Who's blaming kids?  It's not the kids' fault when they just smaller, weaker, or slower than state championship caliber athletes.  Now.. a coach can help/motivate them to get bigger, stronger, and faster.  Possibly more so than any other coach.  And some coaches will give those kids a better chance to win than many other coaches.  But sometimes it's not enough.  That's not kid blaming.  That's reality.  There's not a 5'6, 145 kid in the world that realistically blames their old coach that they didn't get into the NFL.

But you.. you're saying that an "elite coach" can win a title with a team full of average to below average kids.

You're the dodo bird in this argument.

Surratt had the talent of hiring coaches.
His staff starting from the junior high to high school started teaching kids how to play disciplined football, how to lift weights, film study, pride of the C an how to play a very physical type of football. He said his self, Carthage had good athletes but were not physical.
By the time you get to the junior varsity, you are playing hard nose physical football. Every little kid in Carthage wants to be a Carthage Dawg.
No matter if they have to wait until they are seniors for a starting position.
If you look back at every state championship team, see how many played FBS football (major DI college ball) you won’t find but a small number.
You will find a whole bunch they landed at smaller colleges. The point is the coaching staff developed those kids and made them the best they could be.
Carthage has had some of the best high school quarterbacks in Texas but only two played DI football Boggie went to USAT and one is at Tulane now. It is all about the program at Carthage.
Surratt, Preston, and all the other coaches beat with one heart beat and by the time the players get to the varsity, they have the same heart beat.

So with my previous post taken in my mind, I’ll say a good coach treats the kids well and consistently accomplishes what should be accomplished based on the level of talent he has, and other factors (such as being in the same region as Carthage).  A great coach is able to accomplish more than what should be expected with the level of players he has year in and year out.  That doesn’t have to be trips to state.  If his community doesn’t produce a lot of size and athletes, and have a history of going 1-9 and 2-8 every year, but he’s able to squeak into the playoffs most years, and even win a playoff game or two some years, that could be a great coach.  It’s really situational.  A good coach could probably win a state championship at Carthage with the talent they have now and the program that surratt has built.  But there are plenty of programs where a great coach could spend his entire career at and never make it to the regional finals.

Carthage never won a state championship until Coach Surratt got there. He hired all new coaches except one. Coach Surratt will go down as one of the best coaches in Texas high school football history. We Dawg fans are blessed to have him. All his coaching staff would make great head coaches after learning from him.

  3. Coach Surratt voted coach of the year nation wide for cities or towns with 10 thousand and under population.
Connor Cuff voted player of the year in same category. The Dawgs ranked number 1 in the nation in the same category.
Cuff finished the year with over 4 thousand yards passing, 52 touchdown passes with only 4 INT’S and 1 rushing touchdown.
He never played in the fourth quarter until the third round game of the playoffs. 8 regular season games, he didn’t play in the second half. When did come in it was for one series in the third quarter. Pretty good for a DI baseball player.
China Spring also made the top ten.

Please produce the data that shows "90%" prefer AT&T. The number of teams in Houston alone is greater than 10%. Every team south of Austin and in SE Texas would prefer the Alamodome or NRG.

You need to run a pole on this site and then run a pole on all the other sites.
You will see AT&T preferred by a large margin. attendance at NRG was way down compared to AT&T, that alone should give you an answer.

I don’t like all the state games being at one place. I know I’m probably in the minority in this situation and it’s great for the fans of high school football (not necessarily the fans of the two teams playing), but way too often the travel difference for the two teams it too big of a gap. I liked it when the two coaches decided. I think if each game was more central to the two teams playing more fans from those teams would be attending. I might be wrong, but that’s my belief.

Weather, weather, weather is why no one likes different locations. AT&T gives every team a chance. No wind, rain, or cold. Home field advantage would make sense IF the teams played all their home games there. The one time it was played at NRG, attendance was way down.
90 percent of the teams that make it to the championship prefer AT&T.

San Antonio would be great.  Indoor facility with plenty of places to stay.

Look at the last 5-10 years and the participants of the state title games.   Outside of Westlake, and the smaller classes, there won’t really be a home field advantage, like Dallas is.

It’s a shame the Austin area don’t have an indoor facility.   Would be great location, like the rest of the sports.

No real Texan wants to drive into that woke California traffic night mare.

  7. Absolutely no.
AT&T is heads and above the best stadium to hold the state championship.
    Houston traffic sucks.
San Antonio traffic and stadium sucks.
Austin, who the heck wants to drive into that woke California invested piece of crap.
Every kid in Texas wants to play in Cowboys Stadium with the big screen.

  8. The best defense and offense in all of 4A

took the field yesterday at AT&T.
Both sides of the ball completely dominated that game. The defense for the 12 th time this year did not allow a single point at the half and 5 th shut out.
The Dawgs started 6 sophomores and 1 freshman. The Dawgs return all four running backs, all but one O linemen, and two receivers. Coach Surratt’s son as a Freshmen threw 46 touchdowns in 9 games, moved up to varsity and threw two touchdowns in the first two playoff games with the starters. Dawgs will be set at QB for the next three years along with the phenomenal freshman running back KJ Edwards (just received his first offer from Texas Tech) on Friday.
All three sophomore defensive linemen return along with sophomore 6ft 2in 220 lb linebacker.
The Dawgs running backs Matlock, Dowden, and bechum could all start for any High School, they are big, strong, fast, and can catch passes.
O line will be bigger, stronger, and quicker off the ball.
Could be another great year coming for the Dawgs.

Carthage should only have one that prolly will not be able to play they held out or gave very little playing time to a few last week to let them get closer to 100% for this game

Our left guard 320 pound Johnny Lewis Will probably be out. He is a big time O line. He will run you over on running plays or pancake you on pass plays. He only played one series last week. He was limping pretty bad last week. You never know he may can go.

Hatten (Oregon State) wide receiver did not play last week but was suited out and wanted to go in but was held out. Word is he will be ready to go for this week.
Dowden only played the last two series and scored the tying and winning touchdowns, he will be good to go this week.

you can bet your rear end you will not see the Dawgs turn the ball over 4 times this week.
After last weeks performance, you will see a fired up and determined Dawg team take the field this week.

I've seen very good hsfb players that never received a D1 scholarship. The kid is very talented without question. But is one of the best WRs on the schedule?

I don’t know but if Nick Sabin comes to your house. You are one of the best receivers in the country.
    He has what 35 offers.

  11. 3 hours ago, aledoalumni said:

Let me start of by saying I think the kid is talented, no doubt about that. But I caught some flack saying LV WR #8 wont be in the top 3 WRs that Aledo has faced this year. Having played LV what would yalls assessment be of him.

Nick Sabin was at his house.
Did any of those other players receive a visit from the Alabama head coach.

  12. Gilmers defense was way better than I thought they were. Gilmer played their butts off.
The Dawgs D held the 11th team out of 13 to zero points at half time and 7 points for the game. The Dawg starters have held 13 opponents to 27 points in 13 games, that is 2.0 points a game.
The Dawg offense was a little off tonight, but that could be attributed to the Gilmer defense.
The Dawg D has 4 sophomores on defense and two sophomores on the offensive line. That alone is amazing because they are very big and talented.

I don't think nobody is talking about 5A-D1 it's 5A-D2 my man... Clearly Carthage would get murder (by certain teams that are still playing now in 5A-D1) but if you put them in 5A-D2 then you're talking about a whole different thing here.  The Bulldogs are in 4A-D2 right now but outside of the teams that remains in the playoffs you can't say that they ain't the best right now until they actually get knocked off.  I would actually like to see them get knocked off (Carthage beat Coldspring 47-22 in the state championship game) but in my honest opinion Gilmer and Silsbee are the best teams they will see in these playoffs and if they cruise past them in which I think they will then Carthage will come out as state champions once again.  But I ask off you please don't dismiss them as like they can't run through 5A because time and before again they have done it in pre-season games before and would definitely do it in 5A-D2.

Crosby went to the semi finals and Carthage beat them in non district game the same year. They beat them with 9 brand new starters on offense and two offensive linemen missing due to COVID.
    Just saying.

Thing is schools like Liberty Hill and Argyle are pulling from 5A student population numbers now to do what they're doing.

Could Carthage win one game against a 5A? Sure, but that's not the same as running a 5A playoff gauntlet. You're not always gonna be resting your starters after halftime. You might be in a dog fight every game after round 1. They'd either get worn down or somebody would eventually get them.

I think a China Springs rematch would be a close ballgame. CS is huge up front. They wouldn't get pushed around.

China Spring would be lucky to score on this Dawg defense.
when you see this D line, linebackers, secondary you will know why.
    Three D linemen 6ft 2 295, 6 ft 275, 6ft 4 265 and all are sophomores.
They will all be playing DI ball

Three outstanding linebackers that fly to the football and have caused many turnovers.
Seconday where each man has at least three interceptions

  15. Here some some stat info you SETX fans.
The starting Dawg Defense has held 8 of the 12 opponents to minus yards rushing in the first half.

They have held 10 of the 12 opponents to zero points in the first half

The starting D have given up 20 points in 12 games, that is 1.6 points a game.
The Dawg offense has averaged 42 points by half time.
Cuff has 43 touchdown passes 3,000 yards with only 3 interceptions. He has never played in the fourth quarter and usually pulled one series in the 3rd quarter. Most of the games he and the starters never played in the second half.
The starting D only played one series in the 3rd quarter in all 12 games.
This could be the best Dawg team of all time, only time will tell.

That guy needs to tell the whole story.
    what a jerk.
it was 54 to 0 in the first half. Carthage pulled all starters in the start of the 3rd quarter. VA kept all starters in the game on both sides of the ball and scored 30 points on 2nd team, 3rd team and freshmen players. VA Never pulled their starters. So Surratt let the freshmen score. If he wants to rant on someone, he needs to point to VA head coach.
Surratt has never run the score on any team. He would rather get his young players playing time. He could have scored a hundred in the 3rd quarter alone.

  17. Crosby has talent no doubt but Longview has been a top 10 team since Moses. I doubt anyone in the state would pick against the Lobos except Crosby fans.
Great game Lobos and good effort Crosby.
East Texas is strong in many divisions this year.
    Longview

    Chapel Hill and Kilgore

    Carthage

    Timpson

i can see a possible 4 state championships

Wow. Give em the trophy now.

I would hold off on giving them the trophy.
There is another defense that held 8 of 10 opponents to minus rushing yards at half time, allowed 2.7 points a game in 10 games. An offense that averages 42 points by half time. The starting defense gave up 27 points in 10 games. The offense and defensive starters have not taken a snap in the fourth quarter.
QB has thrown for 2,503, 35 touchdowns, with 3 interceptions and he only played the first series in the third quarter.
I can’t wait to see Silsbee and the Gobbler’s, we in the East know how good they are.

  19. Carthage Dawg starters on defense held 8 of the 10 teams to minus yards rushing in the first half.  They have allowed 2.7 points per game in ten games. The Dawg offense has averaged 42 points by half time.
The offensive and defensive starters have not played a down in the fourth quarter.
    The Dawg D line are all sophomores 6ft 2” 285, 6ft 275, and 6ft 4 270, and Sophomore linebacker 6ft 2 220

The starting defense has only allowed 27 points in 10 games

QB has thrown for 2,503 yards, 35 touchdowns, with 3 interceptions  in 10 games and has never played a down in the fourth

This years Dawg are really special and fun to watch.

We Dawg fans believe we have the best high school football coach in Texas.
    8 state championships.
More state championships than playoff losses.
SLC was a great program when got there and so was Westlake.
No doubt he is one of the best but the best, I disagree.
Aledo, Celina, Katy, all can claim great coaches with many state championships.

    Carthage 42

    Marshall 0

The Dawg defensive starters have not allowed a single point through 4 ball games. The four teams combined have less than 100 yards of offense in the first half. Carthage has 4 sophomores starting on defense, 3 on the D line and 1 at linebacker. D line goes 285, 275, and 260, Linebacker 6’0” 220. Last night 5A Marshall had 23 yards in the first half.
