  1. This is a sports sociology topic.  Yes, it is. Thus, it is political.  Like it or not, when the leading sports sociology text in America promotes Marxism on its 3rd page, all sport topics can turn political. Shut up and go elsewhere is a wonderful tool of the left.  That is exactly what is being done here in asking(or telling) me or others to take it to the political forum.

If politics and sports don't intersect now, someone please tell ESPN.

  2. Thanks for posting this.  My sports sociology classes will all be reading this short article at the beginning of next semester.  Those who want their viewpoints confirmed are often disappointed by either the author of the text or my alternative view of most everything they read in the text.  I may be wrong, but for many of them it is the only time in their lives they have heard 2 sides of an issue and have to, "oh God forbid," actually think. This article pretty much states that very thing about a much larger issue than anything we cover in my course.

  3. Previous poster, so any person that is African American that supports Trump is an Uncle Tom?  That appears to be your stance.  I may be making a false assumption. If I am wrong please correct me.

  4. It will never happen, but simply get rid of state tournament so as not to fight scheduling conflicts for facilities this year.  Push back playoffs by several weeks and let the boys play until the end of July!  If game play can start at some point in April this is doable and most districts could play a full schedule with limited or no 3 game weeks. Playoffs can start in June and let it last 7 weeks.  Finals and semis can meet in a neutral site and play 2 out of 3 in 2 days. Makes administrative duties for the UIL much easier.  Always wish it had been this way to start with.

If graduated seniors can't behave through the summer on a playoff team, boot them off the squad.

This former coach would love baseball for weeks without classroom responsibilities. Plus, AD's and some principals could be angry about "dealing" with baseball during the summer.  Little 7 on 7 over baseball payback for some guys.  Bitter and bitchy, YES I AM! lol

As we sit stuck at home, figured I would try to stir some thoughts on pushing the season's back.  Think on this, push back hoops by 2 weeks and baseball/softball by a month.  Small school coaches sharing athletes have at least some reasons to favor this.

The fairness aspect is a big issue. Not trying to avoid the original question, but the following is about to be lengthy enough.  The UIL's 4A classification itself has issues as it is the classification with the least number of schools (I believe this to be correct).  If I counted correctly, there are 188 football schools in 4A and 202(boys) and 203(girls) basketball schools.  The 188 football programs causes an issue that I am not sure how to deal with.  Unless there was a decision to pull 10 or so schools down from 5A and do the same with a pull up from 3A, the numbers simply leave a mathematical issue before we even discuss logistics.  If the UIL allows the largest school districts to keep all schools from that district in the same athletic district (ex. HISD - District 11 D1), you are left with 180 schools for the 31 remaining districts (whether combined as 1 conference or split into 2).  If one would then make things as equal as possible, you are left with 6 districts with 5 schools and 25 with 6.    This would still leave (if using the split conference method) of 2 regions have 2 districts with 5 teams and 2 with 6 teams.  This still leaves only 6 teams staying home in those regions with 16 still entering the playoffs.

Even with this, there would definitely be even more travel involved than already exists.

There just are not simply enough schools in this classification for it to have an equitable set up and pulling from the others would likely cause problems for those classifications as well.  Maybe, a better answer for this classification is larger districts with some byes in the first round of the playoffs?  However, that starts a whole new argument.  We may all have disagreements with the UIL, but I simply do not envy the task they have with realignment.

Side note: If you look closely there is quite a bit of shifting of schools to different regions from football to basketball to make the basketball alignment more "equal".

    Until another district basketball game!!!

Anti baseball?  Giving people a hard time for fun?  Curious as to why you appear opposed to baseball fans speaking about their excitement if it's not meant in a humorous manner.

  7. Fun fact.  Fannett and Hamshire are in the same class B district in the 1960-1961 school year.    The schools consolidate and are allowed to stay in the same district in the 1961-1962 school year. The following year when realignment takes place HF moves from class B to class AA.  A move of 2 levels!

Imagine the outrage if that were allowed today.

Fun example that comes to mind for me.  Here it goes....Newton and Kirbyville consolidate between 2008 and 2009.  How well would people have responded if Newton and Kirbyville had consolidated between realignments and the UIL simply left them in the district the were both already in?

I realize the schools would not have made a 2 classification jump in 2010.  The example is more about them being allowed to remain in AA for a year before moving when realignment occurs.

  8. Answer as a liberal is beyond accurate if discussing the Professional Pedagogy and Responsibilities(PPR) Exam.  You should try preparing future coaches for that test and have them argue about the answers with you that you disagree with as well.  "Look do you want to be a teacher/coach or argue with me over an exam I didn't create?"   That's just one of my many go to statements when prepping people for it.
