stevenash got a reaction from TxHoops in A Little Education...
TXHOOPS- Not offended in the slightest. These types of exchanges are always instructive and stimulating. Also, I don't know that I am particularly bright. I would guess that I am average. But I do know how to work and apply myself and I believe that those qualities have, sadly, been minimized in importance by our society.

Dove- in this day of "fairness and equality" why should any institute of higher learning be coined as a black school or white school, etc. etc. etc.? -

I have a question for Woorbootz- I noticed that you were suggesting to Tragichippy that his source is, from your viewpoint, questionable. What is it that makes you more reliable than his source? -

But our friends on the left honestly believe that the profit motive is evil and that the primary reason companies go into business should be to provide jobs and break even. Best example of that flawed thinking is British Petroleum. They have paid out billions in damages ( mostly from profits) If they hadn't made a profit, the government would institute another bailout which ultimately winds up coming out of our pockets and our childrens pockets and their childrens pockets, etc etc etc

Without getting too deep into semantics, I am confident that Da Dove gets my drift. -

stevenash got a reaction from CraigS in racism
Sorry Dove, but the color of ones skin and the history of race relations in this country do not, under any circumstance, provide the individual occupying the highest office in the country exemption from scrutiny and criticism. Mr. Bush received (and still receives, for that matter) a lot of criticism and it was because people disagreed with how he ran the office. Why should it be any different with Mr. Obama?(since they are/were both Presidents, the main common denominator) Sometimes it would appear that those who cry loudest about the desire for equal treatment, actually want better than equal treatment in order for things to be equal from their perspective. -

That is a big issue. There are those who believe every difficulty and every hardship encountered by some is always, without a doubt, a product of racism. I watched one individual, in a very subtle manner, try to suggest that the criminal acts that have taken place in BISD are the products of racism.

How dare you say that? You must be a greedy capitalist pig who has no compassion for the little guy, the one our President is watching out for. You must be one of those who believes that companies are created to make a profit rather than giving all to their employees. You must be one of those who believes that companies should try to generate excess capital and invest it in more plants and more people instead of dividing it up amongst the deserving employees who take all of the risk in your business.

Of course he was wrong. You can tell a lot more about a person you dont even know by his political values expressed on a message board than your father can after playing basketball with a man for many years and also having hundreds of conversations with him at HJ basketball games. I commend you on your unique capabilities. -

Well, Big Girl told me that the National Economy was good but the Texas economy was bad and that Rick Perry was not a good college student. -
stevenash got a reaction from 77 in Smitty & Stevenash - When Will The Wealth Trickle Down?
Its better to judge a person by his actions rather than his words AKA " If you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it, PERIOD." "This will be the most transparent administration in history". Those are all fine words but they weren't honored by the author.

Dove, Big girl, Pamfam, and New tobie: If the Miami Heat wins the title again, that will be three straight years ( the rich getting richer) This is unfair to the Milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers ( poor getting poorer). I demand legislation be enacted to neutralize this inequality. We should institute a fairness tax on the Heat. This tax would require them to win each game by 15 points or more in order to count it as a win. I also think they should be required to have at least 5 caucasians on the playing roster in the interest of diversity and tolerance. Furthermore, the Heat should compensate the BUcks and Cavs for the ill gotten gains they have in attendance revenue. Since they have superior attendance and more attendance revenue, the oppressed deserve a portion of those ill gotten gains. All of this, of course, is a reasonable way to "level the playing field" After all, it's only right that we "spread the wealth" -

Based on recent news about the VA, it would appear that your Houston uncle is lucky that he made the A list and not the other one. I took my basic training at Ft. Knox Kentucky and my advanced training there as well. Where did you take your basic training. Not being a big fan of government sponsored medical care, I have never been to the VA. I chose to be responsible for my own medical care and all has worked out well. While my care is not free, I am satisfied with what I am getting with my coverage even though I have no need for free birth control pills. I always operated under that crazy notion that I should pay for my healthcare and that you should pay for yours. I see no reason to be forced to handle it another way. If you have to ask yourself who you had in mind for Alzheimers test, it means you probably are in the early stages.

Yes, I love this. Someone claims to be the Enlightened/chosen one but is unaware of any of the current scandals. Enlightened, what do you think of this statement:" If you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it PERIOD." Oops, I forgot. You probably haven't heard anything about that. Now what was your name again?

stevenash got a reaction from Honest Abe in Smitty & Stevenash - When Will The Wealth Trickle Down?
If there were no "contributions" in the last two elections, what effect would it have had on the outcome? So we need more in the middle class? Ok- Do we try to lift some of the lower class up to the middle class or do we tax the upper class until they become part of the middle class? We have more programs aimed at helping the lower class than we have ever had and it is proof that throwing more money at it is not the answer.

From " The War on Poverty: 50 Years Later" A House Budget Committee Report
The Causes of Poverty
Family
Perhaps the single most important determinant of poverty is family structure. It has been the subject of fierce academic debate since the Moynihan Report- named after is author, then- assistant secretary of labor Daniel Patrick Moynihan ( Democrat)-was released in 1965. The Moynihan report identified the breakdown of the family as the key cause of poverty within the black community.
More recent research on Americans of all backgrounds has backed up Moynihans argument. SIngle women head less than 20% of all households but they head 34% of all poor households.
Poverty is most concentrated among broken families. For all families, the poverty rate was 13.1% But 34.2% of families headed by a single female were considered below poverty, and 22.8% of households composed of unrelated individuals were consider to be in poverty.
These are not my words but the words of a government sponsored study. Still want to blame RIck Perry?
