SETX Sports Fishing Tournament?
thetragichippy replied to bullets13's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Village creek has some bass in it if your around Lumberton......you can rent a canoe for about $35.00 for a day. I want to do that this summer. Last summer I figured out where bass hang out in a creek.....different than a lake for sure. Your other choice would be saltwater off the bank. You can read some post on this topic and find some locations. send me a PM, I live in Lumberton and coach as well. -

How big were the bream when you stocked it? How large is your pond? Have you seen any dead fish? has your pond ever flooded or spilled over(hurricane Ike?). Does your pond have grass or moss? You could also set a trout line and see if you can catch a catfish. Also, how deep?

Guess I will jump right in the middle of this I coached basketball this year and had a wining season(7 & 8year olds). When we could afford it, the weaker 2 kids played. My two top performers only played 1 quarter each on a few games because it gave the other kids a chance to get the ball and play 3 quarters. My son(1 of the performers ) was not happy sitting out because he KNEW he was better. He asked, "why am I getting punished for being good"? I explained my madness and he understood. Another thing would be motivation. If you show up, try, and be serious you get to play. You all know "that kid". The one that picks fights, watches another team practice, takes a water break without asking........ He will not play as much on my team because of his attitude and work ethic.....not because of his talent. I can work with "no talent" but I cannot work with "don't care". I also think being a good coach is being strict and teaching them good practice habits and rewarding when you see improvement. My weakest kid ended up being the most improved kid on my team. He actually made a layup in a game when he could not hit the backboard his first 3 weeks. So in a nutshell, you guys both make good points........ but I do think that teaching winning and a winning attitude is important.

Kid Pitch Bat Question
thetragichippy replied to thetragichippy's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Louisville Slugger TPX bats?? Can I get them at Academy? Forgive my stupidity, what is big barrell? -
I'm sure this has been asked but could not find it. I am also asking an "in general" question because I know it's specific to the kid, but here it goes. My son is 8, playing first year kid pitch. About what size and plan on picking it up at Academy. What do you guys recommend. He has a good fast swing.

Last year I coached kid pitch.....7-8yo. The only issue I have with revolving players to the infield is safety. Last year I had several grass pickers and sand throwers. Those kids did not play in my infield. I couldn't trust them to pay attention when the batter was a bat or their own teammate throwing them the ball. I had one kid get hit in the head because he was playing with the grass.

I kinda agree. I thought the reason for the tourney was to get a chance to meet everyone, outfish them and talk trash! ;D ;D -

SETX Sports Fishing Tournament?

I have fished enough of them I am sure I could figure it out. If I could get some help I would be happy to get this going. The first thing is to is advertise this in the forum and get some commitments. Then we could figure out an entry fee and prizes. I bet with some help we could get some local companies to sponsor some giveaways..... -

Fishing at Pleasure Island?

As mainly a Bass Fisherman, saltwater has always been difficult for me. A few years ago, before Rita I decided to really try saltwater fishing. I went out one day from Sabine Pass and spent most of the day trying locations I had heard were productive but with no luck. When I was just about to call it quits, I was coming back to the boat ramp and noticed some sunken shrimp boats 200 yards from the ramp. I started to fish next to the wrecks and came home with 10 flounder. Went out 4 days later with a buddy and fished the wrecks and came home with 20 flounder. It was so easy I would tie off to the wrecks and leave my boat and walk the top of the wrecks fishing vertical right next to the boat I was on. I did this until I had 60 flounder in my freezer and everyone who went with me had their limits. This was over about 4 trips. What I found was the fish only would bite 2 hours after an incoming tide. If I missed the tide, I would not catch anything. Before I figured it out I would fish for 2 and 3 hours without a bite. Then a couple hours after the tide would go out I would start catching them in the same place I had been for 3 hours. So a moving tide is the key to catching fish in salt water! Since Rita and Ike, the shrimp boat wrecks are gone.
