WOS has tradition of winning. The BearE97 is happy with mediocre LCM football because LCM has been WOS little brother. We have a winning record against everyone else in Orange County. I agree LCM could be more competitive. Some years we don’t have the talent that WOS does but we could be a lot better. Few years ago I posted the reason why our HC still is working at LCM is because of the past superintendent. It was said that as long as LCM make a bi district playoff appearance in football the perception would look good. A bi district playoff game imo is nothing to me. 3 to 4 rounds a consistent basis is a good program. I just have more expectations for the staff and kids. Here is a list of reasons LCM struggles:
#1 PARENTS...... we have some participation trophy parents. They don’t support the program and lean to the band program. They don’t motivate their kids to play or send them to camps. Get the  kids in the weight room  And off of video games. I could go on but everyone gets it.

#2  talent. Some years we are up and down. We are not blessed like a power house teamp. But the kids need a taste of winning and get some tradition started. Hit the gym!
#3 Coaching. A topic where everyone you ask has a different opinion. I’ll say this LCM has had good coaches but if the kids don’t believe in the coaches it’s hard to win and buy into the program. Winning coaches are more successful because of this.

I was not at the game, and my friend was. He said the WOS play calling was questionable. ID just assume that WOS was just playing some second string guys. Was BC able to move the ball?

Don’t feel bad.  A lot of us would have lost money betting against it.  19 seniors, 18 starters?  Back to state?  Get the heck outta here.  Oh wait...
I don’t deny WOS has some great athletes, but they are not even a large school anymore for their classification.  They have lost a ton of kids who moved out (there were a few LCM Bears this year that would have been gangbusters at WOS as well).  What they have is one of the greatest defensive minds this state has ever seen and parents who trust the coaches to do their jobs.  They outwork and outprepare virtually everyone (again coaching), and believe it or not millennials, that is still a recipe for success.
And while Coach T couldn’t go to High Island and win state or send a kid to Saban or the Seahawks, what he could do is make almost any team, anywhere better.  And there are a lot of schools (one or two even in this area) that have very good programs that he would push to the next level IMO (I.e., state).  Lucky for the Mustang faithful, Coach T learned home is where the heart is and will retire one day as yet another Texas High School coaching legend from the fruit city...

fundamentals are taught dailey at WOS -- the only time I have ever seen Wos come out of the dressing room without pads on is picture day -- as soon as the pics are done  they go back inside and put their pads on for practice -- they are full pads on Thursdays - when most people do walk thrus -- They come out on Friday nite in full pads for warm-up - its the little things like that T has installed in them that matters - if you take care of the little things -- BIG things happen

I agree with a lot of this, but not all. WOS doesn’t just “have” athletes. They are molded and trained through years of participating in fantastic offseason programs and good coaching. Having parents that don’t sue the coaches for making Junior do bear crawls is a bonus, too.
I firmly believe that when you lose the years between a good pee wee program and a solid varsity high school program, you can’t get them back.

Gotta have both to get to/win State. WOS always have good athletes, and Thompson has proven to be a great coach and run a good program.
Former Allen coach with multiple 6A titles missed the playoffs with Barbers Hill, even if they made it, didn't have the athletes to make a run a 5A State.
Thompson could move over to Nederland, and wouldn't be in the running for a State Championship.
This question gets beat to death. You are not winning a State Title without at least a very good coach. You are also not winning State, without very good talent. The chicken and the egg have to come at the same time.

Looking forward to an EPIC matchup with the Hawks and Mustangs.
Not coming on to talk smack, too much flying on the Smoaky site.
Just had a feeling that PG would end up at the end of the year playing WOS.
I know one Coach will motivated for his team by more than usual.
Our Boys have never been this far in football, nothing like the Dynasty you have in Orange, but for this one year, they are thrilled for the shot at The Man, and will give you their best.
Here's hoping everyone is healthy to play, and to finish.
    Safe travels, y'all.

That gives PG opponents a winning percentage of .539 and WO-S opponents .583.
If you take out the losses to PG and WO-S out of those records: the opponents records are 95-66 for PG (.590) and 84-47 (.640) for WO-S.
Either way, the argument from the PG crowd that they have played a "tougher schedule" than WO-S fails miserably when a calculator is put to the numbers.

The newness of this experience is causing their fans' heads to swell beyond reason. They would be wise to study their opponent and not assume WO-S is like every other team in front of them. Our fans have been there and experienced a loss before, so we can't take anything for granted. Our players are certainly preparing for them with total focus. It's like bootcamp lockdown for the Mustang team this week. Coach Thompson will not let our players lose focus.

Somebody refresh my memory on the poster who used to tell us WOS was great in SETX but not a state power.  The teams in East Texas were much better programs.  Oh I’m sure he will deny it now and the old site is gone.  But I remember.  And I think he recently has come back around.
But for that guy and the others who would chime in, I got about 40 reasons, a 4th consecutive trip to the finals, and a shot at a 3peat to prove you had zero clue what you were talking about.
    Now finish this Stangs!!!

WHat a team. What a town. What a program. What a great group of kids. WHAT A GREAT SET OF COACHES. Way to go WOS. This Indian is so very proud of you guys.

Congrats WOS and fans. What a fine time to be a Mustang. Were not just talking about a season for WOS Mustangs were talking about a season for the ages. One of the very best seasons in the history of Texas High School football. You guys have had some special players and coaches for years but, this one was one for the ages.

This may be blasphemy to some, but my vote is for the 2016 Mustangs being the best to lace 'em up at WO-S.
First 16-0 team in school history and outscoring opponents 762-69 (59 offensive pts) is insane. That has to be one of the highest scoring differentials ever?
It's impossible to compare eras, but this defense just faced two wildly different offenses in Navarro and Sweetwater, both averaging over 45 ppg and held them both to one collective offensive touchdown.
Don't want to forget about some of WO-S better teams who just ended up running into programs having "all-time" type seasons: 1985, 1995, 1997, 2005, 2012 teams probably deserve mention as well.
My dad used to say that what made the 80s teams so dangerous was that they could win games with offense, defense or special teams...well, this team could score on any play from anywhere on the field in every phase of the game.

Not many highlights for the Longhorns.  We had 2 first downs I believe.  A couple nice kickoff returns; we had quite a few attempts.  A couple good defensive stands.
WO-S speed was over-whelming to say the least.  Mix that in with some good hard running and it was a long night on defense for the Horns.
I was most impressed with the class that was exhibited by both teams.  WO-S did very, very little showboating.  They played with a lot of class and respect for their over-matched opponent.
My Horns gave it what they had and played with good attitudes and sportsmanship.  Wasn't a whole lot of helping each other off the turf, but there wasn't any nasty stuff that you might see sometimes in a lopsided affair.
Our players will look back on this as a learning experience and set their sights on getting better.  This was a rebuilding year for us and it showed.  We lose a few really good seniors, but have a lot of underclassmen who gained valuable experience tonight.
About the only weakness I saw with WO-S is a tendency to over-pursue the ball which leaves the counter and reverse open, but with so much speed what would be a TD or a huge gain against most teams is 8-10 yards against you guys.  That and the inconsistency on the extra points.  Dallas kid can sure boot that ball on kickoffs, why is he not the normal place kicker?
Best of luck to WO-S.  Hope you bring home another trophy to SE Texas.
