jv_coach got a reaction from AledoBearcatsCO2014 in How the Bible just became more relevant
How the Bible just became more relevant FAITH & INSPIRATION By ANDRÉE SEU PETERSON Posted May 6, 2014, 10:42 a.m.   I read 2 Thessalonians this morning and was astonished at how much the apostle Paul had learned about my life lately.
I say this tongue in cheek, of course, in the spirit in which Mark Twain allegedly quipped, “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years.”
It used to be that my eyes glazed over at the Pauline passages about persecution, like this one:
All this talk about suffering and being afflicted at the hands of some faceless people! All this talk about needing to endure it and wait for Christ! I could not relate. I had to admit that the meanderings of Paul (and Jesus) did not describe me. I had no experience of being harassed or hated for my faith, or of knowing anyone who had. It made those sections of Scripture—and therefore the whole of Scripture, to some extent—a bit alien and abstract for me.
But praise the Lord, see how much the Scriptures have “learned” about our lives in the last few years! Increasingly, our American experience has come to resemble conditions in first century Thessalonica, so that we can finally feel a part of the cloud of witnesses and the suffering saints.
A sampler: The fast-food chain Chick-fil-A is banned in Boston. (When I was a kid, if a movie or a book was “banned in Boston” it was because it was morally filthy, but nowadays a company that is not pro-same-sex marriage is unwelcome in Beantown.) Last week, CNN host Rachel Nichols, latching onto the feeding frenzy of the Donald Sterling affair, dropped the hint that the Orlando Magic’s Rich DeVos should be the next NBA owner to go, for his pro-family views.
An acquaintance recently told me that I should check out a website called â€œRight Wing Watch,” subtitled “A project of People for the American Way dedicated to monitoring and exposing the activities of the right wing movement.” She said my name is mentioned on it. I hardly believed the woman, but I looked and it was true.

In Lakewood, California, a man who sent four golf balls into the lake at the local golf club decided that he wasn’t a gifted golfer. He was so upset at his effort that he threw his golf bag into the lake and stormed off to his car.
Onlookers thought that he had had a change of heart when he went back down to the lake and waded out into the water. He then grabbed the bag, searched the pockets until he found his car keys, returned to his car bag-less, and drove away.
When this sinful world tosses Christianity away because they are offended by it they make the mistake of rejecting the One who said, “I am he that lives, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of Hell and of death” (Revelation 1:18).

Good Friday is almost over and Easter is coming up. It’s a three day weekend for some and a great time to dye and hide eggs, cook, eat candy and spend time with family. Food, bunnies and family are great but don’t forget to honor the real meaning of Easter. Jesus Christ died on the cross for you and me to pay the price for our sins. He rose three days later to conquer death and secure eternal life for all who accept him as their Lord and Savior. Happy Easter!

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.”

What happened to me in my past was real and powerful, but it is not who I am. I’m a Christian—a Christ follower. My past serves redemptive purposes today. Here are a few.
    1. My past was a path to Jesus.
    2. My past is a blessing from the LORD.
    3. My past helps me to relate to strugglers.
    4. My past motivates me to keep changing.
    5. My past encourages me to tell others how they can change.
    6. My past allows me to warn those who won’t change.
    7. My past makes me appreciate the grace of God.
    8. My past gives me a greater hatred for sin.
    9. My past stirs me to long for heaven.
    10. My past fills my soul with the transformative hope found in the Gospel.

I don’t have problem with fictional books or movies as long they’re taken as inspirational fiction and not portrayed as non-fiction. In today’s movie market I actually welcome some of these fictional movies such as God’s Not Dead. I’m not sure about Heaven is For Real.

Here is the problem that I have with the often stated, "If they are old enough" answers.

Because a very limited few people volunteer to take a risk, do you really want to be on the roads with a new crop of 17 year old kids that can now legally drink? It seems that we are trying to lump all people in with a few that are willing and mature enough to serve their country.

The "old enough" arguments really have no bearing on reality of life.

Also for those putting their lives on the line, I believe that once outside of the country, 18 is the minimum wage. A cook in the Air Force that never leaves TX is hardly putting his life on the line. If called to duty overseas, then he can drink at 18 when he actually is "putting his life on the line".

To take the reverse of the very few that are willing to take the risk and therefore "all" 17 or 18 year old people should be able to do whatever, think of this. In TX you can be criminally certified as an adult at 14 years old. Although it is only a limited few people have that happens to (just like joining the military), it is possible for any child so let's just lower all ages to 14. Perhaps we should then end child molesting if the "child" is at least 14 and consents to sex. So if the 35 year old neighbor talks your 14 year old daughter into sex, who cares? A 14 year old can go to prison so no matter how immature, they should be able to consent to anything... right? How about a 15 year old signing a contract? And if they can do all of these things that they have been deemed by some as having earned by age, can the parents legally abandon them at those ages?

The "old enough" argument, while on the face of it seems interesting, opens up a can of worms that a majority of people will think is ludicrous.

i can understand them WANTING to do this for two reasons:

    1. the smoking related healthcare costs for veterans totals over
    a billion dollars a year
    2. Non-smokers make much more fit, in-shape fighters.

That being said, screw them for considering actually acting on it. Our veterans give up large chunks of their lives (if not their life itself) to serve our country and protect our freedoms. And as far as I am concerned, if a man goes out and gets shot at for me and my country, he can smoke (chew, dip) as much as he wants, and we'll just find a way to foot the bill if he gets sick later. With all of the money being wasted by politicians on both sides of the aisle, the expense of veterans' healthcare should be the least of our worries.

Like to hear some thoughts on this. Most ridiculous thing I believe I've heard of  just one more way to lead to the major reduction of volunteer soldiers and further weaken the United States. A man willing to fight and die for mine and the freedoms of the political elite should be able to partake in a legal substance!jmo

    To go a little further;

     Romans 1:32
32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

I also think this can be interpreted as Christians that approve of such practices.

Too much focus is on the homosexual lifestyle. What I (and other Christians) should be concerned with is what God thinks of me supporting or rejecting, being vocal or being silent, being critical or compassionate about homosexuality or any other sinful acts.

Yes, homosexuality is different because we have a political agenda promoting acceptance and lifestyle equality. We are not to be accepting (referring back to Romans 1:32) Nor should we be hostile and insulting.

Wow, just made it from the baseball forum and read the first thread. We are in trouble - but everyone knows that. The bible is the infallible word of God, divinely inspired. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Enter the accurate account of Sodom and Gomorrah, and prepare thy selves for fire and brimstone.
