Hey... All I'm saying is that Ike is faster, bigger, stronger and more athletic....so if Dayton can beat them then just close up shop on 19-4A because it's a wrap.
-
Eisenhower will have 3 or 4 times as much speed as Dayton. If Dayton can somehow stay in that game, then I would like their chances to do quite well in 4a this year. Eisenhower is a dominating physical presence. Angleton is a little easier to contend with. Eisenhower just has a lot of big, strong athletes. I might try to make that game since Lee is open that week.
1992 Playoffs...undefeated 10-0 West Brook v Aldine Eisenhower @ Pasadena Memorial Stadium. What a game. Can anybody remember the show that QB Clarence Cruz and that huge defensive line put on. The Brook tried to get back in the game, but just couldnt get over the hump. I was a little kid and remember crying all the way back to Beaumont. How could we be 10-0 two years in a row and lose to an Aldine school once again. It started momentum for the Eisenhower program as they went on string of a few state semifinal appearances..and a finals appearances...
I was at this game. Never in my wildest dreams did I think Eisenhower was going to win. I just knew that WB was going to pull it off. I didn't have near as much knowledge of Eisenhower as I should have in order to make my decision, but WB was state ranked and had destroyed Baytown Lee(a horrible Gander squad granted).

I think you underestimate how much of an advantage it is to be the better athletes on the court. UCONN has better athletes than any other women's team can muster, so of course their fundamentals look great. My fundamentals are impeccable until I get on the playground with a guy that is 6'1" and can run a 4.7 and jump 30 inches. Then, the fact that I am 6'1",run a 5.2 and jump 20 inches makes my fundamentals go down the drain. Forget the state championship teams. Those guys would run the Lady Huskies right out of the gym. The girls could have all of the fundamentals in the world and it all goes down the tubes when you face guys that are taller, twice as quick and can jump three times as high as you. The real question is can UCONN beat your average college aged pickup game that one might find on a college campus. What about if I could pick up four guys from this forum and run a game with them? That might be a more fair comparison.

The other thread about last second wins got me to thinking about the games I watched that I wish I could re-live and recapture that same excitement one more time. Not games that you did not get to see or were not old enough to see. I mean games that you actually did see, and the excitement was such that you want to re-live the game. Two stand out as a Gander fan. The first was the 1994 game in the first round of the playoffs against Aldine Eisenhower. Eisenhower was fresh off of a couple of semi-final trips. Lee was fresh off of an 0-10 season in 1992 and 5-5 in 1993. Lee was lead by Jermaine Alfred at qb, Red Hammick, Haji Tommy, Wallace Louis and Clint Stoerner at receiver. Arthur Mapp at running back. This was the first time in probably 15 years that Lee had a snowball's chance in hell when it came to advancing in the playoffs. Very fun and satisfying game to watch. Lee won 29-22. The other game was not as satisfying, but still the most exciting to watch. Lee vs Hastings in the 1997 playoffs. Lee had made it to the second round, losing to Ball High in 94, lost to Humble in 95, didn't make the playoffs in 1996 despite a 7-3 record. 1997 was the year. Lee beat Aldine by a td in the first round, then worked over Brazoswood by a 56-24 score. The article from the Chronicle the next day will tell the rest of the playoff story.
Hastings is too good a football team for an opponent to commit six turnovers and expect to win. Ask Baytown Lee. The Bears' defense came up with four interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a blocked punt en route to a 30-20 playoff victory Saturday before 14,278 at Tully Stadium. The Class 5A Division II win advances Hastings to the quarterfinals against Beaumont West Brook. "You can't turn it over six times and have a punt blocked and win," said Baytown Lee coach Dick Olin. You certainly can't against the Bears, the District 20-5A co- champions who had outscored opponents 80-0 in their previous two playoff games. Hastings (12-1) was determined to stop Baytown Lee quarterback Ell Roberson III, who had directed the Ganders (11-2) to nine consecutive victories and the District 22-5A championship. With defensive end Terrance Colquitt and linebacker Charles Alpert pressuring Roberson constantly, the Bears accomplished that goal. Roberson suffered four interceptions and completed only seven of 29 passes for 114 yards. "We just tried to contain him and keep him inside the pocket so he couldn't scramble, because he does most of his damage when he scrambles," said Colquitt, who had an interception and fumble recovery. "We tried to keep him in the pocket. We did it pretty much all day." Olin said Roberson's play was not up to his usual standards but that Hastings had a lot to do with it. "Normally, he throws the ball extremely well," Olin said. "We didn't do it. We were throwing in spots where we shouldn't throw. "We made too many errors, and, of course, Hastings had something to do with that." For the Ganders, Derrick Shepherd rushed 19 times for 78 yards and had six receptions for 66 yards. The Ganders' only lead was 7-0 on Roberson's first-quarter, six- yard run. The rest of the game belonged to Hastings, led offensively by running back Jamil Tharp, who rushed for a game-high 113 yards on 12 carries. The Bears got first-half touchdown runs of one yard from Kilmick Williams and four yards from Nick Jones. They scored in the fourth quarter on an 18-yard reverse from Ahmad Roper and a three- yard run from Marcellus Chapman. The third of Jesse Torrez's four extra-point attempts was blocked, but he converted the other three, and his 25-yard field goal with 11:57 remaining in the first half gave the Bears the lead for good at 10-7. Though the Ganders had a 323-271 advantage in total yards, this game belonged to the Bears' defense, which was on the field a great deal. Three of Hastings' scoring drives covered less than a minute, and the other took barely more than two minutes as no scoring drive took more than four plays. Richard Cox, Kobina Amoo and Emmanuel Ajiodo also intercepted Roberson. Albert recovered the other fumble and also recovered Ajiodo's fourth-quarter blocked punt. "We have a good defense," Hastings coach Bobby Stuart said. "We've got a bunch of kids that can make plays. Every week, someone makes a different one." Lee's 20 points tied the third most points allowed this season by Hastings, which had shut out four of its previous five opponents, including playoff wins over Spring Woods (39-0) and Westbury (41-0).
It may seem unusual that I would want to watch that game again, but it was the only time I have ever seen Lee make the third round of the playoffs. The winner there would face West Brook the next week, and Lee had already worn out West Brook 35-12 earlier in the year, then Hastings had to play a weak New Braunfels team in the semis and worked them over. The stage was really set if Lee could have just managed not to turn the ball over 6 times against Hastings.

Looking Back Over The Years And Your Team

I remember freshman kicker Emmanuel Torres kicked a field goal as time expired against Clear Creek I believe to win, this was about 3 years ago. Some of the better last second wins were against North Shore in 2000 to squeeze into the playoffs and Kingwood the next year to squeeze into the playoffs again. -
DCTF's Predictions for 19-4A

For Lee right now it comes down to not having enough kids in the program. I think they have 7-10 seniors this coming year. They may have had 65 kids total in the spring game I saw. I don't even know if that's enough to field a JV squad. It's going to be tight. Lee does have some very talented juniors and sophomores right now. They have probably 2-4 D1 athletes and another 4-5 guys that could play at smaller colleges. Then, the drop off is pretty substantial after those top 8 guys. They don't have a whole lot of those typical pretty good athletes that fill in the holes on a high school football team. They either have borderline college recruits or guys that should be on JV. You know the old saying of you're only as good as your weakest link. Well that holds true for football too, particularly if you have 8 really good links and 14 weak links. I'm not trying to give an indictment to any of the Lee players. They all try hard. -

Notice I said more athletic. I never said better coached. Lee has a lot of individual talents that rarely ever gel into a cohesive team. Lee will be faster and quicker than BH this year. But North Forest is faster and quicker than BH every year too, so it isn't all about being faster and quicker. -

There are varying degrees of being good. Not everyone is going to win have won a state championship obviously. If it's state championship or bust in your mind, then you are in for a long, depressing ride. Having said that, Lee has had some entertaining, talented teams over the past 25 years. I have been privileged to watch a lot of future college stars as well as a couple of future NFL players. Lee just has a more talented pool of students when it comes to football. Lee has a lot more athletic players than BH this year as well. -

Yes Lee has....me I would venture to guess Baytown Lee has more graduates that have college degrees than Barbers Hill. Tell me who Barbers Hill has graduated that played at a D1 school. I can't think of any at all... Lee has to have had 25-30 in the past 20 years. -

Has Barbers Hill put any football players into d1 schools since the invention of the face mask? I was actually able to score a photo of the last Barbers Hill team to win a playoff game right after their victory. [img][Hidden Content]] -
Thanks Tex :) now with my new information I'll pick like this ;D 1.) Crosby - 7 returning on D that held Dayton to ZERO. Plus one of the 4 returning on O is the best QB in district!!! 2.) Dayton - Good Team / Great Coach + good returns on O and D 3.) BH - Most BH has returned in a while + we have a COACH ;D 4.) GCM - Should have good Defense , but with 2 returning on O can they score enough??? 5.) C.E. King - Good Return of players 6.) Lee - Not returning Squat, but can still be dangerous IMO 7.) GP - Returning a lot, but just can't compete 8.) N.Forest - If this team ever gets a Coach again they will be a force!
Not so sure about the "not returning squat" Lee returns the best player in the district which is always a good place to start. The Ganders may have a shortage of players, but they have some good athletes. Barbers Hill hasn't had squat since the mid 70's, so they are experts on observing squatless teams. -
Jerrod Johnson I'm guessing.

Baytown Lee Spring Scrimmage

To follow up, now that I am back home and on an actual computer. Nathaniel Scott and Jeffery Patton are both no longer on the team it seems. They were two that would have definitely started. Kion Richardson seems like he could be related to Jaevon. They both have about the same build. If Zellars does not start at qb, then he will probably be an inside receiver. I have a feeling coach will stick with Ruben. This will leave Richardson, Zellars, Franklin and Landry to man the four receiver slots. more than likely. Zellars is a big guy for a sophomore and can break some tackles. He and Franklin, who is more of a shifty, waterbug type of runner, would be on the inside more than likely. Richardson and Landry would man the outside receiver slots. Richardson's numbers speak for themselves. Landry has the size, if not blazing speed. He just needs to hit the weights as I said in an earlier post. He has a lot of potential. This would leave Josh Brooks, Israel Lodge, Jared Barnabba, Kion Richardson and Myron O'neal to play the defensive backs. My guess would be Lodge and O'neal at corner with Barnabba and Richardson at safety. I honestly can't remember the last time that Lee had 8 players that they could line up at receiver and db's and I would feel that not a one of them is just a placeholder type that is there by process of elimination. All of them can hold their own as athletes. The line needs 9 guys obviously for offense and defense. They have Boyd, Avery Garcia, Isaac Arispe and this kid that wore #50 at the scrimmage.... That's really about all you have that are known commodities. Past that they are going to have to dip down into some talented sophomores to be or hope for some good transfers ;D If you have a chance, you really should take in a Lee game just to watch Jaevon Richardson if nothing else. He is going to be worth the price of admission as long as they can get him the ball. -

All the Dayton coaches got there just before the end of the first half. I forgot to mention d landry in my first post. If he hits the weights this summer he could help at receiver. Thebaytown sun has a decent writeup bout the game. -
Baytown Lee Spring Scrimmage
gary-us-bonds replied to gary-us-bonds's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
21 for the white is Keith Johnson a jr to be rb. He is a good lil player. I'm typing from my phone in the middle of Louisiana at the moment. I watched the first half of the scrimmage. My observations... Lee will be extremely young. They only have nine seniors. Heck they only had 66 players period. Jaevon Richardson is a couple of notches above everyone else on the field. He will be a tough matchup for anyone lee plays. Josh zellars is the best qb on the team. His passes don't have the same zip as Ruben, but he is a much better athlete and the passing is a wash when you factor in the ability to make a decision on where and when to pass it. Keith Johnson will be a nice running back. He has nice open field moves and pretty good speed. Anointe Franklin showed pretty well for himself as a backup running back and as a safety. Couple of guysive never seen. One named kion Richardson and the other Myron oneal, both nice looking athletes that can contribute this year. Boyd looked good on the line. Cody salinas will be solid at s linebacker spot from what u could see. Always around the ball. The problems for lee will be along both lines. Sophomores will need to plug a lot of holes there. Also the depth just won't be there. I was pleasantly surprised that they actually have three solid liking linebackers. The athletes at lee are never in doubt. This crop is no different. They have zellars, both Richardson, oneal, barnaba, Johnson, Franklin and lodge as skill position players with plus athletic ability compared to your typical high school player. Last year they really only had three or four guys you could really say could match up athletically. This year should make for a muchmore explosive team. Whether that translates to wins remains to be seen. -
Today at 5pm At Stallworth I believe. I will have a full report tonight.
-
1997 - Baytown Lee vs Alief Hastings. third round of the playoffs, Hastings went on to play for the state championship. Lee was the better team in my homer opinion. The wind was really blowing hard that day and Ell had a rough day passing the ball. Still almost pulled it out only losing by 10 I believe.

The first 80 seconds of the video is against Pasadena Memorial in the playoffs when he scored 5 td's. The team in the white jersey that comes up next is Port Arthur Memorial. Team in the all blue is Channelview. White jersey blue helmet is West Brook. All blue this time is Sterling. Another all blue, this time is Katy Taylor. Blue pants, white jersey is Katy Seven Lakes. The interception he made was against Clear Creek. The all white is LaPorte. -

Has to be more behind this than what is being reported in the Baytown Sun. Said that they wanted a coach/AD and Chancellor didn't have the required experience??? The guy has been kicking butt and taking names over there at Barbers Hill. You gotta find another way to do it rather than just let him go. -
Jermaine Edwards was playing football in Baytown before he ever went to Dayton is how I remember it. He came back after moving first to Dayton.

The point was that 4A is easier than 5A, much the same point I made a few months ago. I don't care to talk trash to any team specifically, as I am a Gander fan, and am in no position to talk trash to anyone. Lee has been down for a few years. The only point that I have made is that 5A is tougher than 4A, which was just re-emphasized for me in the fact that this appears like a tough schedule to a 4A team. To a 5A team, that is just a middle of the road schedule of teams to play.
All I am saying is that it is a tough schedule for a 4A team, not appears to be. We all know 5A on average is better than 4A, afterall they are 5A. Pearland Dawson is 4A and they have done well against their pre-district 5A opponents. I understand your point but I am not sure you see mine.
We don't all know that if the problem. We had a couple of rookies in here a few months back trying to argue(with a straight face) that 5a was not better than 4a. :-\ That's the only reason I bring this up now. Of course that is a tough schedule for a 4a team. Dayton will be ready to play come district. As I have said before, I have no reason to dislike Dayton. I was born in Dayton and a lot of my relatives live in Dayton. I have gone to many Dayton games over the years and honestly I root for them second only to Lee.
-
Glad you think it is obvious, as I think it is obvious too. Some on this board will argue til the cows come home that 5a is not better than 4a. No where in my posts on this thread did I say Lee would beat Dayton. Lee could go winless this year.
