  1. Sleeping in your own bed, going through a normal routine, and playing in your back yard is a huge advantage at any level, but more so high school. High school kids aren’t use to long bus rides, hotel rooms, and such. Its common sense.
  2. The DFW area was ahead of the rest of the state putting money into their facilities, salaries and coaching. The area also has most of the mega high schools in the state, and had larger pools to draw talent. ET, Allen, the Plano schools and several others have well over 3,500 students. The Houston and Austin area, while now have huge high schools, have not had as many...other than The Woodlands and GPNS. The other areas in the state have caught up to the DFW area, IMO, because they realized they were way behind. However, once these teams get to the state championship, it’s no doubt an advantage to have the games in your back yard.
  3. Wimberley will be physical. Part of the reason they beat WOS the last time they played was because they were more physical. They looked pretty good on some of the highlights I’ve seen, but that’s just highlights. i doubt they’ve seen the speed and athletic ability that WOS has though. Should be a very competitive and interesting game either way.
  4. Wasn’t that the Earl Thomas and Deion Beasley team?
  5. Should be a great game. I figured it would be Cuero this round, surprised Wimberley won. WOS owes Wimberley, after the Texans knocked WOS out this round about 10 years ago.
  6. Talent is nothing new for Newton, but having this many, and this many possible highly rated players is somewhat new. i played against Andre Horn and a Chris Brooks and they were both D1 talent in 1996. David Walker, Tim Kennebrew, and the big time safety hey had in 98 also come to mind. And the most infamous player they had, for Orangefield guys anyway, was Anthony Byerly! He single handedly destroyed Orangefield’s state title hopes in 1981 by himself, then went to Texas!
  7. No one wanted to play Kelly when Coach Eskew was there in the 90’s! He always had a very good ball team. How times have changed. Hope Coach Smith can turn it around.
  8. That’s what a good brothers suppose to say. Only 11 years old at the time, I was at every game they played in 89. On the sidelines for some of them. Like I mentioned, that A&M consolidated team was for real, and was led by an amazing QB much like your brother and only scored 31. The 2017 version would get beat down badly!
  9. And the 1989 A&M Consolidated team that beat them was pretty phenomenal as well.
  10. The had big ol Whitehead that would maul anyone today, and also had an all American kicker. Robertson would have also thrived throwing the ball in this modern day offense.
  11. Watched Brown and Barlow play as 8th graders. Not familiar with Sylvester, but the other 2 will be as good as anyone to ever come through Newton. Brown is special. A well deserved congrats to all 3.
  12. No doubt. Nothing wrong with the wing T. I coached with Alvarez for 2 years in Kirbyville. I believe in it for sure. But back to the thread.. why would someone with RJ’s skill set want to be in the slot T, if he wanted to transfer? I know it was all said in jest, to begin with.
  13. Name a high school kid who doesn’t dream and strive for that?
  14. Coach Alvarez isn’t afraid to throw the ball and keep a defense honest. Many coaches who run the wing/slot are too stubborn to do that.
  15. I agree. WOS always believe they will win. If they played Katy, they’d expect to beat them too.
  16. It’s getting him a 4 year ride to University of Texas. i’d say throwing the ball 20 times a game, versus 20 times a year helps a QB accomplish that.
  17. And I admit that I hope that I’m dead wrong about it. I’d love to see a 3 peat. Just don’t think it’ll happen this year.
  18. This WO team is not on the level of the last 2 years, I think we all know that. Not as good offensively or defensively. Which is to be expexted. This is where it will catch up to them, this late in the playoffs. Not this round, but a possible Cuero and Pleasant Grove matchup. Plus, they are the team to beat, and the team everyone has been aiming for for 3 years. That’s tough as well.
  19. I figured as much, just having fun with the thought myself.
  20. Pretty huge misconception. Katy ISD has like 7 high schools now. And they keep building them. I’m not sure that Katy is even the largest school in the district.
  21. Tenaha won just 4 weeks ago 40-6. Not much will change. Shout out to the Timpson coach though! That guy is a helluva coach. He was at Lovelady 2 years ago when they beat Shelbyville in the quarterfinals and led them to the semifinals. He’s done a great job there.
  22. Haha!! I’m sure the excitement for him to run the slot-T is unbearable!
  23. Yessir! That’s my main concern. Not unsportsmanlike penalties, that’s never been a concern. Newton don’t play like turds, never have. But getting td’s called back and penalties on 3rd down keeping opponents drives alive. Eventually those will catch up with you.
