What was the difference between then and now in your opinion? Coaching not the same, talent pool not as deep, or the district got a lot tougher?
i look at like this les koenning went 69-27-1 in 9 yrs as a head coach for hamshire he put them on the map in the 70's , however they had him being a head coach , track and field coach , taught all the pe's, taught spanish and drove the bus for $18,000 back in 75 . memorial offers him $2000.00 more dollars to be head coach and help with the athletic department ,thats it !! concentrate on football . needless to say he left went to memorial the next yr and went 12-1 and went to the qtr finals and the rest is history . he is a hall of fame coach with over 200 wins , what if he would have stayed ? with the talent coming up from 76-86 he would have built a dynasty , that competes every year for the district title and go deep into the playoffs . phil danaher 1978-1983 43-22 3 district titles 2 bi district titles , he was just getting warmed up . i never knew the whole story but it was a lot of meddling parents during that time , just let the man coach !!! well he is 2nd all times in wins , has a stadium named after him , they are in the playoffs every year and go deep in the playoffs you dont see losing records there , he built a juggernaunt why not hamshire ??? (you see where im going ?) coach tarver coached 16 yrs at hamshire compiled a 116-58-4 record went to the playoffs 10 of the 16yrs there , he had the most all state players that played for him , he produced a couple of pro ball players , you have have to crown him , pay him , and honor him . no , he leaves goes to bridge city coaches for another 5 years and wins 3 district titles and retires , those titles could have been at hamshire !! you see you have 2 hall of fame coaches and possibly a third that has come through hamshire in the last 36 years, hamshire is suppose to be a power house in 3a possibly like a sealy , png , odessa permiam , dangerfield and a lot of other schools that compete year in and year out , it was always talent between hamshire , winnie , labelle , fannett and cheeks . winning brings money and these guys won on a consistent basis , you gotta pay these people for their works and tell those meddling parents to just get in the stands and cheer . there is no reason why hamshire is suppose to be celler dwellers for 10yrs when you have had all that coaching and great players that come through that school .
Thanks, I appreciate the history lesson. Good people out there and I hope you turn it around. WOS has been very lucky to have Coach Hooks and Coach Thompson for as long as we have. -
No way, Dodge is settin up to retire in the hill country he's not comin back this way!
Just wonder what WOS could have been in the early years had Dodge not transfered.
I have often wondered that as well. Could be a lot of people didn't realize he would have have to WO-S instead of TJ if his dad hadn't been transferred.
Wouldn't have worked out. WO-S was committed to the run. TJ's offense was light years ahead of most high school teams.
Very true.

Get well soon...prayers from WOS

Silsbee vs. Bridge-city predictions
Txdragon replied to Geaux Tigers's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
This is Silsbee's trap game. QB banged up and maybe looking a little ahead in their schedule. Silsbee should win this game easy, but maybe the baby Birds grew up against Buna. BC shouldn't have a chance, but my gut says upset special for no particular reason...BC 22, Silsbee 20. -
isn't Maxpreps based in channelview :o (just joking)

Going with the Bobcats in a close game..26-24 -
Stangs are 8-0 all time vs. Bobcats but last years 17-14 thriller was the closest game by far of the bunch.

I BET silsbee would have shut out the whole district (because they could easily do it ..if they let their 1st team defense in) And have a head to head battle for 1st place in the last district game, and I promise silsbee WILL score and Wos will not rake up as many points as they have against others, Wos should keep focus game at a time instead of dreaming about what the future holds because it only takes one bad game and that's it, your out (playoff talking of course)
I watched LCM play against Silsbee and WOS. It is blasphemy to even compare the two defenses. No way is Silsbee in the same league as WOS.
You may Be Right But we are in a league above LCM. ;) 8) ;D
Since LCM is 4A, there are actually in a league above you. ;D
Not as far as The score board Goes. ;D ;D ;D As a matter of fact Liv. is above LCM. and we took care of them also.
Using that logic, how do you explain the PNG game? All kidding aside should be a great game in a few weeks. Let's hope both teams continue to take care of business and stay injury free.
The Logic is PNG was game 0 We droped a few TD passes . But the biggest thing we came out of that game with is what we needed to work on as a team. and that we did. from there we took on LCM with a win. Then Lumberton with domination. Then took on Livingston with a win. Putting 40 plus points on them all. And if you think Livingston is a bad team keep watching them. I say the logic is we learned from our mistakes. and corrected them. Silsbee is no fly by night team. Now we did have an injury to a vital part of Silsbee's offense hopefully it will not be a lasting one. I believe. The rest of the team will hold off the rest of the district as we did last night until this young man heals properly. And prey for no more injuries. With that said I still think WOS will win . They are a top notch team. But I do not think it will be a shutout. So to answer the thread. Yes someone will score on WOS in this district
Yes, someone will score on WOS in district I agree, it probably will be before Silsbee even plays us. Don't think WOS doesn't respect Silsbee, we do. We expect it to be a close game, just remember we learn from our mistakes as well. Good wins over Livingston and LCM, as far as Lumberton, I think (Sorry L-train fans) they are not in the upper echelon of teams this year. I sincerely hope that Reed is OK and gets back ASAP. Since 2004 we are 5-1 against the Tigers, don't think we have forgotten about that one loss yet. ;D...Good luck and stay injury free.
So is this just in WO-S district because I think I remember NED and even PN-G scored on them. Now don't get me wrong those young men are BAD A** but they can and will be scored on. IMO
Haven't played Nederland this year. PNG did score after a kickoff return to our 11-yard line and right before halftime on the last play of the half after a good drive helped with of a couple of costly penalties (they had 27 yards total offense in second half I believe). Yes, we can be scored on..give me a football team that can't be?

I think Dogs win, but got to give credit to LCM, they are lot better than at first of season. Sezar's speed could be a problem for Dogs..However, Dogs are just too good and too big up front. Dogs 35-17.
of all my years watching mustang football i cant think of no LB at wo-s who picked off a pass and took it 99 yards for a TD this must be a school record.this young man plays 112% each play and one of the best LB in the state in 3a and we all were in shock by his speed going in for the td, maybe van wade can ck this one out
Joe is a great player, great kid (at my age everyone is a kid), and great team leader. He deserves all the accolades and honors he gets.

It is so hard to get a shutout, a player could slip, there could be a tipped ball, a tuba player on the field, or someone perhaps better than we are. Yes, someone will score on us. You always strive for a shutout, but you don't get too disappointed when you don't. All that matters to me is when the game is over, we have more than the other team on the board.
