2019 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS

HARDIN-JEFFERSON HAWKS

2018 Record: 2-8 Overall, 0-4 District

5th Place in District 10-4A-II

Many in the western part of Hardin County were hoping that the return of Dwayne Dubois to the helm of the Hardin-Jefferson program would mean a return of happier times in Sour Lake.  However, the adjustment to the slot T proved a little too much to handle as the Hawks went winless in 10-4A-II play.  But 2019 brings hope that a year under their returning coach, as well as the return of eight starters on offense and nine starters on defense, will bring the Hawks back to the playoffs.

Head Coach: Dwyane Dubois

Assistant Coaches: Bradon Granger (Offensive Coordinator), Mark Humplik (Defensive Coordinator), Mike Fogo, Chad Guillory, Jeff Lee, Aaron Pollock, Josh Rutherford, Edd Trotter

Offense:

The old fashioned Slot-T offense that Dubois perfected as an assistant in Vidor will again be the set of choice at Hardin-Jefferson and he will have eight returning starters to run it.  Running the offense will be senior quarterback Weston Nugent.  Joining him will be senior tailback Izakk Whitman and junior fullback Kevin Borque.  Also seeing time in the backfield will be junior halfback Sage Roberts, senior tailback Arcadian Judge and sophomore tailback Brayden Martel.  Junior split end Austin Samaha and senior tight end Michael McIntosh return to figure in the Hawk passing game.  Look for senior split end Jacob Connelly to also see significant time out wide.  Veteran's returning the Hawk offense line will include junior center Cody Caldwell, junior guard Hayden Burton and senior offensive tackle Bronson McClelland.  They will be joined by senior tackle Jack Young and junior guard Ben Leon.

Defense:

Nine starters return to the Hardin-Jefferson 50 defense in 2019.  Senior tackle Enrique Montes (2nd team all-district), and defensive ends McIntosh and senior Ryan McFarlin return to a defensive line which will also include Samaha, Leon and sophomore Gavin Vazquez.  Seniors Dillon Bryant and Brock Nevils, as well as junior Dakota McNair return to line up at linebacker.  Roberts will also be counted on at linebacker.  Junior safeties Collin Pomirko (2nd team all-district) and Zac Hanson will anchor a Hawk secondary which will also feature Whitman and junior Sam Dickerson at cornerback.  Senior Thomas Jones and sophomore Chris Roberts will also see time in the secondary.

Special Teams:

While special teams positions will be finalized a fall camp, returning senior Tyler Wooten will have first shot at the kicking job while Sage Roberts is the lead candidate for the punting job.  Returners will also be finalized at camp.

    • Head coach Brad Jeffcoat will be leaving the coaching business. He has taken an industrial sales job.  Coach Jeffcoat has really enhanced the basketball program at LC-M. He has done really well. This is a very good job opening. I expect a promotion to happen here and not an outside hire.   On a personal note. I will miss my friend Brad in the gyms. Always enjoyed my time talking with him. Good luck Coach on your new job!!
    • The forecast for Huntsville looks brutal for this game. Houston TV says 3"-5" of rain this evening there. Hope they are wrong and you get this in though.
    • Did BU and WB have their Spring Football games yet?? I know Lufkin had theirs earlier this week.
    • 1. Trump has been the president before, and you're saying he has a chance of winning again due to Biden's poor performance. And you're agreeing that he's a turd sandwich (fair). Wouldn't it stand to reason then that Trump must not have had a poor performance during his presidency (since that's the only reason you're saying Biden would lose) which refutes your claim that the only reason Trump stands a chance is due to Biden's poor performance? You would have been better served to say that the only reason DJT may lose the presidency is because his personality is unappealing to many (turd sandwich). I'll take effective over feelings 8 days out of 7. 2. In my opinion, the major reason Biden has any shot at winning is TDS, a country that is slowly but surely being indoctrinated to socialistic thinking and a left-wing media bias that won't report what's truly happening. Definitely not going to win on the real issues. The real issues that are going to sink Biden: a. Wokeness and his unwillingness to stand up to it. He promised centrality, but instead took a hard left into oncoming traffic. b. Economy - go to the grocery store, and you'll see what I mean. c. Immigration - It's a dangerous free for all that is a huge national security risk, a personal safety risk, a health risk & an economic crisis for any city that has to take care of these illegal migrants. All to gain the Democrats millions of votes and control of the government basically forever. d. Energy - I could speak volumes, but you know what I mean. e. Crime and anti-LE sentiment - Turn on the news. f. Handling of COVID-19 - Biden did everything in his power to shut this country down short of martial law Get past the turd sandwich and do what's right for you, your family & the country as a whole.
