  1. ya. In all seriousness. They are worse than last year. Kogut and the Oline is gone..not lookin too good. But who doesnt play better against their cross town rival??

meh...your talkin to a guy who saw lee hang something like 48 points on my rangers in one quarter back when i was in school...Lee is no longer that good, but if anything Sterling played up to par most of my 4 years and got destroyed, minus my freshman year when we won....and that year was prolly more of Sterling finally playing to their ability again that year (99 was frustrating, they shouldve made the playoffs, that team wouldve dominated Sterling last year) and Lee playing a little down...

  2. Go Rangers!

I hope we win but losing to New Caney doesnt provide me with any confidence that this will be a run away from the Rangers...It appears to me (from looking at results, so i could be wrong since I havent seen either team play this year) that Sterling is worse than last year and will have a hard time beating Lee much less putting them away by a large margin....

  3. The 10-0 season, isn't that when they were embarrassed in the first round?  I've never understood Liberty's mentality that being district champions, or especially as you imply, making the playoffs is some kind of great achievement.  Just making the playoffs, in the weak districts they've recently been aligned in doesn't indicate a successful program.

their district titles were when they had both Barber's Hill and a good Huffman team in the district, not that weak district they have had the past several years, though last year it was better than the couple years before...the Barber's Hill teams would go a ways in the playoffs those years i dont remember what Huffman did...Liberty has had some good teams, but even when they had Chambers, White, Bua, etc they lost in the first round...they either ran into Newton, or more recently choked big time...i think the 10-0 year was the year they lost 6 fumbles in their first round game and only lost by a TD or something...for whatever reason come playoff time Liberty has trouble holding on to the ball....one those playoff appearances, the year they actually had their worst team record wise make the playoffs they went a couple deep becasue they didnt fumble the ball in the first round...if the new coach can get them back to where they were and hold on to the ball i think we'd see liberty in the 2nd or 3rd round yearly....not that that is great but its an improvement...

  4. Baytown Lee vs Baytown Sterling

In the 1970s I doubt there was a bigger high school rivalry in this area than "The Game." Both teams dominated district titles during the decade with REL winning in 1970, 76 and 78 and RSS winning loop championships in 1971, 72, 73, 74 and 75 (the Ganders frequently came in second during Sterling's run). Stallworth Stadium was always filled for that one, drawing 22,000-plus in '72 or '73.

Back then the windows of the businesses on one side of Texas Ave. (the main drag through the old downtown) were painted blue for Sterling and maroon for Lee on the other side. Lots of fights broke during the week of the game down at the old Brunson movie theater, the bowling alley and the local hamburger joints between rival students.

What made the rivalry so intense was that both sides knew each other so well. Half the players from three of the (then) four junior highs in the district (Baytown, Horace Mann, Cedar Bayou) seperated into the two high schools which meant that when REL and RSS butted heads you were playing against guys who used to be your buddies. If you played organized sports from an early age in Baytown like I did, you were constantly crossing paths and competing with and against guys from other schools and neighborhoods in the city that would come to a head in the Lee-Sterling game. Familiarity breeds contempt like you would not believe!

I went to Sterling...the rivalry is still there is just isnt as intense since Sterling has been horrible for a long time....you saw a little of it come back here recently and hopefully they will keep playing each other enough (if Lee drops to 4a) to bring it back full scale....it is unfortunate they moved the game to the beginning of district instead of the end, last year Sterling/Lee would have been for a playoff spot and that would have brought the game up a little more....but for a game that has so called fallen from glory they still almost fill Stallworth for it every year....

oh and not debating your number but stallworth only sits 16,500 (w/ the old pressbox i think it was 17,000)...even w/o the fire marshall intervening i dont see how they could get over 22,000 in there unless if they were standing around the fence (this may have been the case, i wasn't alive then to know, but currently they wont allow people to do this at all)....

  5. uh...Baytown Sterling Water Polo both girls and boys...you can say what you want about water polo but they win state championships on a yearly basis...

of course, for those of yall that dont consider Baytown Southeast Texas then this doesn't matter, but for the others then there is no other program that is anywhere near as dominate...might be the most dominate program of any sport at any school in the state....

  6. Looks like Ruben and Smith have both committed to Baylor.

I think Ruben will actually be moved to defense at Baylor from the sounds of it.  I've thought all along that he should be playing defense here.  He could be a dominating presence if you turned him loose on the defensive side with his size, strength and agility.

i hope Ruben and Smith both play like beast for the rest of their high school and now college careers (sic'em bears!)...well maybe they could have one bad game against sterling and i'd be ok w/ that lol....nice to see the Bears getting some hometown boys

  7. why would we want to trade carlos lee? he has had 3 pf his best years of his career in houston and yes he is expensive but we are getting what we pay for w/ him...u get rid of lee then your pretty much turning us back into the team we had w/ bagwell....berkman will be the guy to walk all the time and then who will make other teams pay? pence? he is like biggio w/ more pop, loves those breaking balls away and will most likely be the 4 hitter w/ berkman in the lineup and no Lee...Pence is very good but he has more holes in his swing than Lee in my opinion...

  8. i had always heard that in Baytown Sterling and Memorial were most likely going to stay 5a while Lee dropped...Olin was pushing pretty hard for Lee to stay 5a from what I recall and i figured him leaving was the writing on the wall that Goose Creek Adminstration decided that they werent gonna do what it took to keep them 5a (not that that is a bad thing, just what they decided)...hopefully they can keep the Sterling/Lee game alive....but i wouldnt be surprised if Sterling/Lee stayed 5a this allignment and Lee fell the next one, however i wouldnt be shocked if Lee fell this one too (i think they will be real close obviously)...Sterling is probably going to drop to borderline 5a but considering the growth in Baytown is in the northern part they could actually gain some kids after their inital drop from Memorial opening....

  9. maybe since he was new to the school he decided to give everyone a chance...i dont know if he is kicking out kids with discipline issues now but since he had to deal with all the kids without knowing them previously maybe they all got a clean slate to start out with...that seems reasonable...

if liberty can keep that many kids in the athletic dept then it will eventually reap the benefits...the competition is higher and you get your best athletes in school on the field instead of in the stands or at home...they may not come through this year but eventually they will see progress....now whether or not he can keep the kids coming out is another question that will have to be answered...

  10. i dont know a ton about soccer but the announcers and i read several other so called soccer "experts" say that the reason the USA defended the way they did was that Spain typically wasnt a team that scored on a lot of crosses...they'd rather catch u one on one up the middle and beat you that way...so it seemed to me that we decided we werent going to give them their strength and hope for the best and give them the crosses...one of those well we cant shut them completely down but we can make it to where they have to do somthing they are uncomfortable with things, kinda like guarding kobe bryant ya know...

  11. yah i know what ya mean...we beat USSR in the semis then too as well...however we had gotten creamed by the USSR a month or so before the games and we didnt play spain last month, however we got creamed by brazil last week, so its not exactly in the same order but if we were to play brazil in the finals it'd be almost exactly like it just in different order...lol

they are playing much better now than the first 2 games, hwoever that could be some because we arent playing a man down the whole game...losing bradley is gonna hurt for the finals...

USA just needs to take care of buisness the rest of the year til next summer...we may have just bought us an inside shot to a seed come world cup time...

especially if this team of scrubs we're fielding for the Gold Cup next month can produce a good result...

i noticed that....y are they using basically 2nd stringers for it? they think they all are tired from the confederation cup or something?

  13. OK OK I put this in the Leader for tomorrow.

you should!  this is pretty close for US soccer to what the US hockey team did to Russia back in the day... DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?

if we were to play brazil in the final and beat them then i'd couple that to the miracle on ice being that brazil beat us 3-0 the other day....however, spain is the best team in the world, but today we were better...wow, just wow!

  14. back when my sister and i was in high school we lived in baytown but my mom worked in liberty school district...we had went to school and lived in liberty growing up but both of us had moved to baytown schools...when she entered high school she transfered back and went back to liberty school while living in baytown, the UIL allowed her to play varsity tennis as a freshman in liberty with no problems...i dont know if she had to get a waiver or not but she actually transfered back to baytown for one semester (mom had health problems) and played varsity for them before we actually moved back to liberty and she finished out there....the UIL may have allowed it because my sister actually went to liberty schools for most of her school life except for 7th and 8th grade and she transfered back as soon as my mom got hired into the district, but it never was a problem for us...

the rules read (if the ones posted on here are correct) where the UIL is allowed to grant a lot of lead way, and it also gives them the opportunity to interpret them more strictly for certain sports and not as much for others...that is probably the wrong way to do it but if u have a kid transfer to a school that plays tennis like my sister it doesnt make a big splash, if you have a football player transfering then its likely to draw some attention....

  15. More often than not, an average joe can go out on a basketball court, pick up a ball and be somewhat know what they are doing at the end of the day... I've seen many, MANY people try to do the same on the soccer field, and it doesn't happen... Just an example, and that's not me being biased because I'm a soccer player either...

that could be because your average joe in the usa has some experience with basketball and played a little when younger while the same guy probably never played or thought about playing soccer...if you go give a bunch of brazilian kids a basketball they are gonna drop it on the ground and kick it around....the brazilian average joe would prolly be much better off kicking it around than shooting hoops...just a thought...some of the differences is culture driven...soccer is definitely a difficult sport to master, but i'd argue that the basics of it are just as basic as football or basketball, but if you live in a culture that only plays football and basketball you are a lot better with your hands than your feet while if you live in a country that plays soccer your a lot better with your feet than your hands...you have to develop that coordination either way, it doesnt jsut happen...

  16. i would hope if Lee drops to 4a they would not stop the Sterling/Lee game...that would be a real shame....i thought baytown would never let Lee drop to 4a, but i kinda wonder if Olin leaving wasnt a signal the adminstration in baytown decided they were going to let the drop happen, from what i heard/read Olin was pretty big into keeping them 5a....regardless, most other towns would keep that rivalry alive...i hope baytown decides to continue the game...i would think just from a revenue standpoint it would be worth keeping...

a super school in baytown would be an awesome football team as it would in most towns with more than one 5a high school...however i dont think that'd be best for baytown and its obvious they arent going that direction with the building of the new highschool....when iw as in school there were serious rumors about combining sterling/lee and having one campus be 9th/10th and the other 11th/12th but that idea died and they decided to build the 3rd highschool...you dont have to be a super 5a to be good though, if they can get some good coaches in the baytown schools they would be good (just look at what Olin did at Lee)

  17. i dont have any idea what the Rangers will have...maybe the writing Lee off is cause of the new coach and learning a new system and all....im just happy the Sterling/Lee game is back to being a good game...of course for that to happen sterling had to get better and Lee had to get worse, hopefully they can both improve now and keep the game good but also do something come playoff time...i cant deal with anothe 23 year drought....
