I understand everyone likes to talk of the difference of the approach of the school districts between NISD and PNGISD. Yes, there are definitely differences between them, but I think the elephant in the room is that there is a significant difference in the revenue brought into each school district. Despite the feeling that NISD is equal on everything with their neighbors across the tracks, the reality is NISD is not a “wealthy” school district. Everyone likes to complain that NISD does a horrible job of doing this and doing that, but in a sense they do amazingly well with what resources they have. Could they do better? Yes. Could they be more creative? Yes. But, it’s not as easy as being about mismanagement of the district or poor decisions. And, apparently the people constantly criticizing NISD have caviar dreams on a McD’s budget. NISD does not have the industries that PNGISD has. Its major revenue is on the home properties, and last I checked they are pretty landlocked. Look at a majority of the large successful programs in the state with state of the art facilities who are “wealthy”, and yes, they usually have good programs. However, the game is still played on a field whether the stadium is $100 million or $100,000. What is lacking in NISD currently is the mentality and attitude of a champion. Nederland was down for many years prior to Coach Neuman. What he brought was an attitude and a belief that they were at a championship level and winners. There were many years that Nederland was lacking in talent and still won, beating much more talented teams from PNG. Currently, the mental game is being lost every game because the attitude isn’t there. Yes there needs to be a focus on getting back to the basics of football. Discipline. Skill development. And attitude. But, good grief Charlie Brown, how about people just embrace where NISD is as a district with limited resources and be supportive of the children in the district. I’m sure all the “experts” on this board will pile on and go off on how they have held tickets for x number of years and they have 10 million bulldog shirts. At the end of the day, it’s 15,16,17, year old young men playing football. The Negative Nellys are quite ridiculous. Let’s just see what happens and be supportive and have a little faith instead of just constantly complaining how NISD can’t be trusted and they will screw this up and yada yada. PNGISD made a great hire based on recommendations by TD. And good for them. It turned out well for them. Why don’t we just see what Monday brings and quit complaining? Apologies for the rant. But, there needs to be some reality on here.

Just saying we are playing all three this preseason I should get a special title like Oracle of Crosby for this one.

When I went to academic competitions in Nederland their schools were piss poor work. I went on a tirade here and got shot down. Ned deserves better.

School district boundaries don’t follow city limits. NISD has all of Nederland plus healthy portions of Port Neches and Port Arthur and all of Central Gardens and Beauxart Gardens. PN-GISD loses roughly a quarter of Port Neches to NISD and a fifth of Groves to PAISD, though it picks up two neighborhoods in Port Arthur.
It’s more like both districts have a town and a half; the number of residents and households the two districts have is almost always roughly even. When I was in school (PN-G c/o 2011), Nederland had about a hundred more students than PN-G.
The fact that PN-G is ~15% larger than Nederland now is significant. That’s the largest enrollment disparity between the two schools in at least 30 years, maybe longer. What you’re seeing is PN-GISD’s aggressive approach to replacing schools since 2008 paying dividends. Young families took notice.

A good friend of mine from law school is a Nederland grad and still practices in Austin. Grabbed a beer with him a few weeks back. He told me just about everyone he knows from his high school graduating class who’s still in the area and has kids is trying to find a house in PN-GISD right now. Top reasons are the current success of PN-G’s extracurricular programs and the condition of NISD schools, the new high school aside.
Meanwhile, the only person I know from my high school days who’s sending her kids to Nederland has a beef with a retired PN-GISD administrator (petty reasons, not real ones) that she’s still not over.

    A non sequitur:
When I left SETX in the 80s it seemed like lots of PNG folks were moving to Nederland. When I returned in the 2000s it seemed like folks were moving from Nederland to PNG.  The two towns are like an amalgamated area, except for the school districts, and especially athletics.

I just now googled Splendora.  It's in between Patton Village and Midline, south of Cleveland, in case anyone else besides me was wondering.  It boasts a small restaurant called Puebloritaville that looks interesting. Looking at photos of the stadium there, the home side looks big enough to accommodate the PNG crowd, all they'll need to do is switch sides, for a decent payday for them.

I like PNG’s non district schedule the last few years.

    - 1 decently easy win.  You can get some different kids in and try some new things.

    - 1 team that’s pretty equal.  You have to play a complete game to win.

-1 team that’s better than you.

You can learn a lot about your team from all 3 of those type games.  I’m not a fan of scheduling 0-3 and getting beat up before district.  Monte still may have a job if he didn’t schedule 0-3 starts the last few years.
Also with the out of town districts, I doubt coaches will be looking to travel much for non district games.  We’ve had enough early releases from school the last few years…..

To go to the trouble of getting TD on board, only to not hire his recommendation - I’m not saying there would be a riot, but it might be smart to buy stock in a pitchfork company.

The best defensive lineman PN-G’s got right now is Hernandez. That kicker who won offensive MVP for the Indians in the state championship is Oceguera.
The Hispanic kids can play just as well as the black, white and Asian kids. Nederland’s issue isn’t their kids’ race.

Did you see how many Hispanics play for PnG? Have a look at the roster. They’re a strength. With a good program, everyone can excel.

I remember thinking PN-G didn’t have the athletes.
Then Jeff Joseph took those athletes to two consecutive state championships.
Coaching and culture are just as much a factor as raw talent.

Maybe something is being looked at for part of this continuation. Ill fill you in after turnaround. You are one of the people who, if interested, could take part in it. Working with a mutual friend and two long time PN-G historians. Looking at some ideas. Also working with a great man from PA to help develop something for the great history of Port Arthur. A few other ideas being kicked around. Little to early in the process to get to deep in discussion.

    1. I don't believe a new AD/HFC will readily change that type of existing culture that you're talking about, re student involvement across the board, etc.  I hope I'm wrong, maybe the new guy will know all about these things.  It could be that he'll just do the best he can with the current HS enrollment, but really focus on the youngsters from middle school on down, I don't know.
    2. After watching 16 live football games and halftimes this season I can say that (IMO) student involvement at ALL of the other high schools that PNG played was pretty low. I wondered at every game what the deal was, with purported enrollments, why the other bands and drill teams, etc, were so small.  Is it lack of money? Lack of tradition? What else? The only other band and drill team that came remotely close I think was Dayton.
    3. After watching a few of this season's playoff games (PNG), my older sisters and brother, who graduated in the 50s and 60s, remarked that everything was still the same, even the last names. The only "new thing" to them, (and to me), was the tomahawk chop thing. That's a lot of long time tradition. There are many schools that have merged over and over, changed mascots, colors, songs, and there's no tradition.
    4. Hopefully the new AD will have the secret, and Nederland athletics and other related activities will come back.

PN-G often gets made fun of because of its core values of Honor, Pride, and Tradition, but those things matter.  As I get older and farther away from my time in the PN-GISD, I am more and more thankful for the generations of PN-G administrators, teachers, staff, and alumni that created all the great traditions and Indian Spirit culture that still mean the same thing in 2024 like they did in 1925.  What outanup said was 100% correct.  If you are a student at PN-G and you cannot find a group or activity to join, then you don't want one.  That makes this alum feel proud and I would feel that way if our football team was 16-0 or 0-10.  PN-GISD, alums, and the leaders in the cities of Port Neches and Groves want the kids to be involved from K-12...Honor, Pride, and Tradition meant something in 1925, it still means something today, and it will carry you a long way in life. Here's to Nederland finding the right coach, re-energizing the ISD, and the kids enjoying success.  I still gotta finish with Go Indians.

Its a completely different culture across the board.  Barrow has caught a lot of heat and owns some of it but its a Nederland ISD issue.  I read a lot about kids playing multiple sports and all that.  It really goes to overall involvement.  PNG encourages a culture where kids are involved at a early age one way or the other.  From students doing broadcast during games, 75 girls in drill team, band, and all the way thru into their athletics.  Nederland needs to take a hard look at why their students are not getting involved.  I might be wrong but I believe if your a cheerleader or drill team at Nederland you are not allowed to participate in spring sports, but I know at PNG they can.  Why does one place have this type of participation in all there organizations and literally across the street their number shrink every year.  One answer culture.  Culture starts with your leaders and there is more than one leader at Nederland who should have to be answering these questions.  Barrow and a lot coaches are going to take the bullet for this and rightfully so but their is still plenty of people from Principal Natalie Gomez to our Superintendent who need to take a hard look at the type of culture they are creating around them.
