It would seem logical when you can get just as high quality of an education in a much more desirable facility with up to date security and advanced technology, just a few miles down the road.
I wouldn't want to raise my children in a community that doesn't want to invest in their future.

My entire family in Nederland are voting yes. I have started my own real life survey asking everywhere I go in Nederland. I have had two people say no, two say they were not voting and 26 saying yes. That is not including the family members which number over 10. I see this as a pass. I find it hard to believe that it will fail. Nederland has done a fine job of being transparent, promoting, and following the right avenues to make it happen. Good luck heres to supporting the kids.

I wonder if our "friend" has Air Conditioning in his truck?
    Does he electric door locks?
    Automatic windows?
All of these things were "invented" since the last "new" school was built in Nederland, if I'm not mistaken.

And some people believe that all of the world's problems can be fixed with other peoples' money.  Nothing is stopping you or anybody else from driving down to the admin building and scratching a personal check for however much you believe you can afford.
The funny thing is that if you really felt so "charitable" "benevolent" and "giving" you'd at least be willing to forego your homestead exemption.  But you won't.

No judgement here, I respect everyone's right to their own opinion, choices, views and rights.
Some people are simply benevolent and others are not.
Some people are charitable and others are not.
Some people are giving and others are not.
Some people have a vision (long term) and others do not.
Not saying either group is right or wrong, just categorizing.
I mean some people choose to go the "cheap" route and others choose to go the "quality" route. Some people want the "best" for the kids of Nederland and some people think "adequate" is good enough.
Ultimately this bond is an investment in the future, and a long term solution to the facilities problems in Nederland ISD.
But, those that are opposed are choosing to make it out to be an issue of a Superintendent or a School Board "over spending." Of packing the bond with "frivolous"  luxuries that are unnecessary.
However, it is obvious by Nederland's bond history, it does not matter how small or simple the bond package is, some communities are reluctant or down right defiant to investing in the future generations.
Those people who say, "if it was good enough for me and mine then it is good enough for everybody else," tend to flock together. It is obvious Nederland is one of those places.

The alternative is asking more later. Some people don’t seem to get that when the keep voting down bonds.

A lot of people budget monthly, so saying $30 a month is clearer than saying the yearly price.
You have a buffer in your escrow account that covers things like this.  When you buy a house your lender requires you pay 3-4 months of taxes up front to cover price increases.   You won’t have to pay double the next year.

Well.......in 2009 as part of a $120.3 bond issue, 24.5 million would have gone to extensive renovation of Nederland High, which having been built in 1971 appears to be the youngest of the schools in the Nederland ISD as at the time the average age of a Nederland ISD school was about 50 years old.  Including an elementary that was built in 1938.
This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up The 2009 bond issue was defeated 3252-853.
That renovation cost, should the district have gone that way for this bond issue, would have been, according to Nederland ISD, $38 million, an increase of $17.5 million since the 2009 bond.

So I have read through this and it seems to boil down to this, for those of you just joining and don't want to read all 10 pages.

some people on here don't want new schools, new technology, or athletic facilities, for the students of Nederland because they believe the cost is too much, and/or they shouldn't have to pay because they don't have kids that go to school there any more. They also argue that the facilities were good enough for them why not good enough for the future.

the other group says the bond is over due, facilities are awful, and even illegal in regards to Accessibility for people with Disabilities for the stadium. They argue that classes are outdated, and overcrowded, and that the learning environment doesn't prepare students for the future in the best possible way. This group argues that the students deserve better and that the while it is expensive it will only get more expensive as time goes on.

there 10 pages down to two paragraphs,
    your welcome.

You are wrong. The overall number is not what people need to be looking at when they vote. They need to be looking at how much it is going to cost "them" the individual and what they are willing to sacrifice to benefit the children of Nederland and prepare the students of Nederland ISD for the future. People like you want to put these big numbers out there and scare people into voting no. When in all actuality, the hit to the individual is very small.

As far as the "people without kids having to pay for the education of people with kids" argument -- That complaint just doesn't hold water. The very foundation of taxation involves the government taking money from you to spend it on things that may or may not benefit you directly, but which do benefit you indirectly in the long run. It's not a perfect system and I am 100% for lowering taxes across the board, but every time we pay taxes we are sending our money off to be spent on who knows what -- At least with this bond we know exactly what it will be spent on. And those kids you pay for now are going to be in the workforce in a few years and state, local, and federal taxes will come out of their pockets, and some/many of the benefits from those taxes will go to a bunch of people who either don't work or are two old to work anymore in the form of roads, law enforcement, welfare, etc. Those kids are joining a workforce that is disproportionately small compared to the enormous -- and expensive -- population of retiring Baby Boomers, and they will spend the rest of their lives facing tax increase after tax increase to help provide benefits for, among other things, a bunch of people who may or may not have complained about getting those kids a decent school building and a football field that doesn't look like a water buffalo mating ground. The older generation worked hard and was taxed and those taxes went to things the taxpayers probably didn't want to pay for and in a few years the high school generation will enter that universally unfair system. I say, God Bless Texas -- everyone on this thread already benefits from low state taxes. You can always move to New York and watch the tax collectors destroy your take-home money.

There's no way to accurately know that information until the bonds are actually sold. Realistically, if the bond passes, bonds won't be sold for possibly a year or more. I think it would be irresponsible to try and project an accurate interest rate that far in advance. Even then they will probably be sold in phases so the tax payer potentially may not see an increase for two years and the increase may be in increments. Tax payers will not be hit with an immediate total tax increase.

If you have read an article, why didn't you post a link to the entire article?  Is it because it would reveal ALL that Board President Isom said?
    Well, I will:

This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up Because the full quote on that matter was that, " I’m proud of the kids and how they’ve scored on tests,” she said. “Their grades and knowledge has increased. We have a very good superintendent who pushes teachers. I’m proud of the school district as whole.”
BUT, Mrs. Isom was asked about her position on the bond, "The Nederland Independent School District’s Citizens Advisory Committee met for the final time Wednesday to discuss a presentation to the board for a potential bond issue. Isom said she hopes a bond will pass come May.
“I’ve been through two other bonds that didn’t pass,” she said. “I hope this one will.”
At the final meeting, Isom said she was not sure of the rules about advocating for a potential bond issue, but she has been on record in the past saying she would like a new school facility."

I understand your position about the bond proposal and you are certainly free to express that opposition here.  However, I would hope that in the future, you would avoid the half truth's (Mrs. Isom's views on the state of the district) and outright lies (asserting that the BCISD was having to "cut programs" due to a bond issue that was voted down) that you have attempted to resort to the last few days.

Could have replaced 4 elementary schools and re-done the high school 9 years ago for $30 million less...continuing to wait only increases the price tag...I suppose the idea is to wait until the buildings are ready to fall down before they are replaced
Again, I despise spending money, especially this much, but at some point, you have to realize that what you have is not what you need to carry you forward effectively...at what point did someone decide to replace all of the outhouses with indoor plumbing?  I'm sure that cost money and outhouses worked pretty well up until that point...somebody found a more effective way to do things
