1.
Who are you asking about?
Sounds like the head coach of Lamar's program. Only one full season as a head coach at a college, albeit a JUCO. And experience at Burton as a head coach, though unclear if it was for two or three years... Woodard came to Lamar after three seasons at Navarro College - the first two as defensive coordinator and the final season as head coach. His 2007 squad went 9-3 and advanced to the conference playoffs for the first time in six seasons. Navarro defeated defending national champion Blinn College on consecutive weeks before rolling past Kilgore - the SWJCFC regular-season champion - on the road 54-28 to earn the school's first bowl bid since the 1990s. Navarro claimed a 24-21 win over Georgia Military in the Pilgrim's Pride Bowl to finish the year ranked fourth in the NJCAA national poll. For his efforts, Woodard was named the SWJCFC Coach of the Year. Navarro ranked third nationally in total offense (444.6 yards per game), fourth in rushing offense (250.5 ypg) and 16th in passing offense (194.2 ypg), while scoring a school-record 428 points for an average of 35.7 per game in 2007. From 2003-05, Woodard served as the head football and track coach at Burton (Texas) High School, with the Panthers winning the district title in track in 2004. He spent two years as the defensive coordinator at Livingston (Texas) HS from 1998-2001 and one season at Trinity HS in 1997-98. Trinity went 7-3 in 1997.
 2. FYI... DL Jacody Coleman, Lamar Congrats Cards! The All-Independent team was dominated by established programs - though Georgia State had four selections. [Hidden Content]
 3. This was from RCS... and posted on ]
Of course the Southland Conference was represented heavily highlighted by head coaches Steve Roccaforte (Lamar), Scott Cross (UT-Arlington), Perry Clark (Corpus), Danny Kaspar (SFA), Doug Davalos (Texas State), and recently hired Jason Hooten (Sam Houston St).  Let it be known that UT-Arlington was the only school in the building with (3) coaches in the building.  Coach Cross and his staff must've been trying to get a commitment on the first day of the live period. Who was the last of the SLC head coaches to leave the building? Steve Roccaforte (Lamar) won by default because there was no way he was about to run out in that rain and risk his Jack Nicholson-esque hair style getting flatlined by the water from heaven above. Who was the only coach from the SWAC in the building? Byron Rimm (Prairie View)
4. SHSU folks always liked Coach Shankles as he really elevated our tennis program to a top three, four program... I'm a bit surprised that he's going to be coaching men's tennis, since he's been a women's coach for the most part of the last decade, including his head coaching tenure at SHSU and a run as a volunteer for North Texas. Good luck to him and the Cards men's team! I can say that since SHSU does not compete in the sport. ;)
 5. FYI - I've put up quite a few updates to my running list of OOC games for SLC schools... If you find any, please share. I think I got Lamar covered. Mostly the guarantee, road games right now for the SLC schools. Hope to find out about some home games...
 6. Question... Is Roc told that he has to raise XXXX amount of money through guarantee games on his schedule? He seems to schedule a few a year. Under Marlin, SHSU scheduled two money games a year and typically tried to get a mid-major home-and-home on the same trip (we've gotten UW-Milwaukee, UC-Irvine and Loyola Marymount that way). I think we play Texas as well this year - around Thanksgiving. I like your schedule this year - some VERY winnable games against "like" opponents from C-USA and SBC.

 8. I wonder where they got that idea?  :o Georgia State was running something similar (since 100 days). It's about time! You guys know I've brought up here and BRI before that Lamar is just not putting the same energy into promoting football as ANY of the upstarts! Guess they finally picked up on the criticism. I started a thread re: the countdown on AGS, so fans can keep track of it. Did the same for Georgia State. Hopefully between that and other Lamar posts, the national FCS community catches wind of your new program, in much the same way others are now that you are publicizing football for the first time!
 9. I do not think any of these schools are going to end up closing. There's too many things at stake. Can you imagine if they shut down Grambling? Wow - can not imagine the heat the state of Louisiana would receive. You may see a few schools reclassify down to Div II - the NCAA actually is anticipating this and is re-working some of their Div II rules. Also, keep in mind that UNO has not been approved for D3 yet, that could come as early as July.
 10. FYI - the head WBB coach at New Orleans (which is still Div I for at least the next two years) is the AD. I believe Tidwell and her are the only two in the country to do dual duties now that La Tech's football coach/AD moved on.
 11.
I'm not from Lamar but Lamar is my hometown school. And Montana is an exception, they have been pushing to move to FBS for years.
Are you sure about that? If Montana wanted to go FBS, they could have by this point. They have explored it numerous times and would rather be the top dog in FCS than some middle of the pack WAC team.
And Texas Southern won't sell 5,000 tickets a game, their stadium is the Dynamos stadium. This stadium is actually Lamar's.
We'll see...
Cranky ain't we. Is it cramps or LU passing up SHSU in baseball.
Baseball is about winning in the postseason... And quite frankly, we're a basketball school at Sam. Thought you guys at UNLV er Lamar were too...??? If you were, perhaps your AD would have fired Roc instead of begging him to resign. Good ole Roc told BT to fire him if he wanted him out and Tubbs was not willing to do so.
 12. The SLC is not the greatest basketball conference by any means, so if you want to be ranked - you better do plenty of damage out of conference...and enter conference with a pretty sterling record with some impressive wins...and then go undefeated in the SLC.
 13.
Keep bringin' em on Texas Terror and hating on the fact that our stadium will immediately be a better facility than yours' at Sam. Sorry bud.
You sure you are from Lamar? Your reading comprehension skills are very comparable to the UNLV fans on this board! Never was talking smack, just showing you the 'elite' FCS facilities.
 14.
Man, this place is going to be an elite FCS facility.
Some of the top facilities... Wash-Griz (Montana) [img][Hidden Content]] Houston Dynamo Stadium (Texas Southern) - in construction [img][Hidden Content]]
 15.
Just thought I would put this here, sebaseball.com has started their weekly release of projections.
They have been doing it for a few weeks now - earlier, we had THREE teams in (SLU, TXST and NWST). SLU and TXST were both #2 seeds at one point as well and in the initial one, SLU was even a #1!
 16.
I say, if LU sweeps Sam, TT can't post on this site for a year. ;D
Well, this group ignores me anyway, so even if I do go away for a year, it will still remain the most ill-informed group of fans in the SLC!  ;D
 17.
What sports are normally shown online? Maybe we will start with Football, but this TV contract suggests otherwise.
The SLC schools that web stream games typically do football, basketball and baseball. I'm not sure how many of those are through videoboard feeds, since so many schools have added videoboard, but that's how it goes, I guess... SHSU has done soccer and softball as well.
 18.
Sounds like a great idea......I wonder why this has just became an option?
One of the local Beaumont stations used to do coverage of hoops...
How many other schools in our conference have TV coverage like this?
Nicholls has their football games aired on tape delay on a local independent station in New Orleans. McNeese has a similar deal - though their games may be live on the Lake Charles station, can not recall. SHSU has their games in several sports, showed on a tape-delay basis on the local TV in Huntsville. Obviously not the market side of Lake Charles or Beaumont. Of course, Lamar is one of the few schools remaining in the league that does not webcast their sporting events - think the only ones who don't nowadays are Nicholls, SLU and Lamar. Local television is nice, but web casts are the bare minimum nowadays for legitimate Div I programs who are not controlled by TV contracts. Live stats and audio were the minimums of three years ago.
 19.
lamar will have all 65 filled this fall.i remember reading woodard say he was saving a few for potential transfers this summer.73 on roster now and should at 100 when summer workouts start.
So is Woodard not needing to sign many players in Feb. '11 since he'll already have a full roster outside of attrition? Surprised he'd fill them all, unless he gave guys the head's up before that he'd cut their dollars back after the first year...
 20. Will Lamar have all 63 scholarships in use during the first year? Wouldn't think so at this point, unless you are going to take scholarships from kids on the current roster and reduce them. So, what are they at? The first schedule should be interesting. Lamar is going to take their lumps in 2010, but pull off a surprising win or two. In 2011, they really need to be ready with SLC play!
 21.
I read it to believe meaning all games that will be aired (outside any ESPN, FSN or SLC games) will be on Fox. Not every single game.
Correct... Lamar v McNeese is a definite addition to the SLC TV Network lineup next year. Figure Lamar will get a bit of love on the SLC Network next year for football... Hope this doesn't keep people from attending Cardinal games...didn't Fox used to have the contract? I recall them doing a few road games for Billy Ball.
 22.
Let's see.  Lamar hired Billy who hired Roc.  Roc known as good recruiter and was at Lamar for three years.  Good move, right thing, you tell me in three to four years.  I personally hope it works for SHSU.
a) I do not think you can call Billy or his team's successful during his most recent run at Lamar b) If they were not successful and Roc was the recruiting coordinator, well... Let's hope in a few years that this is true, that it was the correct move at SHSU. Hooten also has the benefit of having been a Texas college hoops assistant his whole career under two very successful coaches at their respective levels - Reismann and Marlin.
 23. SHSU is presently in the process of doing the exact same thing, you guys may recall I posted such information on these forums... TXST has already completed a similar study, evaluation of their program...
 24.
96 team tourney opens the door to new conferences. Althought I think 2 or 3 new conferences is the most we will see nation wide.
How does it open the door to new conferences? Football still rules the roost and directs the college athletics landscape. If FBS is doing what it is doing with membership restrictions and FCS has done what it has with the playoffs, that will make things play out... Can't imagine NCAA tournament expansion playing a major role in new conferences... And yes, I was wrong on Marlin, but when are you going to admit that you were wrong on so many fronts?
 25. Roc in the mix at Tulane, though not sure that he'd be the 'best move'. Why not Tic Price?
Lamar Coach Steve Roccaforte has expressed interest, according to reports out of Beaumont, Texas. Roccaforte is a former Tulane assistant who has former UNO coach Tic Price as his lead assistant at Lamar.
[Hidden Content]
