  1. Didn’t realize there were that many former Mustangs on staff. What is their combined years of experience, and knowledge versus Pierce, Dyer, Ramsay, and others that were ran out of town? I mentioned it before, but there’s nothing wrong with a change in scheme. Not sure why anyone would want to move on from the 50 at WOS, but not unheard of. But how good of coaches are the guys that replaced some of these legends and mainstays? How well can they teach these changes? How well they game plan and prepare the kids?
  2. WOS will still win a whole bunch of games. They will still play several rounds deep in the playoffs. They still have quality athletes. Hell, the way the district has been bleeding students the last 2 decades, they could be 3A-D2 one day. They will always be competitive. But…. I don’t feel they will ever be the WOS they use to be. Not unless better decisions, and better hires are made. The further we get away from the DRH and CT era’s, and the impact they had on the program, the more they will decline. How to kill a program? Get rid of any and everyone that had to do with past success, and change the philosophies and schemes that created the success. Coach T was a tough, hard nosed, old school disciplinarian. He was the S&T coordinator. Take that away, and replace him with anyone, and it’s a downgrade. I don’t care what kind of college experience the guy comes from.
  3. What did everyone expect? Hiring Hickman wasn’t necessarily the problem, although it can be debated. The problem was running off excellent, highly experienced assistants, and bringing in guys with much less experience and knowledge. You would think a guy in his 1st job would want to surround himself with as much knowledge and guys that have been there, done that, versus what he brought in. Is there anyone left, at all, that has had anything to do with building the tradition, or carrying the tradition on that WOS has had for so long?
  4. Do you think BISD is willing to make that commitment and spend that kind of money? They won’t and never will. But you are right, they would get their pick of the litter for that pay. Although Barbers Hill has tried this route, and it’s not pay dividends for them. With all the division within Beaumont, and the district, it would take a very special coach, and circumstances for them to be on a North Shore level. The culture there needs a 180, that’s something that don’t happen overnight.
  5. One of the better small school games this week. Interesting matchup. Is the Woodville D line as good as advertised? If so, they should win the game. Orangefield’s stubbornness to attempt to have a passing game will hurt them.
  6. Beaumont has plenty of talent. GPNS is twice as big as either BISD school, so of course they will naturally have more talent in numbers. But North Shore don’t have the talent on a yearly basis as Duncanville or Desoto. But they are much better coached, and play way better as a team. North Shore plays complimentary football as well as any school in Texas. That’s coaching. They don’t win on talent alone.
  7. You have way more faith in BISD administration to hire a guy like Jon Kay to lead the program. They’d pay down and get a guy with a sub .500 record, and recycle every 4 years.
  8. They’ve had a nearly 100% black football team for years and years. They had “favorable” demographics when they weren’t very good. Along came Aymond, and they became good. Under Kay, they are great. The best program in Texas. The demographics on the team didn’t change. If anything, the hispanic population of the school has increased, and has ballooned their school enrollment, but most likely hasn’t aided in football participation. Open enrollment doesn’t hurt, no doubt. But I don’t think it would matter if Beaumont had open enrollment, or only had 1 high school, they are so far behind GPNS in football, whether it be culture, coaching, or talent, that they couldn’t compete.
  9. IMO, it was a horrible idea to move on from the 50 defense. Some of these kids had grandparents play under the same system… think about that. Very few programs in the state can claim that continuity. That’s just my opinion though. But it’s not uncommon for teams to change schemes. How well they can teach the kids, and get them to buy-in is another thing. How well do those coaches coach them up, game plan , and make adjustments? WOS took a big step back, at best, and a monumental step back, at worst. Look at this guys Defensive coordinator resume. It’s safe to safe the jury is still out!
  10. I’m not sure why most of the old staff was let go?! Don’t know if they left on their own, or saw the writing on the wall? Others can answer that. It makes you wonder, and believe that they wanted to completely change, and build the program from scratch. Not sure why that would be necessary, or a good idea. It’s WOS, not a marginal program.
  11. Galena Park isn’t the only school district that has open enrollment, and North Shore isn’t the only school that has favorable demographics to be dominate in football. Give Coach Kay and his staff all the credit. His teams are extremely physical, tough, and very well coached. They are as equally physical on offense as they are on defense. Most schools are not. That program is much better from the Aymond days.
  12. WO-S will be fine this year. They will go 3-4 rounds deep, and most likely roll through district. The fans will walk back off the edge of the cliff, and get a false sense of security. What happens 2 and 3 years down the road, when the Hooks and Thompson influence on the program is further removed, how will the program be? How disciplined and tough will they be? If anyone believes the DC that came over from Westbrook will carry over the same tradition and style of play, while removing the 50 defense, then they will believe anything. Look at the defensive results from those Westbrook teams. I have ZERO faith that this guy will be able implement and teach a new scheme.
  13. Will be an interesting matchup. Talk about a meltdown…. If this new 4-2-5 defense can’t stop the Newton running game, it will get loud in WO. I’m still going with WOS, Newton is young, and WOS should have the horses to win, despite lack of coaching. Curious to see if the new DC can make adjustments and Coach these kids up. You know Newton will throw tons of formations at WOS to see if they can get lined up. This is a game where the 50 defense and CT will be missed the most.
  14. Carthage has always had athletes. Carthage also played in the old 4A (5A now) for a long time. They moved down to a level that better suited their enrollment, got a great coach, and then won a title. 95% of the schools in Texas do not play with the athletes at their respective level that Cathage does. Very few schools have the facilities and resources Carthage does as well. Kudos to Surratt and staff though. It wasn’t always the case. He deserves everything he has got. But let’s not naively and ignorantly say that he could go to any school in the state and win a title in a 7 year period. It’s simply not true.
  15. Good pool of candidates. That’s what I expected with a household name like PNG. Bomar Gene Johnson is a very good coach with college experience Flanigan Freytag is a guy that’s had succes although at a smaller school Cody Gambill Good Luck to PNG. Lots to be excited about. Hopefully Coach Joseph is given a chance and people leave him alone.
  16. I don’t get that vibe at all. When has he ever been ran off from anywhere? He was at Kirbyville for over a decade, and I bet they would take him back tomorrow, if they could. He spent several years at Ennis. Jack can be a little abrasive. His way or the highway, but I don’t get “arrogant’.
  17. Didn’t know Gibbs was still coaching. He’s a good DC. I remember his days with Thomas Brooks at Ozen.
  18. Interesting…. He will do well there. I’m surprised he’s leaving Cuero after 2 years. But, Marshall is closer to Arkansas, where he still has family, and much closer to both his sons in Garrison and the DFW area. Not to mention a healthy pay raise.
  19. I agree Surratt is one of the top coaches in Texas, but he wouldn’t win a state title at any of those schools. Wouldn’t be close. Carthage, was always much like Jasper. A sleeping giant, loaded with athletes, and kids with size. Carthage had good teams in the last, but nothing like what he’s been able to put together in the last 14 years. Surratt brought structure, discipline, belief, along with a great staff and the X’s and O’s. He has built a program. BUT, you still have to have the players. When you bring what Surratt brings, along with the talent Carthage has always had, then you can create what he has created.
  20. Congrats to Coach Joseph. I hope he can find the success his grandfather and father have had. Coaching is in his DNA for sure. And he’s a defensive coach, like his dad. Hopefully he can change the culture and mindset at PNG into a defensive one. Won’t be an easy task.
  21. If all schools had the talent, resources, and other advantages that Carthage has, then I would agree. Seven years is a “fair” amount of time to win a title. Don’t mean a coach should be ran off if he don’t win one though. Should a coach at Hardin-Jefferson, Orangefield, or Shephard be held to the same expectations as a coach at Carthage, or WO-S? Surratt is a great coach and has built a dynasty. But let’s not act like he would duplicate that success at the schools mentioned above. Sometimes it takes the right coach at the right place to do amazing things.
  22. Ok as in what? But I agree about Ennis. Great program with good athletes. Kirbyville hadn’t been to the state playoffs since 1988. In 2002, his 3rd year there, he had them in the playoffs, and only missed the playoffs 1 time after that. He took them to 2 state title games, and several other 3rd and 4th round appearances. Something Kirbyville hasn’t seen since. He turned West Sabine into a respectable program. He recently took Cuero to the semifinals. The only place he struggled was Copperas Cove, and Nick Saban wouldn’t win at Copperas Cove.
  23. You are so delusional and unrealistic, it’s damn near impossible to have a conversation with you. Only 1 team in a division wins it every year. At the start of the year, each division has around 5-8 teams that have a realistic chance. Sometimes making the 3rd round, or state quarterfinals with the talent you are coaching is in itself a great feat. if you think any coach is gonna go to PNG, and beat the current talent Crosby has had, or a program like Aledo, you don’t know the game of football. Dodge didn’t win state at Marble Falls, or Cameron Yoe. Didn’t even get close. Why is that? Surratt isn’t going to Hamshire-Fannett and going to win state, why is that? When I go to watch a high school football game, I usually try to stand along a fence by the track to avoid ppl like you in the stands. Don’t have a clue, but boy, you have all the answers from row 32, seat C.
