  1. just for conversation sake

if playing a neighboring county with this team

You would take 7 cardinals (the 3A district champions) and 2 pirates (the 4A district champions)?
You would take twice as many mustangs as you would bears?
You would take 12 from our two 3A schools and 4 from our two 4A schools?

Gary Stelly does a great job covering high school sports and his opinion carries a good bit of weight due to the fact that he sees probably more of all the schools than many, if not all of us do. Nothing about this process is ever easy and you can bet that no matter who is chosen there will always be some sort of controversy or disagreement. I'd be shocked if anyone thought that any of these teams were chosen in order to purposely leave off anyone or offend a certain group or school. One other thought, just because a school is a higher classification doesn't neccessarily mean they play a better brand of ball or vice versa. That's not anything other than a general statement and not meant as anything other than that, no disrespect to anyone.

  2. Great playoff series between 2 very evenly matched teams. I was very impressed with the pitching staff from Huffman, really like how they work quick. BC pitched well enough to win most games but just never got going offensively, hit a few balls really well but happened to be right at people. I guess that's why they say "Baseball is a beautiful cruel game", sometimes they fall and sometimes they don't. Tip of the cap to Huffman for finding ways to score when they were not hitting well either, found a way to make it happen. Good Luck next round.

To all the BC players, and especially the Seniors, it was a great ride watching you this season and I enjoyed every minute. Proud of the entire program.

  3. Sounds like you didn't like my post.... Just my opinion of what I saw...BC had one hit (a single) after the 2nd inning...The first 2 innings probably 8 or 9 balls "ripped"..... Shugart pitched a great game but he did have 5 walks, which is what I said "he had trouble finding strike zone on a couple of batters"

Not at all, no problem here. Just another version with a few numbers to back it up.

  4. Good ball game.. Looked like BC might run away with it early ( even outs were hard hit balls)
Huffman pitcher settled in and shutdown BC bats from 3rd inning on

Shugart looked good trouble finding strike zone on a few batters , 7th was only inning Huffman
    didn't have a baserunner...

BC had a single in the 4th and a couple of balls hit on the button in the 4th and 6th that were outs. BC had runners on in 4 of 6 innings along with multiple extra base hits. The Huffman pitcher was just as advertised, very good. He found another gear during the middle of the game which was impressive. As far as Shugart goes, he "found the strike zone" enough to get 10 K's on a very good hitting team while allowing only 3 legitimate hits.

  5. Whoa! Hold on just a minute before we put all the blame on Select ball or anything else. One thing nobody has addressed yet is the arm care issue, specifically before and after a kid pitches. This is a huge contributing factor to injuries. The lack of adequate warm up/stretching before most guys pitch along with how they care for their arms when they are done is terribly insufficient. Guys try to do too much too fast to get started and then not nearly enough when they finish or on their off days. You watch most guys, a little 3-5 minutes of stretching then they grab a baseball and start throwing rather than going through an adequate warm up period. Check out a professional pitcher and how long it takes them to get ready to pitch, it will blow your mind. It will also blow your mind to see what these pitchers do when they are done. The amount of running, stretching, icing, and so on is incredible. The off day work outs are often more intense than the actual game day throwing the pitcher goes through. It's basically the same concept as starting your car and going straight to 100 without allowing the car to warm up sufficiently, it causes damage. Now I agree pitch counts are needed and common sense should be applied as to what pitches a young player throws and at what age they begin throwing them, no dispute here. I just think more attention needs to be placed on how these young arms are cared for as well.

Out of curiosity I'd like to know if pitchers in Japan have the same arm issues as guys in the USA? You always hear the stories about guys like "Dice-K" throwing both ends of double header when they were in high school or averaging 125-150 pitches per outing. It would be interesting to know if they have the same sort of problems.

  6. I will agree to an extent .  But every boy on the team last year and this year. were brougt up in select ball clubs and hauled around the usa. every weekend  from the ages of six and seven by their parents until they were on the varsity team at Silsbee.  With that kind of dedication from parents for their kids and for the kids to have that much drive to stay at it for all those years . Sure does make a coaches Job a lot easier.

+1 Nice post. Spent plenty of weekends at the ballpark with several of those talented Silsbee players in that Senior class. They worked hard and deserve all their success.

  7. Tough night for Tarkington, it happens to the best of them. Sometimes you just can't make an out or do anything right to save your life while the other team is firing on all cylinders. The starting pitcher for Tarkington drew a tough assignment after catching the first game and being asked to come back the next night and pitch, really tough to pull off, but he certainly gave it his best shot. BC just got rolling and it was contagious throughout the lineup. Great game by the Cardinals in all phases!

As a side note I'd like to say that everyone I spoke with from Tarkington was extremely nice and very gracious opponents. The coaching staff was very classy after the game as they spoke with BC players and fans alike wishing them good luck in the coming weeks. Some really good folks over there.

  8. What u think rake who pitches game one and who pitches games two and three

I think you go get game 1, so Shugart gets the ball. McFarland has been really good as well so he'd be my guess for game 2. Some combination of Bergeron, Watts, and Mcelduff for game 3 and use Shugart as an emergency closer depending on his pitch count from game 1. Of course that all may change depending on who Tarkington trots out there then all bets are off. Clear as mud!!

  9. BC can't overlook Tarkington or they will find themselves in some trouble. Evans from Tarkington has thrown 2 no hitters this year and is more than capable on the mound. It will be interesting to see how the pitching staffs are matched up against each other. BC wanted the series format so that's a plus for the Cardinals due to their depth on the mound. Looking forward to a good match up.
