  1. they were putting out a ton of d1 5 or 6 years ago. They had back to back qb's go d1. Also had loads of linebackers and lineman go d1. Even put a beat down on one of the best teams I have seen dayton have. I believe they made it to back to back semis only to get beat by one of the most dominate high school programs Texas has ever had. I guess what I'm saying is friendswood has had their share of talent.

They have, but no where near the type of talent that's in Desoto, Cedar Hill, etc. Imagine Fort Bend Isd...with ALL the talent there....and instead of having to spilt up all the talent to Hightower, Elkins, Bush, and Marshall....you had a mega school like Allen.

Heck...just look at the talent at Hightower,Willowridge and Marshall alone....combine those schools and your enrollment is STILL smaller than Allens

  2. You hit it in the screws. This ISN'T 20 years ago. Lots of the top schools in Houston haven't even been open 10 years, much less 20, which is what people east of the Trinity are missing, especially in the bigger classes.

10 years ago there was no Foster, George Ranch or Ridge Point to play in the second round, ALL of which were ranked in the AP top 10 at some point last year. ALL boast multiple high level FBS recruits just like Dawson and Manvel who are less than a decade old. Humble ISD has added Summer Creek, Kingwood Park, AND Atascosita within the last decade also, same for Katy and Cy-Fair ISD.

DFW football vs everyone else can be summed up like this; Joey McGuire who is Cedar Hill's head coach has turned down multiple college job offers. The most recent of which was reported at $375k to coach at Texas. He chose to keep his job at Cedar Hill making well under half of that in the hood. Same for Claude Mathis at DeSoto before he took a job on Morris' staff at SMU. Crosby probably pays their AD something very similar to those guys but we'll be lucky to keep him 5 more years, even if we win a title or two. That's the current state of football in SETX on the bigger levels.

Teams in VYPE's GHA top 20 that didnt exsist 10 years ago:

    Cy-Ranch

    Manvel

    Dawson

    Cy-Woods

    Clear Springs.

Teams that didnt exsist 20 years ago:

    Cinco Ranch

    Klein Collins

A few other teams that have made impacts that werent around 20 years ago:

    Hightower

    Alief Taylor

    Seven Lakes

    Morton Ranch

    Cy-Ridge

    Dekaney

    College Park

and that's just the 6A division

    Marshall

    Bush

    Ridge Point

    Foster

    George Ranch

    Kingwood Park

    Tomball Memorisal

    Magnolia West

None of these schools were around 15 years ago.

  3. In the last 20 years from DFW Guyer, Trinity, Hebron, North Crowley, Ryan, Mesquite, Garland, Grapevine, Lewisville and Plano won championships. Making a case that "single school" districts are the only schools winning championships is beyond foolish.

Times have changed the last "20" years....decade would be more accurated...Plano hasn't been the same, nor Mesquite North Crowley?....and in that same time period half of the top teams in GHA didnt even exsist 20 years ago. What's foolish is thinging that having a 1-2 HS district isn't an advantage.

  4. No matter where in Texas you place Aledo, Ennis, Cedar Hill, and Highland Park would always be a 1 school district. Those are small schools. Southlake Carroll is close as well to being small I believe (only 2500).

Allen, DeSoto, and the Plano schools are the only ones who could be broken up into larger schools yet the three planos are academic schools not football ones. But North Shore has 4200 and Katy has 3000. Same as all the cy-fair and woodlands schools. Katy is the only one that wins yet the other have large enrollments. Why don't they win using your logic? One mega school district in Cy-Fair would be 30 thousand students. Katy 18 thousand. Woodlands and Conroe 14 thousand. Humble around the same. Pearland and Alvin just went to two school districts. Fort Bend as well. The districts in DFW are smaller in terms of area served that is why they are one school districts.

Using your logic Friendswood, Galveston, La Porte, La Marque and Stafford all should have won state in the past decade. Why haven't they? Don't say money because Friendswood is as rich as DFW schools. If you include two schools (since you did with Trinity) add North Shore and Alvin to that list.

Friendswood, Galveston, LaPorte etc...are "Small" on the radar. North Shore and Alvin are two HS districts..(Galena Park/North Shore, Manvel/Alvin) Katy is an exception to the rule...they still have their original feed pattern and a system is in play. The other districts don't. All the talent is split up and send to different HS's after Jr high. Kids that were WR's and DB's are now Qb's in Cy-Fair ISD because the pressure is on them to win fast so you take all your studs and put them on offense. You made a great point...The districts in DFW are smaller in area's served, meaning....they keep all of their talent in one spot. As this article points out...."The smaller the district, the better":

    http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/high-schools/headlines/20131220-katy-s-football-dynasty-is-nothing-new-but-what-makes-the-suburb-so-unbeatable.ece

Friendswood may be as "Rich" as the DFW schools, but lets get real, Freindswood isn't an area being flooded with College Scouts because of all the talent in the area.

  5. How about: Ft Worth, Birdville, Hurst-Euless Bedford, Grapevine Colleyville, Dallas, Northwest, Keller, Denton, Plano, Garland, Rockwall, Mesquite, Arlington, Irving, Lewisville, Carrolton-Farmers Branch, Richardson, Saginaw, Frisco, McKinney, etc? A lot of single district schools? Try again.

What are the top schools in DFW?

    Allen- 1 HS

    Desoto- 1 Hs

    Trinity- 2 HS

    SLC- 1 HS

    Coppell- 1 HS

    Aledo- 1 HS

Who are the "powerhouses" year in year out in Ft. Worth, Grapevine, etc and all the districts you've named?

State Champs from DFW the last decade:

    Allen- 1 HS

    Aledo- 1 HS

    Ennis-  HS

    Cedar Hill- 1  Hs

    Stephenville- 1 Hs

    SLC- 1 HS

    Trinity- 2 HS

    Highland Park- 1 HS

The ONLY exeption is Denton Guyer

I like all these picks, especially the Friday's pick's :) but I think Katy will have a hard time with Cedar Hill's Cedrick Ware, that kid is a beast, he was in beast mode against Westfield last week. Katy will not be able to contain him.

naaaaa...Very rare for RB's to have field days vs Katy...Jamal Charles did, but in a losing effort.....Lodge is who Katy should worry about.

  7. I don't want to get on a rant about Woodforest, but just before I walked in they made two little girls, about 5 and 8, dump their Icee's they tried to walk in with.

I stared at the person at the gate, and said "Really? Do you think the girls Icee's were a danger to anyone?"

They silently point to the restrictions sign, with their long list on it. I was ticked at Woodforest and I felt bad for the little girls.

I walked in....had to empty my pockets....I had a pack of gum. I was told "Sir, you can't bring that gum in here"....so I said "well, Ok, I'll just OPEN the gum, chew it....problem solved"....I was then told "Sir, you must chew the gum before you enter the stadium, it's not allowed, chew it, Swallow it, or toss it in the trash"

  8. pe2009, I am proud of you because you turned a negative into a positive. That is what people of character do. But don't let it eat at you, life is too short.

I dont let it eat me...I just remember the feeling of being proud and happy...feeling accomplished and no one even said "how was the game?"........Too often we forget that these ARE kids and these are important times....the reason myself and many of you are taking this to heart now.....I graduated in 92 and it STILL matters to me.

  9. You have to break the cycle....in 4 years of High School football...my mom never saw me play, my dad saw one and he left at halftime...I know how that felt, so I try to make all of my kids events when possible...life happens. I also disagree that many of these parents arent trying and can make it to liquor stores etc...many of these kids are from single parent households, the city bus is transportation....and the parent or parents can't make it

  10. Unfortunately this is a way of life for most inner-city schools.  I did not realize this completely until I started working at Alief Hastings.  Last year when we traveled to Aldine, we averaged about 10 fans and most of those were coaches' families.  This year we didn't have to travel as far, so we averaged about 20.  Some reasons behind this, (actual experience), : no vehicle - only travel by bus or cab; homeless; only parent working two jobs; no babysitter; living without a parent; parent just doesn't care (rather be doing other things).  The last one really bothers me but it is the smallest percentage of reasons (in my experience).  No matter what the reason, it is sad for the kids who bust their butt all year for the team. One game in Aldine last year, the coaches' families were the ONLY fans there.  They all sat through the rain and when the game was over, ALL of our players went to the stands and thanked them for supporting them.  Most of the wives and daughters either cried or tried really hard not to.

I dont know if it's the same way, but I attended Elsik back in the day and it was a lottery.......you didnt choose what school you went to. You could have siblings going to two different High schools.....kind of hard of parents, especially single parents if both kids have a game that night. I also heard rumors the start of last season when Alief Taylor played Katy on ESPN that the game was MANDATORY for teachers and staff to fill the stands. Since you're in the know, is there any truth to that? And I agree....win or lose, support the kids.

  11. All the 4A schools? Isn't Bellville and that district considered the greater Houston area?

The "Small" schools in Houston are probably HISD...and they have no followings what so ever...other than that......really know small schools unless you want to count Stafford, Sealy, Brookshire Royal

  12. The Woodlands, true that they've gotten better, but so has katy and Westfield. looking back, its crazy. Katy and Westfield lost to two of the top teams in Houston...Woodlands lost to a team that barely made the playoffs, so who knows......They would have to get past Desoto in their half of the bracket. I really dont see a "Lock" in Region 3 D1....Lamar has some issues but I doubt anyone can expose them. Every game this week in D1 seems to be a toss up...no clear favorite except for Cy-Ranch over Aldine , the rest of them can go either way. D2 I would say Katy even though I think the Manvel game will be closer than last sesaon. Pearland was able to run on them and almost tied the game up after giving up 28 first quarter points. I think Katy's run game and defense is a few notches higher than Pearlands.

  13. I dont think it was the stadium that had them upset.  It was the price of the stadium.  As nice as NCISD stadium is it was only about 30 million where i hear KISD is spending 58 million

Not the price......location and many wanted it as a seperate bond. Also, costs go up...the longer they waited...the higher the price goes. And again..Animosity towards Katy HS has a LOT to do with it....from having to remove the color "Red" from the KATY ISD logo at midfield at Rhodes stadium...to signs like these around town, The stadium is for 8 HS's...yet opponents are/were calling it a stadium for the Katy Tigers.
