Is WO-S football going to the I-formation the right move?

I think that any great coach recognizes what offensive plays and/or schemes work best with the athletes that he has. Coach Thompson has been in this business for a long time, and if he does change the offense, it's because he thinks it will suit the players he has the best.
Completely agree.  Sometimes coaches will impose a system on a team regardless of whether they have the personnel to run it successfully or not  (WO-S made that mistake in 2001).  I trust Coach Thompson NOT to do that.  Our returning QB (Salter) is better suited for a rushing style offense as opposed to the spread.  Plus, I can see the Mustangs running the spread part-time and make it all work.
Griff, from what I hear, there will be a bunch, maybe 100%, "I". I think our line is going to be much bigger this year and will be boasting the state power lifting champ. This might be the reason for the change. I don't think anyone knows better than Cornel what kind of athletes we have so I have faith that whatever offense we're in it's the best one for the team.
The 2000 offense wasn't flashy but we hung our hat on defense and field position.  I think (not worth much) that since we got our rear handed to us by Ennis in the championship game, our focus had been on a high powered offense rather than the basics.  I think if WOS gets back to defense first, and a ground focused offesne with the ability to throw the ball....it is a recipe for success.  The game is shortened, the D isn't on the field as much; which leads to field position and points on the board.
That's all fine and dandy, but the game is only shortened by the ability to move the chains. If you don't have the line to block in the "I", then you don't get first downs. You don't get first downs and the game is only short for your offense and extra long for the defense. This conservative offense can be the worst thing possible if you don't have the hosses to line up and make it go.

It is the right move.  Orangefield proved that if you bring something different to the table........it works.

Orangefields offense is nothing like the "I".

I know that gas......Who in 21-3A runs the "I"?  Not one team.  It will help WO-S.

It looks like you believe that WO-S doesnt have the linemen to run the "I"......I think they do.  When you ran the power sweeps last year.....did it work?

To the contrary, Gas has said he does, too:

Looooooooked right over that one.

Sorry Gas.  Thanks Grad.

I knew WO-S had a line coming back! :D

Again in 3A you don't have to average 275 across the line since you won't be facing teams with an abbundance of huge D Linemen or big LB's.
A rested Defense will make more plays and lead to more points. That said, WOS has the athletes to score quickly no mater what offense they are running! The big question is will Cornell put the majority of his athletes on defense?

Also from what I understand, this incoming freshman class will have the ability to be very diverse on offense. Good passing QB and several big time targets. Could see some flip floping in offensive philosophy over the next four years??

You might! They are a spread group from the ground up with a bunch of talent.

Yeah, I get what you're saying now. ;) Not that they are similar, just both different than the norm in 21-3A. Truth be told, I would love to see what WOS could do in an offense like what Orangefield runs.

Not too sure about that NdN, look at Waco LaVega when we (WOS) played them a few years ago. That 3A team probably averaged 275 on the line. That had to have been the largest 3A team I had ever seen.

The I will make them better on D.  It will chew up the clock and keep the defense fresh for four quarters.
Only, and that is ONLY if we can move the chains. One our Achilis heels in the past is that we had the potential to score so quickly that the D never had time to rest. I know it may sound crazy, but sometimes speed kills YOU also. So maybe the "I" would help us. i do not see a perfect answer here but I do believe in Cornell and his football brain. Dont be surprised when he will pull something out of his %$#^ and surprise ALOT of people. He is that good a coach.
