spidersal Posted March 22 Report Posted March 22 Football and basketball coverage on SETx sports are pretty darn good, so my question is why is baseball coverage so bad? Quote
monknuk68 Posted March 23 Report Posted March 23 Baseball in general that's been a sport that is shrinking in coverage , pro and amateur. Perhaps the length of the game less involvement by youth , compared to in the years past. In my opinion, it is no longer America's pastime. People like having a time clock. Baseball has no really limits on how long you can play. Just my opinion. As for this forum, baseball is always the odd sport out. Some love the sport, but that love is starting to go away. Most people that watch pro baseball or forty years old or older. Quote
KF89 Posted March 23 Report Posted March 23 Not many parents or family members care to post about games or scores anymore, don't want to post the losing scores of their teams, because too many get their feelings hurt over anything that is not positive or can't handle the facts, most only care about their kids only & don't have the care or time for other baseball stuff. Ashley Elam does a great job on his Fbook page posting scores & other things about baseball & all high school sports. Quote

AggiesAreWe Posted March 23 Report Posted March 23 To answer the question as far as this website goes as to why the baseball coverage isn't as much as football and basketball, there are two specific reasons, One, our beloved admin Todd Broussard (WOSGrad) is no longer with us. Todd was the man that took care of pretty much everything here at SETXsports. He was the one who posted schedules, game threads, scores and standings for our coverage area teams in all our sports. It was a big loss for us when he passed away in August of 2021. Since then, we have never been able to completely fill his shoes. He was such a special person and we miss him dearly. Second, in the summer of 2022, I decided to retire (in hindsight, semi-retire) from the site. I had told my wife that when she retired as a school teacher, that I would retire with her so that we could spend more time at the beach together. I would no longer do any broadcasting and would take a step back from my admin duties. I told the owner (Jordan Wilson) that he would need to get some other mods to handle those duties. Jordan asked me to stay on for a little while until he could get others to take over. So I did. We had Bigdog and WOSdrummer99 take over the football forum as far as schedules, pickems, scores and standings. They have been a big help in that forum. Jordan went with a bot system to create game threads and the scoreboard thread. I helped when needed. Football forum is in good hands. As for basketball, several of the area basketball coaches were concerned that the basketball forum would die off without me tending to it. So they asked me to stay on and take care of that forum. I talked to Jordan about it and we agreed that I would handle that forum on my own with the understanding that after basketball season was over, I would not handle anything else until football season. I put a lot of love and effort in that forum and many folks have expressed their appreciation. But, those days are numbered as well. I honestly don't know how much longer I'll continue to take care of that forum. One, maybe two more years. We will see. As for the baseball forum, KF89 has done the best that he can with posting schedules and scores. I know how tough it is to try and do it all by oneself. It's really beneficial to have others invested in posting info in the forum. I was hoping other mods or members would help in that regard. A lot of truth has been stated in regards to the popularity of the three sports, particularly on this website. Football is definitely king and always will be. Basketball has always had more traffic on the site than baseball. I admit that part of that is how we (I) cover basketball much more than baseball. But even so, the basketball forum has 100,000 more posts in that forum than the baseball forum. It is what it is. KF89 is doing what he can but until we get others to commit to help out, the baseball forum will lack. Don't ask me, I am about to start my 4 1/2 month vacation from here. lol tvc184, 3’s please, EastTexas1AFan and 1 other 4 Quote
bullets13 Posted March 23 Report Posted March 23 quite frankly, the effort and time put in is lost on all but a handful of members. I made a pretty serious effort in the soccer forum several years back due to my soccer background, and the threads would get 1 or 2 responses from the same small handful of members. At some point the reward isn't worth the effort. I would love to see more posters take the initiative and post game threads and results for their schools. KF89, AggiesAreWe and tvc184 3 Quote
A BUC 77 Posted March 24 Report Posted March 24 I've noticed over the past years ESPN has put baseball in the backseat. Is the popularity of baseball going down? On the professional level, I see most ballparks full of people. Maybe not capacity crowds. but still a lot of fans and these guys play almost every night. You can't play football every night. You have to know the game a little to enjoy it. If it's boring, then that means it's a pitcher's duel. Quote

myrecordwashorrible Posted March 24 Report Posted March 24 Baseball on this site has little to no activity as stated. It could be partly due to the state of baseball below the collegiate level is infurating with parent's views of the ability of their children which is quite distorted. However, if you follow viewership trends for MLB, it is up quite a bit over the past decade and youth participation has recently rebounded quite a bit. The NBA has taken a massive hit in viewership though. The NFL is well the NFL and college football remains strong. I don’t state the above as a stitch head (I am one). Each summer i teach a sports sociology class and we discuss viewership and attendance patterns as part of a sports sociology class. The numbers actually surprised me as I don't care for pumpkin bouncing but was very surprised by the decline. BULLETS, I refuse to discuss kickball as I am an 'Merican! Take your communism elsewhere. I recently learned who bullets13 is folks, I am just giving him a hard time. A quick internet search reveals the number quite easily. KF89 and bullets13 1 1 Quote

Apple TV has baseball games; Amazon Prime has baseball games... games are more accessible now than in years past. Also, youth baseball is an all-time high. Go to Ford Park in Bmt, Marauder Park in Lumberton, or the fields in Westlake, Lake Charles, etc. and you'll find every field being used and brackets loaded with teams. Quote
Box1 Posted Friday at 03:58 PM Report Posted Friday at 03:58 PM As crazy as it may seem for some, viewership numbers for MLB and NBA are nearly identical over the past several years. Splitting hairs really, and MLB has seen a recent uptick due to rule changes for the better. Quote
AggiesAreWe Posted Friday at 05:04 PM Report Posted Friday at 05:04 PM Isn't the topic high school baseball and it's coverage or lack thereof here on the site? HS baseball has always been behind HS football and basketball here at SETXsports. Quote
Box1 Posted Friday at 07:15 PM Report Posted Friday at 07:15 PM Just people offering opinions on the correlation between coverage and popularity. I don't think it needs much explanation as to how the conversation egrigously got to where it is. Quote
PhatMack19 Posted 1 hour ago Report Posted 1 hour ago At one time this site was the only place to get local scores updated in real time. We had threads for every game with great fans that updated every inning and some every batter. Now every team has GameChanger that anyone with a cell phone can pull up any game live. No other sport has this, thus they need this message board for updates. I did see one local varsity GC get shut off because the parent that was scoring for the team gave Little Jonny an error. His parents ran to the school board and said it was a hit. Maybe that team still needs this site….. Quote
