  1. Great season Mustangs!  Nothing to hang your head about.  Can’t and will not win them all.

If you ask me, taking a team with 2 returning starters to the state title game is great coaching, and a testament to Coach T and the staff.  Not many people picked them to be this far, and not many coaches could have done the job he did.

This Mustang team wasn’t gonna beat Pleasant Grove today if Tom Landry was coaching them.  Too small!

  2. Super proud of what Newton accomplished, and who they did it against.  Absolutely no doubt who the most dominant team in 3A is..  and next year they might be better.

Such a great moment for Coach Johnston and his family.  It’s awesome that Drew got to play for him, and now coach with him.  For someone who has gone through what he’s gone through, against all the odds, and told he had very little chance to survive... couldn’t have happened to a more deserving and better person.

And I guarantee, Coach Barbay is smiling down from above!  Congrats Newton Eagles!

  3. Manvel on paper wins.  But you can’t count out the heart of a champion.  That’s the main reason I believe WOS will beat Pleasant Grove.

Highland Park won last year, and has won other titles.  They expect to win, and have been there before.  This is unchartered territory for Manvel.

More brilliance. Do you suppose a team could make "uncharacteristic" mistakes when they play superior opposition? Just wondering how you reconcile that every team that ever lost in a State Semi-Final or Final in the history of playoff sports will have made "uncharacteristic" mistakes which contributed to their loss?

Specifically utilizing your expertise and football wisdom, how do you determine which mistake was related to geography and which were due to playing superior opposition? Also, at what mileage bracket does the advantage kick in? >20 miles? >30 miles? >40 miles?

Or does mileage only impact schools in your area or schools that you follow when they lose?

    You tell me?

A 5 hour bus ride vs a 30 minute bus ride?  Who has the advantage?

A  3.5 hour bus ride vs a 1 hour bus ride? Who has the advantage?

A team that plays in a certain NFL stadium 3 or 4 out of 6 playoff games, versus the other that plays there once a year, or may have never played there.  Does that make a difference?

You don’t think you that a team like Katy would have preferred to play at NRG?  Their home away from home..  these are high school kids.  You obviously have forgotten, or don’t have any.  And I highly doubt you’ve ever coached, and dealt with teenagers.

Schools are for teaching.  It would still go on without athletics.  In your response never once talked about the main purpose of schools.

I agree.  Education is the main propose.  But this is also Texas.  The best high school football state in the USA, and a great importance and priority is placed in high school football.  If you don’t like it, jump on the bandwagon of the progressives and try to abolish it.  Until then, football will remain king in Texas, and the ones great at coaching it will be paid a handsome salary.

You can also run for your local school board, or state representative and make all the changes you want.  I just wouldn’t let your platform be known. You WOULD NOT get elected.

    Do teachers make that much?

Always the response.  And never a good one.

Head coaches that are athletic directors are considered administrators.  Same as Principal’s.  Head coaches that are campus directors, or whatever other title they may hold, maybe considered that as well.

They also are in charge of over 200 student athletes at many places, and some places way more.

They are also under massive public scrutiny.  Teachers not so much.

At probably all the schools mentioned in the article, they probably bring in close to 100K $ per home game.  Teachers don’t.

Agree 100%. It is almost certain that the film will reveal that Katy lost the game to the defending State Champions as a result of the mileage gap. Just so you understand, Katy is not 180 miles from San Antonio (about 168) and LT had to drive 92. Like I said, if it was played 30 miles further east (maybe in Seguin or Luling) Katy would have won.

You are also correct that Defending State Champion Highland Park would not be able to beat Manvel except for the advantage of geography. Hopefully, Manvel coaches are studying routes to Arlington and hotel accommodations so that they can even the playing field.

I "don't have a clue about high school football", but thankfully you continue to proliferate your brilliance in this forum giving me hope for the future.

Regardless of your smart aleck quips, you have no clue about TXHSFB.  You’ve shown that over and over.  You attempt comedy to cover up ignorance.

Manvel’s 5 hour bus trip is no big deal.  Hell, it’s as convenient and as simple as HIghland Parks.  Should play no impact whatsoever.

I’ve been to see Katy play dozens of times, and watched on TV several others.  What you saw yesterday was very uncharacteristic of Katy, and no ZERO to do with playing a 2016 state champ.

LT is a fraction as good as they were last year, so them winning anything last year was meaningless in yesterday’s outcome. LT was the better team in SA, and that’s all that matters in 2017, if the game was in  Houston, and the travel was flipped, there woulda been a much different outcome.

And your film study would have shown it, I’m sure of it.

Is it possible to see a Wo-s Manvel or Wo-s Carthage game in a kickoff classic next year.

WOS/Carthage is a good game any year.  Wish they could play this year.  IMO Carthage is the best 4A team this year regardless of division.  But WOS would give them a great game.

And a WOS/Manvel game would end up like the last time WOS lost a game.  They got manhandled by Richmond Foster.  WOS don’t have the depth to beat the better 5A teams anymore.

  9. 12 hours ago, 89falcon said:

No doubt. Defending State Champions would not have been able to win if the game was played 30 miles closer to Katy.

If you think Katy plays that sloppy, inside at NRG, which is basically their 2nd home, you don’t have a clue about high school football.

I’m sure the 180 mile bus ride the morning of the game, played ZERO impact.

And I’m sure we will agree Manvel should beat the mess out of Highland Park.  But Highland Park playing at Grandpa Jerry’s castle nearly every week of the playoffs, and it being home away from home, has to be some sort of advantage...

30 minute ride beats a 5 hour ride, except to you that is.

I'll be doing the same.  As I am on the transplant list, I have to stay within 4 hrs of Memorial Hermann and to go to Arlington is cutting that a LITTLE too close.

So, I'll put the game, put the TV on mute, listen to Bobby, Jon and Donnie on Thursday night, and Gary, John and Allen on Friday afternoon!

Wow!  Prayers and best of luck to you.  Hopefully the Lord meets your needs and you get the phone call soon!

And watching from your own living room ain’t a bad option either.

  11. 7 hours ago, 89falcon said:

Agreed. In keeping with the same logic and being consistent, Celina would have beat WOS in 2015. WOS had home field advantage playing at NRG (according to common forum logic).

Common sense tells you it woulda been a much better game if the QB don’t get hurt 1st series.

And this discussion is silly, and pointless if team A is WAY better than team B.  If University of Georgia plays on the road at Oregon State, home field and travel might not mean as much in the final score.  They were gonna win regardless.  They travel to play USC, a team more evenly matched and the issues of traveling, playing 3 times zones away and everything else may make an impact.

But, it’s hard to talk logic to the south end of a north bound donkey.

I am about half way through contacting every coach in Texas. Looks like coaches in West Texas and the Valley are considering dropping out of UIL due to the unfair nature of games never being played out west or down south. All of the Houston area schools that are still in the playoffs plan to forfeit their corresponding state championship games should they meet a DFW school as they do not want to contend with the "home field advantage".

    Wow!  You really work fast.

Assuming a RGV or El Paso team are ever good good enough to make the state championship, I’m sure the 12 hour drive would have absolutely no impact at all, right?!

  13. 18 hours ago, 89falcon said:

"Home field" definitely matters. It matters when a team gets beat and it was on someone else's field or when the field is geographically closer to their opponents. When a team gets beat on their own field or at a location closer their home the loss is due to some "other" reason.

I have often wondered why El Paso schools do not win State Championships in football? Now as a result of the enlightenment from the group, I have determined that it is because they never play the State Championship Games in El Paso.

Have you finished polling the coaches yet, Skippy?

  14. 4 hours ago, 89falcon said:

We will need to go and perform research on which titles should be nullified due to location prior to AT&T and which ones are legitimate. In an effort to maintain said narrative we will also need to extend our logic to games prior to the State Championship and then on to baseball, basketball, and track.

There are no telling how many illegitimate champions there have been as a result of those static/pre-determined locations creating unfair advantage for teams in Austin, San Antonio as well as the Houston area. It may be that there are little to no championships that have been won based on merit alone once we account for the cumulative advantages.

It is of particular interest that many teams competing for state championships routinely have undefeated road records during the season in which they actually won games at opposing teams home field.

Since you’re so well connected, and a self considered genius, call up all the 5A and 6A coaches and ask them if home field matters.

You seem to be the only one that believes it plays no significant part in high school football.

  15. 1 hour ago, 89falcon said:

Just got off the phone with HC at Allen. He said that he has never heard of East Chambers and he also said that they intend to win the State Championship whether it is played in AT&T, El Paso, Houston, Alaska or Russia.

Did you ask him about travel or home field advantage.

I’m sure he said he’d rather play at NRG, Austin, or El Paso instead of playing in Dallas.

  16. 5 hours ago, 89falcon said:

Got it: "alleged" home field advantage matters when they lose, but does not matter when they win. Cedar Hill speed and athleticism had nothing to do with Katy "mistakes". Teams never commit "uncommon mistakes" when they play better teams.

That’s part of it, sure!  I’m not gonna argue that.

If you don’t believe a 45 minute drive, and sleeping in your bed, having a home cook meal, and going through a normal routine is way better than a 5 hour drive, and nothing but a normal routine, then no need to talk to you.

Playing in your back yard is an advantage regardless if you can see that or not.

4 games into the playoffs only givin up 29 points with 2 shutouts

    Crazy stat!

Things are about to get way tougher though.  Outside of Madisonville, the playoff competition has been suspect.  Both Wimberley and the state title game, the offense will have to play much better, and the special teams.  Can’t give these teams short fields!
