The best thing about the Super Bowl is that baseball is just around the corner.  Cannot wait.  Banquet on Feb 13th first game on Feb 19th at Vincent Beck......WOO-HOO!!!!!!
How do you think the SLC preseason poll shakes out?

 4. Game time decision, eh? SHSU can not overlook the Cards with these guys in the lineup or not. There's no looking ahead to the Isles. It is this game and right now.
 5. Operation Frisco in full-gear! The partners involved in bringing the Division I title game to Frisco, Texas have started an online ticket pledge to show the NCAA that we want the game here in Texas... Check out the release, go to the Frisco site and make your pledge!
"We believe a ticket pledge initiative is an important piece of our larger strategic plan to show the NCAA the collective benefits of bringing the title game to Frisco," Tom Burnett, commissioner of the Frisco-based Southland Conference, said. "With approximately five weeks left before the final presentation, it's a creative opportunity to show this area's interest in supporting the national championship."
[Hidden Content]
 6.
Just going by what the PA announcer said last night. BTW, what's Sam's largest crowd this year?
I am sure you can ask the PA announcer at Lamar! He seems to be getting good numbers from somewhere...  ::) Looks like our top crowds were 1787 against TXST and 1564 against SFA. The TXST game was the first one back for the students while SFA was prior to the "re-arrival" after the break at semester and as I've said before, unlike Lamar, which relies on the community, SHSU basketball relies more on the students. Figure we'll start topping 2000 pretty soon and if in position for something special at the end, 2500 to 3000 easy, like it was in in 03.
 7.
Last night's attendance of 3,454 is the largest crowd so far this season in all of the SLC.
What's it with Lamar fans and attendance figures? First, the TXST attendance remark which was off by 4-5k and now this? Guess it's to be expected on a board in which non-Lamar SLC talk is not allowed... UCA drew roughly 1,800 more fans last week for a win over Nicholls...
On the night the school retired Scottie Pippen’s jersey in front of a raucous crowd of 5,297, Chappell quietly reached a coaching milestone that has been 15 years in the making.
[Hidden Content]
 8.
TX state only averages about 7000 people and they went to the postseason last year and barely missed it this year! So Lamar is looking pretty good so far!
Can you please let us all know where you got your math education? Games/Attendance 2009: 6/12488 2008: 6/11225 2007: 6/11408 2006: 6/12886 2005: 10/12875 7000 people? Try 4-5k more...
 9.
If they reach 5,000 season tickets sold that wouldn't be too bad.  I was thinking they'll see anywhere between 5K and 10K season tickets, although selling 10K is way too optimistic.  Doesn't McNeese average around 6500 a year?  I think Texas State with their 30K students only sell 2K or 3K season tickets a year.  By SLC standards Lamar will do alright.
I think McNeese sold about 7k-8k in season tickets. They had that barometer on their web site, for some reason I want to say it was closer to 8k than anything. Can not remember what TXST sold. They had the big speedometer on their web site for "The Drive". The number jumped dramatically when the Fields gave their donations for the tickets.
 10.
Sold 901 season tickets today.
So, about 2000 tickets total between the 1,000 bought pre-sale and this bunch? This was a good day for Lamar and the Southland Conference! Hopefully, we'll have more good stories like this from not just the up-starts, but the programs who have been around for some time...

 13.
What would you think of him as an OC at LU, Terror?
Some fans would tell you that the best offensive game plan of the TW Era was when our OC was not on the trip due to a very unfortunate circumstance and TW was calling the plays exclusively... I think TW would make a great offensive coordinator. He installed the offense that made SHSU one of the tops in the league.
 14.
Thanks for info TT.  I bet hiring Whitten would be a long shot but if he did come aboard Woodard would be hiring someone who knows al lot about the other teams in the SLC.
Same site reported that Whitten was in the mix for the OC job at North Texas. Denton Record-Chronicle was trying to chase him down. Whitten is a known commodity around the state and has been an OC for SHSU and Wyoming.
 15. Per Football Scoop - guessing, if true, that Woodard realizes that Mainord was a Whitten assistant at both Tarleton St and SHSU - so this would be a great step in keeping with the same offensive scheme, which is what Woodard wants to do.
Lamar University: Ray Woodard has talked with former Sam Houston State head coach Todd Whitten regarding the offensive coordinator position.
Credit: Scoop
 16.
LU biggest problem is being in the SLC.
Are you saying that it is too difficult to keep up with the SHSUs and SLUs of the world? The Great West would probably take you if that's the case. Didn't LU have a heated rivalry with UT-Pan American back in the American South and Sun Belt days?
 17.
I think for those of us outside of SETX it does appear Lamar is not doing enough to promote football, but I think in the area they are doing a lot to promote it and that's what counts.  The local papers and TV stations do mention football a lot plus I think Coach Woodard and LU have been out in the community drumming up support.
In SETX or outside of SETX - it is important to update an athletic web site. In today's internet and technology age - having a web site full of information and positive press regarding your school speaks a lot to a recruit. Having nothing does not do the student-athletes or programs justice... Do these recruits from out of the market know much about the Beaumont Enterprise or Port Arthur News? No, not really. The first place they go is the school athletic web site. That's really the "front porch" to athletics since it is out there for the whole world to see, just like athletics is the "front porch" to a university.
All that publicity sure did bring the crowds to their football games.  According to the NCAA, SHSU averaged 5,370 per game last year!   :D
About 40 percent lower than most previous years when we were in the 8500-10k range. That had more to do with weather (negatively impacting the walk-up crowd) and the head coaching staff. You know that coachacola, as you are a smart individual based off of previous discussions we have had. Should I really bother presenting facts on this board? Guess I need to keep in mind that this is the lone board in the SLC, in which fans are not open to discussing conference issues and other schools, whose decisions directly impact their own program's ability to succeed at such a "low level"...  ::)
 18.
Sounds like jealousy to me. ;)
What is there to be jealous of...? Considering there nothing as far as news from the school regarding the new upstart program, there is absolutely nothing - LITERALLY - to be jealous of! I guess I could be jealous of the Beaumont Enterprise or Port Arthur News since they seem to be put the Lamar news out there, but SHSU has the official athletic web site, in addition to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube efforts and the Huntsville Item and Houston Chronicle.
 19. Where's the release from the school regarding the $150k donation? Is it on the Lamar.edu web site? Because I do not see it on LamarCardinals.com. Either way, it is not on the LamarCardinals.com web site. Again, more opportunities wasted in promoting the program. I'm really surprised that the university continues to misstep when it comes these marketing and promotion opportunities. From an outsider's perspective, Lamar is really botching the marketing and PR behind the football effort. Bearkat41 and I were discussing this on KatFans.com.
 20.
Roc is being an a-hole in the post game interview. Hofferth deserves better.
Happy 900th game to Hofferth! [Hidden Content]
 21.
My thoughts are only directed at you, TT. Has nothing to do with anything else.
Well, you can continue to be clueless about the rest of the SLC. Let others learn from my posts and information. Not like you care about the SLC anyways since you are probably a Big 12 guy as is...
Everyone knows why you post on this board. ;)
Same reason I post on most every other SLC board. We're all fans of the same conference. We are all sharing information and gathering information and learning about the foes, opponents we'll face in this league.
 22.
We'll discuss Lamar football, not Sam football. ;) SLC talk will arise when Lamar plays a SLC school. TT, you're not fooling anyone. You post only to promote Sam and belittle Lamar, it's very obvious.
Well, we found it. A first! Let's announce to the high heavens, that this is the ONLY board of a Southland football member where SLC football talk is not a year round ordeal. Just see these discussions - NONE of which were started by SHSU fans... UCA: [Hidden Content] McNeese: [Hidden Content] Nicholls: [Hidden Content] Northwestern State: [Hidden Content] Southeastern: [Hidden Content] Stephen F. Austin: [Hidden Content] Texas State: [Hidden Content] A coaching choice is a major decision. When Lamar hired Woodard, everyone around the league was talking about it. I know your opinions do not represent the rest of this board or at least, I hope not. Wouldn't want everyone not seeing the big picture and fail to realize that what other SLC schools do in football have a direct correlation to your program's success. Guess you do not care about your program's success. Thoughts like this probably led to demise of football the last time around and probably will setback your program this go around.
 23.
Terror....thoughts on the hire? So glad you guys didn't land Kim Helton...He sucks. Went through some rough times with him at UH even though we won 1 conf champ and played in the Liberty Bowl vs. Syracuse (Donovan McNabb). Phillips is a good guy. Great offensive mind. But who knows if he was ready to run a program.
Phillips is an offensive guy. Our AD made it pretty clear that he wanted someone who'd return some emphasis to special teams (a SHSU calling card thanks to Fritz in the early 1990s) and knew how to operate a defense. SHSU has been known as an offensive juggernaut for as long as I can remember. When you have some of the QBs we have and other playmakers, but the defense (last 10 in FCS last year) has held the team back, you are not going anywhere.
That's pretty funny that you actually think you are doing us a favor by posting here on this board. Trust me, you wouldn't be missed.
So, are you saying that you do not want to discuss SLC football on this board? Okay... What football would you rather discuss? Golden Triangle HS football? Big 12 football? Mountain West? Division II, since that's what some of you guys play? You let me know. It's your board and since you do not think you have a hand in SLC, we better discuss what football you guys are interested in... Go Beaumont West Brook, eh?
 24.
But does this message board need someone to post who Sam's next coach will be? I don't think so. ::) TT, go away.
AggiesAreWe, is Lamar in the SLC? Or the Big 12? I did not even post the news re: SHSU's new coach on any other board, yet it is part of talk on EVERY football board in this league. From San Marcos to Hammond. From Natchitoches to Lake Charles. If you guys are going to compete in this league, you should learn about the teams you are to compete against. It's called being an educated fan and quite frankly, why I read your board. Unfortunately, as I am learning, most of the fans here do not seem to care about the other schools in the league, let alone the 'focus' of this board...the Lamar Cardinals. If it weren't for me posting other SLC news, you guys would be in the dark. Then again, most of you already are about Lamar based on threads regarding the football stadium, so it'd just be a little consistency in your lives.
 25.
and the what's the relevance of Sam's next football coach to this Lamar board? ::)
Isn't Lamar-Beaumont playing football against Sam next year and the foreseeable future? Or am I getting Lamar-Beaumont mixed up with Lamar-Port Arthur? Hard to tell when you are dealing with all these directional schools, San Marcos, Arlington, Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Port Arthur, San Antonio, etc... Perhaps DickVitale can help me out...
