes as written.  Apparently the bill states that the assessed value is a 90-day offer. I didn't read it through, so I don't know what happens after that.

I'm over 65 so my rate is now frozen, but not my home's value. And the value increased by 10% each year for 3 years after I turned 65. The most that they can raise the value per year (in Texas) is 10%, if I understand it right. Last year the value was dropped, essentially, due to the legislation that they passed in Austin last year.

With no data, my assumption is participation is down. This is based on anecdotes from Nederland people who at least claim to be aware of kids who might otherwise be playing who are walking the halls instead. And, it seems to follow that if a program isn’t doing well there’s at least a few who walk away. Participation goes up with success. PNG had at least one key player come back between Joseph’s first and second years. That might just be a coincidence (unrelated to the success in Year 1). Also, just given Nederland’s history of having good players, I assume those people still exist even if they aren’t on the team. The only other explanation would be that Nederland just doesn’t have good players right now, which I refuse to believe, and I strongly suspect a new coach will prove me right.

+1 on all of that, and it's no secret what went on at PNG when Faircloth was let go, it was in the papers, or at PA News IIRC. There were meetings, and at one of the meetings the QB (last season's starting QB) spoke up for Faircloth. A photo of this was in the local papers, so not secret. Several varsity and JV boys either quit football, or else sat out last season with nagging injuries. After last season's success I know of at least 3 players that came back, and all 3 had/have PNG connections, and all 3 were made starters this season. NOTE:  I'm not taking anything from the boys, they are all 3 good athletes, and were productive, although 1 ended up injured for most of the season. There may be more that I'm not aware of, but anyway, that's how it is with coaching changes along with immediate success.

Did #24 keep the football that he recovered on the onside kick??

He kept it until he got to the sideline I think.

My grandson was one of the 5 guys on that OSK, (not #24). He says that they ran that OSK probably 75 times that week.  I was thinking that was probably a little teenage hyperbole going on, but I don't know. They had 4 practices, since it was a Saturday game, and if they ran it, say, 10 or 12 times each day, then that's ~50 times. Anyway, who's counting. That's a nice tribute video.

  13. It's really ironic. The really obvious pass interference was on the previous trip into the red zone, with the same 2 players, #2 and #11, but there was no flag. Also on that same series was when Adams crossed the goal line then got pushed back and the refs wouldn't signal a TD (like they did for SOC's first dubious TD).  Some good replays in these clips.
