I certainly won't argue against any of the teams on this list, all are very deserving. I do think one team that has been overlooked over the years is Houston Stratford team of 1978. They outscored their opponents 532-149 (15 game season), held 9 of their 15 opponents to a touchdown or less (with most of their first team on the sidelines in the fourth quarter when the game was out of hand). In an era when only one team per district made the playoffs, 7 of their 15 wins were against district champions. Defeated 1975 state champion and 1977 state finalist Port Neches Groves in the regular season opener on the road, defeated 1976 state champ SA Churchill in the semi-finals, defeated 1977 state champ Plano in the finals, and defeated 1979 state finalist Houston Memorial in district play. Running back Craig James rushed for 2411 yards (a then Class 5A record), had two other backs rush for over 800 yards and quarterback Mark Gabrisch passed for over 1000 yards. Offense racked up over 7000 yards total that year. James appeared in a super bowl with the Patriots, and lineman Chuck Thomas appeared in two super bowls with the 49'ers. Overall this was a very solid "team" that I feel deserves to be considered for one of the greatest of all time.

I have to admit I am disappointed that the classic was moved to Port Arthur. Also, no offense to Memorial Stadium i have seen games there as well but I have never been to "the Butch" and was planning on making the trip over there that Saturday. I am curious as to why it was moved. Thanks Todd for your efforts in getting all the correct info.

That was the most physical high school game I've ever seen. There probably weren't 100 yards of offense combined that night.

    1. Plano vs Odessa Permian - Plano found a way to win every time. 4-0 in the Semifinals against Mojo.  No other team can compare.
    2. La Marque vs Calallen - Poor Calallen... lost in the Semis to LM six times  but almost every game was a great one.
    3. WOS vs Jasper - #1 vs #2 one year, Quarterfinalists another year, always a good show
    4. Katy vs The Woodlands - The Woodlands had Katy's number and won early on in the season several times but couldn't keep it going
    5. PNG vs Ned - always a classic

I used to talk with Bennie about Texas football back in the 80s. His depth of knowledge and his memories were unparalleled.   I was proud to see his journals in the Texas football exhibit at the Bob Bullock museum few years ago. Bennie was a fine man. RIP Mr. Cotton.

Bennie went to a number of Nederland Bulldog playoff games. I got the chance to talk to Bennie a time of two about High School Football and it was surprising how knowledgeable he was on the subject. He will be missed.

    Bennie Lon Cotton
Bennie Lon Cotton, 83, of Orangefield, passed away on November 17, 2015, at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, November 23, 2015, at Claybar Funeral Home in Bridge City. Burial will follow at Mary Williams Cemetery in Orangefield.

Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 2015 and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sunday, November 22, 2015, at Claybar Funeral Home in Bridge City.

Born in Orange County, Texas, on January 6, 1932, he was the son of Willie Reese Cotton and Violet Garison Cotton. Dad was born on south 105 but lived his entire life in Orangefield, Texas on property that had been in the family since the 1800s.

Dad was a true Texan. Although born in 1932 he was the fifth generation of his family born in Texas and the 8th to live in Texas. The family came here when this was still called Mexico in the late 1820s. They got here as fast as they could and many held Republic of Texas Land Grants. Six great…uncles fought in the Texas Revolutionary Army and his great...aunt was a member of Austin’s Old Three Hundred.

Dad was known all over the state for his love of Texas high school football. Articles were written about him in newspapers from the Dallas Morning News to the Amarillo Globe News and even the Texas Monthly, which called him Texas’ greatest high school football fan. Displays about him and his collection of football memories and artifacts have been displayed in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco, and the state’s Texas History Museum in Austin, Texas. Dad had many great stories to tell and many amazing experiences but the most important reason he was so well respected was his character. Coaches trusted him because he never spoke of another team’s weakness or vulnerability. He sat on many sidelines and in many locker rooms and never betrayed a trust. The last game he saw was just days before his passing between PNG and Dayton at Stallworth Stadium in Baytown. He still followed old friends like Houston Stratford, WOS, Orangefield, Canadian High (Panhandle team), and Odessa Permian.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Cotton; son-in-law, Chuck Tipton; brother, Virgil Lynn Cotton; sister, Stella Faye “Pill” Cotton Hinson and parents, Willie and Violet Cotton.

He is survived by his son, Will “Sarge” Cotton and wife, Jacky of Mauriceville; daughters, Marianne Payne and husband, Glen of Vidor and Suzie Tipton of Orangefield; grandchildren, Christy Swanson and husband, Mike of Mauriceville, Kimberly Wood and husband, Shannon of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Savannah Tipton of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Andrew Tipton of Clovis, New Mexico and great grandchildren, Brett Swanson, Gabrianna Wood and Genevieve Wood.

Serving as pallbearers will be Mark Scales, Wayne Chandler, Gerald Chandler, and Randy Wilson, John Hinson, Tim Hinson, John Garison, and Bryan Jones. Honorary pallbearers are Buster Snelson, David Hinson, and Mike Garrison.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to two charities about which he cared because they feed hungry children: the Southeast Texas Food Bank Backpack Program and the Salvation Army. As a life-long reader and learner, he would also appreciate a history or science book placed in his memory at one of the school libraries at either Orangefield or WOS
