Pay won't change because of assistants and anyone coming in this late gets a pass for a year, then you can bring in others if they want to come. Pay can determine what assistants even want to come.

Pay won’t change because of assistants? What do you mean by that? Barrier is certainly in line for a pay raise if he’s interested in the HD job.

Also, don’t discount the relationship between Barrier and Bird. This might be a situation where they’re interested in working together. I lean “no”, but its possible. Considering this same scenario was attempted when Hodges was hired, Bird may not be interested.

  2. Family reasons may play into it, but Hodges leaving is clearly tied to the drama that ended with the HD principal leaving for Liberty.

I’m curious if Ned Barrier might be interested in this one. His wife was just hired as the principal at HD elem and he has a lot of history in the community. He would be a slam dunk hire and since he’s not the AD at Hardin, it should come with a healthy pay bump. Not to mention, have you seen his soon to be 8th grade son? That boy is going to be special. He’d look good in red and black. The community of HD needs this right now. It’s fractured. The barrier family could begin to repair the damage done recently and being new life to the high school.

I like Bird just fine, but if HD had a shot at Barrier, a proven HC (see Brazos), then they have to take it.

I agree tomcat…young, high energy guy from a highly successful program…also think coming from outside the local area is a plus as well…

There it is. I always knew Warrens issues in Football were tied to the age and energy of their head coaches. That's why I was against the hire of the low energy, old man Kevin Barbay several years ago. I am glad to see they are trying a new model in their hiring processes.

Hearing he's taking a Central Texas AD job. I wonder what BH's approach will be on this hire? They wanted coaches with championships under their belts and as such the last two coaches came to BH with six combined 6A titles(Gage's 2 at Lewisville would be considered 6A now). Over that eleven year span BH has won two district titles and has three playoff wins. Not to mention in the last five years they've compensated the Westerberg family right around $2M.

Does BH back the Brinks truck up to a guy right down I-10 like John Kay at North Shore and pitch the idea that he can be the head football coach and the AD? Does the BH administration finally realize these guys they're hiring with multiple titles also have talent near the top of the class and hire a guy like Jeff Riordan, or do they go down the same route where they pay a bunch of money to a guy near the end of his career just to say they have a championship coach?

I think Westerberg accomplished what he set out to do when he took the BH job. He made a bunch of money in a short span, got his son a head coaching job at Whitehouse and parlayed his time on The Hill into an even better retirement job. So much for great coaches being able to win anywhere.

Now that would be something to see.

The number one issue in Tarkington will be facilities!!!!  The admin and community have to make sure they have necessary equipment and training facilities. They also need to locate someone who is not looking for a stepping stone job....and support that guy!!!  They have been terrible not trending upward at all....even after dropping.

I got a name for you who loves Tarkington and wants to be there for the long run.....Stan Howard.

I never criticized the COACH, I thought the reason for the hire was football driven. That's all. I could be wrong, but that was my thought based on conversation about the hire. I repeat, I could be wrong, however.  Had one of the other guys had been hired, it would have been more expected. They could have been criticized too, but I certainly had nothing bad to say about  the candidate that got the job.

Either way, it's pretty wild that you are here commenting on the job you were a finalist for, acting like you were not one of the finalists and purporting to have sources on the inside who were informing you of the process. "Sources say the finalists were on campus today for interviews....".......

    It's a bad look brother.

Yes. You have TWO pure basketball guys with head coaching experience, and you hire an assistant from Crosby with no head coaching experience? Its clear what they were after. A football guy.

This is the absolute definition of hating. It's interesting to me, there once was a poster who frequented the basketball board by the name of DickieV. DickieV was a well known basketball coach from the SETX area who was quite vocal about his opinions on many things, but announced his identity and intention to leave the board after being hired as an assistant at a West Texas college. DickieV hasn't really been heard from since, except for the one time he popped in to criticize Dave Bliss receiving another job in college basketball after the Baylor debacle. DickieV argued that others deserved that second change rather than Bliss, and even pointed out that DickieV had been chosen as coach of the year over Bliss when they both coached in TCAL. After those comments, he vanished again.

Fast forward to now. JayBilas arrives on the board, seemingly out of the blue, with a major interest in the HF coaching position. JayBilas' sentence structure and overall disposition of his posts is almost identical to DickieV. JayBilas even displays his passion toward subject matter that DickieV was passionate about. After reading the list of finalists for the HF job that was posted here, my interest is piqued regarding these two contributors. Who knows, what's really going on.

I'd hate to think that one of the other finalists for the job was on a public message board disparaging the finalist that was awarded the position, especially since all of the criticism is an assumption and has been proven wrong. That would be a tragedy.

A change being made?  Wasn't the boy's basketball coach also the athletic director?

This is the hidden content, please

Looks like the community didn't resonate with the plan to jump out of UIL athletics and their inability to finish the season last year. It will be hard to get anyone decent in there, but maybe a young up and comer who isn't afraid of a challenge can get that ball rolling again.

See, these message boards are designed for cowards to come on here and talk about things they really don’t know and make it public without the repercussions of actually facing that person. And that’s ok, because after all, it’s a part of it, right? What if people could go back in YOUR life and profession and discuss any and everything that they THINK has happened without really KNOWING the facts and tried to make it into a negative light as you were trying to move forward in your career? That would suck, right? Each of these guys have all dealt with different issues during their careers, and the mere fact that these people are still sought after speaks volumes about who they are today as coaches and as people. I think that when guys come on here and say things that are not true or attempt to demean someone in a sarcastic manner, their real name should be revealed. It’s only fair, right?
My point is I know these three guys to be excellent coaches and in turn are actually excellent PEOPLE. Your opinions are one thing, but to attempt to dig up their past as if that’s really going to affect their ability to lead now is just crazy. Kind of makes me wonder if you wish you had the opportunity that they are being afforded and maybe that’s your axe to grind. Have you MET either of them? Try that. Talk to them and see if that won’t change your strong opinion of what they have been through in their careers. Just a suggestion. Good luck to each of them, going forward in their careers.

You know what, you are right. Seriously. Everyone deserves second and sometimes third chances to make things right. I know for dang sure I have gotten them in the past. Thanks for the correction.

I get that, but for some of us coaching football is more than just a job. For a guy that loves football and is an offensive genius, there is no better life than to retire then be rehired to be an offensive coordinator. I'm sure he will have very few, if any classroom duties, and his sole purpose everyday is to come to work, plan practice and prepare to call plays on Friday nights and get paid to di it. All while drawing a full retirement check and a check for his limited work. Not very many better gigs than that for an Old Ball Coach.

    LOLed at that......

And it’s a shame your clueless. The fact of the matter is this makes 2 hires by you and the board that were total bust. Do I need to tell everyone your name. Let it go his reign as a dictator is over. I mean this guy won several state championships with PG in football but when they hired the right AD it took about 1/2 a summer to realize he had to go

    Please tell everyone my name.

One thing that’s going to help is when he assures them things will be very different than what they are used too. I m going to say 50-70 show up for 2 a days if not more.  A simple nice gesture to a kid goes a long ways not your doing that wrong get to the back of the line. I would expect lots of encouragement from this staff something it has lacked for 3 years. You can bet coach will use all his playmakers not just the ones with the same last name.

Oh yeah. Make sure you shower them with encouragement Coach Allen. If you hurt their feelings by pushing them to be better, they will quit, and based on this last post, it will be your fault. I sure hope those kids from Kirbyville get hired by encouraging employers that do not expect them to perform or get gone because they will be in for a rude awakening.

Sounds like you guys need to take a day trip to WOS and see how the winningest program in our area does business. I promise you, there won't be a bunch of coddling going on over there and those kids are some of the most supported in the area by their staff. Correcting and holding kids to a standard isn't a detriment to their development and until you guys figure that out, you'll continue to languish in mediocrity or worse.

    Someone seems bitter towards Silsbee.

I actually wish Silsbee well and actively root for them, as I do any team from SETX making a run. The reality is, there are many Silsbee posters who cannot admit when they just got beat (football or basketball) and make excuses. Sorry for painting with a broad brush, but much like HD55 causes a stigma for other HD posters, those posters cause a stigma for all Silsbee posters.
