I wouldn't feel so bad about losing to Carthage if I were you.

in 2015 Waco LaVega was a straight up BEAST! Carthage played them the next game after yall and was lucky to get the 3 points they did in a 39-3 spank spank by LaVega.

    Carthage was missing 8 starters.
They still would not have beat LV that year. But you can dang sure believe, it would have been a lot better ball game.
This years Dawgs are going to be a scoring machine with 10 starters coming back. The defense will take a few games but they will be big, strong and fast.
I think they have a senior loaded team.
I believe their are 39 seniors on this years team.

If all schools had the talent, resources, and other advantages that Carthage has, then I would agree.   Seven years is a “fair” amount of time to win a title.   Don’t mean a coach should be ran off if he don’t win one though.

Should a coach at Hardin-Jefferson, Orangefield, or Shephard be held to the same expectations as a coach at Carthage, or WO-S?

Surratt is a great coach and has built a dynasty.   But let’s not act like he would duplicate that success at the schools mentioned above.  Sometimes it takes the right coach at the right place to do amazing things.

Surratt and staff would win a state championship at any school mentioned above. He is the best coach in the state of Texas. A master at finding the opposing teams weaknesses.
Carthage has not grown in size in 50 years. Has always had athletes but never won a state championship until coach Surratt got there. 8 state championships and 11 semifinals since 2007. Can you imagine what that staff could do at a school with 3 and 4 deep at every position.
we at Carthage are very Blessed to have coach Surratt.
Thankful we will have him at least 4 more years. His son is an elite QB and will be a freshman this year.
I predict he will be the Dawg starter for 3 years and that class is loaded with size and speed.

Actually you didn't say anything about the coaching.  You were trying to prove why it wasn't about the coaching by saying how massive the population growth was that brought Aledo the athletes!  In your last sentence, you are still giving excuses why a coach wins and why a coach loses and it's not because of the coach!  So, I guess if Faircloth was lucky enough to have got the Carthage job then he, not Surratt, would have won all those State Titles.  I say probably not.  He had 12 years at PNG to prove he could or couldn't.  We know which one it was.  Can't run from ones record of no State Titles!  I say again, if Surratt came to PNG, within my time frame of 7 years PNG would have at least one State Title.  But, with your thought, Surratt would not ever win a State Title at PNG.  Why would I say he would:  Because that's what State Championship-type coaches do.  But, I will grant you this:  there aren't that many of these coaches out there.  I'd say, maybe, 10%.  That's why in 12 years Faircloth couldn't.  That's why in 19 years Nuemann couldn't.  And that's why in 15 years Burnett couldn't.  90% of the coaches can't.  So, that's why it's easy to blame the kids/athletes!

Surratt is unlike any coach in Texas.
He is a master mind at finding your teams weaknesses.
carthage has always had the athletes just needed the best coach in Texas to make them into a consistent machine. 8 state championships and 11 semi finals appearances in 14 years.
Carthage has not grown one bit since I graduated in 1974.
We will have him at least 4 more years because his son will be a freshman and the next great QB and a freshmen team loaded with size and talent.
Surratt and his staff could win anywhere they were at. We have been very blessed that he chose Carthage in 2007.

Before this past season even ended with another semifinal run I think the consensus was that the '22 team would be even better? Ahead of realignment I was going through looking at who would be coming back and got very excited about the receivers, which we bring back 3 of 4 who've combined for 61 career starts between them. That's a huge deal once you consider the fact Myles is coming back to throw it to them too .  .  .  Then I went through the potential o-line and started thinking about playing in December.

Crosby won't be 6A for at least four more years but we're dang sure going to look like it next year. Myles might be the recipient of Cotton-level o-line play, or dare I say even better than what Cotton had. Crosby's potential o-line starters for the '22 season:

*listed sizes are from this past year

    LT - Rashaun Broussard - 6'5" 296lbs

    LG - AJ Johnson - 6'3" 315lbs

    C - Casen McMullen 6'4" 265lbs

    RG - Braxton Bowling 6' 270lbs

    RT - Levi Langley 6'4" 250lbs

Two of the other potential starters are 6'3" 275lbs and 6' 340lbs. If the staff gets these kids to gel early, watch out, Code Red might be looking to win all 16. I haven't noticed anybody that runs the slot-T in D1?

I have only watched Crosby play one time and that was my Carthage Dawgs.
I was impressed with their speed and size on both sides of the ball.
At the 5A level the games are always won at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
It appears Crosby will be very good again in 22.
I think one of the best teams my Dawgs had was the 2019 team.
Our O line averaged 309 pounds.
They dominated the line of scrimmage against LV in the state championship game. The 2020 team dominated both sides of the line of scrimmage.
Crosby is now used to winning deep into the playoffs and know they are good enough to win the state championship.

Taking into account recent realignments up or down, players graduating and players returning, coaching changes, etc. who are the favorites in each classification locally? Who rises, who stays steady, and who falls?  Any new District champs in the making?

Carthage will be a strong contender and should be the favorite.
They return 10 on offense that played in every game. Freshman number 85 played tight end and was honorable mention in district is a super star in the making  he is 6’3 190 and did a great job. 54 at 5’ 11” and 275 lbs is another freshman on the D line with a lot of playing time. Carthage has only played three freshmen prior to this year since coach Surratt has been at Carthage. Cuff should be much improved at QB and bigger, stronger, and seasoned at 6’ 4” 200 pounds. Both running backs, two wide receivers, and four O lineman return.
The Dawgs will have to replace 9 on defense, but two of the best classes moving up are loaded with play makers. We may see several freshmen on the varsity this year because they are the next great class and I do mean great class coming. They blew everyone that played off the map. Surratt was the QB and he is special. He is coach Surratt’s son. They have size and speed just like the 2017 seniors had at their age.

I picked CS in my pickems.  I don’t have a problem with anyone who believes something, but I’ll always point out when someone was wrong when they speak in absolutes and certainties.  If he’d come on here and said “I think… because…” I wouldn’t have called him out.  But he basically said “this will happen, and anyone who thinks differently is dumb.”

Believe me I have eaten so much crow, the farmers will no worries if they have winter crops planted.

Sentiments of Belville and their superior running backs as well.  WOS defense is playing on another level right now. IMO teams will not be able to run 4 quarters on the Mustangs to beat them. I was not impressed with  Carthage defense against CS, who knows why they did not play better but their defense looked average at best to me.

You are 100 percent right about the Dawg D. No body knows why they played that game like they did. All I know is China Spring did what no other team did in two years.
China Spring out played us on both sides of the ball.
This game will determine who plays in the state championship.

WO-S 20 China Spring 17.  I reserve the right to change this before game time as it was originally posted last Wednesday morning at 11:24am....yes I know.  Both teams impressed me last night. I don't follow China Spring that close but know they beat WO-S last year and thumped Carthage like a natural man this calender week. They will be a handful.  But make no mistake this a confident and weekly improving WO-S team, a team Nederland would not recognize. If they clean it up somebody's going to have to play extremely well and get creative to take this bunch down. Gonna stop here on WO-S, don't want to risk looking like some Carthageian scholars look this morning.  I don't know what they're feeling but sick at your stomach won't touch it.  If you're a crow entering the Carthage area you may want to come heeled or risk getting ett.  So for now until I check it out, talk to Cornel and Dan, do a little research and such we'll leave it at 20-17 WO-S.

I have eaten so much crow that the farmers have no worry for third crops.
I had no idea that China Spring was that good, I even watched several of their games where they beat teams by 40 or more and I saw nothing that said they could move the ball on my Dawg D. CS out played us on both sides of the ball. CS o line were big and strong, linebacker 11 and D linemen 55, along with 5,4,2,8 and 15 played a great ball game. WOS or China Spring will be playing Gilmer or Celina for the state championship.
WOS versus China Spring is a toss up.
Both have a team to win it all.
God Bless and good luck next week.

All that history is irrelevant Friday evening, they have to lose at some point and imo that’s a very reasonable score prediction…it could happen man

No it won’t, no team left can or will score 28 points on this Dawg defense. unless the offense gives up 20 in pick sixes or fumbles and their defense scores.

  10. 16 hours ago, Gasilla said:

That first game was a long time ago.

Here is little stat for you people who think CS can score 20 points on this once in a life time defense.
Gilmer number 2 ranked team had minus 17 yards rushing at half time and 22 total for the game. They are averaging 60 points a game. Two teams with minus rushing yards rushing. That’s 10 of the 11 opponents with less than 50 yards rushing.
Crosby is the only team that got close a hundred rushing and that is with 5 Dawg turnovers in the first half with 6 offensive starters out.
The 8 new starters on offense including the QB had a lot of growing pains and have committed a bunch of turnovers. They are now seasoned and last week started looking like the Dawg offense we have come to expect from the Dawgs.
CS is a very good team on both sides of the ball but if our offense don’t turn the ball it will be a Dawg win. 28 to 7 or 14.
This defense is being talked about all over the state by broadcasters and coaches that have seen good defenses.

  11. Jasper defense was eating WOS offense up last night. You can’t expect the defense to keep up a high level attack when the offense can not give them a rest. Jasper had the second best defense in 4A DII behind Carthage but Jasper offense was terrible this year.
It was a great game and congratulations to both teams.
Can’t wait to see how Belleville offense stacks up against WOS defense.
Should be a slobber knocker for sure.

  12. HF played hard and had a great season. Their QB was a load to bring down. He even ran into Kip Lewis on one play and drove him backwards, That does not happen. Kip is one of the top linebackers in the state.
The Dawg D held HF to 5 yards rushing and 120 yards passing.
For those of you on here thinking HF coaches should of done anything different. This Dawg D is one of the best in 4A history. HF played their tails off and I congratulate them on a very good season.

    Let’s get it on!!

Jasper has a very good defense, maybe as good or better than WOS.
But their offense is terrible. When they played Carthage, we kept saying, how could a team have one of the top defenses in 4A DII and have one of the worst offenses.
WOS should be the favorite but I think it will be a low scoring game.

    Here is their record. 9-2

They score a lot of points but give up a lot.I don't know what offense they run.

    Wins

    Fairfield 33-12

    Crockett 47-21

    Palestine 21-18

    Bullard 58-22

    Brownsboro 55-41

    Madisonville 31-28

    Shepherd 54-20

    Center 48-45

    Salado 49-42

    Losses

    Jasper 7-0

    Carthage 14-35

They have a very good QB, he has committed to Colorado.
His dad QB in the NFL for 12 years.
If Belleville is weak in the secondary they better have a pass rush or he will pick you apart.
They have two very good receivers, one is his little brother. The little brother is really good on defense, he will hit you.

We take away the last 5 minutes of the 2nd quarter and its a one score ball game.   If we dont put the 2nd string secondary in against silsbee in the last 7 minutes, we beat silsbee.

We may not win Thursday but cart is going to have their hands full.

    Praying for an upset!

Gatesville had a total of 20 yards rushing and 40 yards passing against the Dawg defense.
Looking forward to a good ball game.

Yeah, I guess for everything except the slot-t? Y’all keep middle school records out there? Prieto’s son plays qb for one of our middle school teams and we were smashing people 64-0 with running clocks but I bet if UT offers him $300k he’s gone? Couldn’t tel you the first thing about s record either. Maybe Surratt is a different type guy and prefers his kid to play against a lower level of competition than what he could have while he was living on the water in Lake Travis?

If Surratt stays until his son is gone he’ll be almost 60. Bye the way, it’s a lot easier to “adjust” when you have the most talent in the class. Ask Tom Westerberg.

If you had a chance to coach your kid in a Texas high school state championship at cowboy stadium, you going to tell me you would pass that up. I call BS on that. Surratt has had many offers at the college level for big money but turned them all down.
He is I believe the 2nd highest paid coach at the high school level. Some things mean more than money.
After his son graduates his phone will be ringing off the wall.

  17. 24 minutes ago, Cougar14.2 said:

They’re giving up about 10ppg this year and gave up less than that last year. I didn’t feel like going all the way back through but in the recent title years it looks like they only gave up 20ppg twice. Colleges don’t hire you to come run a pro-style offense. If that was the case Gary Joseph, who runs the best pro-style offense in Texas, would’ve been the most sought after guy in high school. You must not watch much high school football if Carthage’s offense is the only one you’ve seen like that, Katy has 9 titles running it. I definitely don’t keep up with them though, haven’t checked a single one of their scores since they played Crosby unless is comes across High School Scoreboard.

They're not winning because of the offensive style, they win because the other schools they play that size have a talent deficiency. Colleges are looking for innovation like Briles and Morris brought, not the guy who’s going to line up in the I formation and hand it off or run play-action. When Texas hired Traylor he was coming off a 950 point season at Gilmer and seen right up there in the mold with Briles and Morris. I’ve never seen a coach turn down a 2.5X pay raise so he could continue to live in East Texas.

You need to dig a little deeper.
Number 2 Gilmer minus 17 yards until 3 rd Quarter. 22 total yards rushing.
    Jasper 56 total yards.
    Rusk minus 8 yards rushing.
    Pleasant Grove 35 yards rushing.
Madisonville minus yards rushing until back ups come in.
The only team that ran the ball was Crosby and that was due to 6 starters out and five turnovers.
There were 7 turnovers in the Rust game.
The Dawg offense have 8 first time starters on varsity including the QB and have made a lot of turnovers deep inside the Dawgs side of the field.
That is reason the Dawg D has given up 10 points a game. If the offense don’t turn the ball over. No one scores on this Dawg defense.

Why, there are 30 coordinators in the power 5 conferences who are more qualified? See the job Aranda is doing at Baylor, Smart at Georgia and Tucker in Michigan State. Everybody isn't Art Briles, most are Todd Dodge and a few are Chad Morris. Briles, Traylor and Morris were offensive wizards at the high school level. Surratt is more like Gary Joseph and Joey McGuire where defense was the main basis for their success. Patterson was a defense first guy and just got fired.

Surratt is the offensive genius at Carthage, Preston is the defensive genius at Carthage. No matter what defense you throw at Surratt, he will adjust and pick you apart.
Surratt is staying at Carthage at least until his son which is setting records as the eighth grade QB. They are undefeated and beating the paints off everyone they have played. He through five TDS in his last game.
The 8th and 9th grades are loaded with talent.

Correct. We would still like the opportunity to change those numbers for your 2021 all time defense.

We got an all time RB and an OL that can make holes.

No body has been able to run or pass on this defense except Crosby but we had five turnovers in that game and missing 6 starters.
WOS versus Carthage would be a great game if they meet. If they do, WOS will have to pass to beat the Dawgs because no one will run on the Dawgs unless the Dawgs commits turnovers. The sad thing is 90 percent of the turnovers were unforced.
Hopefully that can be fixed before the playoffs begin.
