Looking Back Over The Years And Your Team
gary-us-bonds replied to skipper's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I remember freshman kicker Emmanuel Torres kicked a field goal as time expired against Clear Creek I believe to win, this was about 3 years ago. Some of the better last second wins were against North Shore in 2000 to squeeze into the playoffs and Kingwood the next year to squeeze into the playoffs again. -

For Lee right now it comes down to not having enough kids in the program. I think they have 7-10 seniors this coming year. They may have had 65 kids total in the spring game I saw. I don't even know if that's enough to field a JV squad. It's going to be tight. Lee does have some very talented juniors and sophomores right now. They have probably 2-4 D1 athletes and another 4-5 guys that could play at smaller colleges. Then, the drop off is pretty substantial after those top 8 guys. They don't have a whole lot of those typical pretty good athletes that fill in the holes on a high school football team. They either have borderline college recruits or guys that should be on JV. You know the old saying of you're only as good as your weakest link. Well that holds true for football too, particularly if you have 8 really good links and 14 weak links. I'm not trying to give an indictment to any of the Lee players. They all try hard. -

Notice I said more athletic. I never said better coached. Lee has a lot of individual talents that rarely ever gel into a cohesive team. Lee will be faster and quicker than BH this year. But North Forest is faster and quicker than BH every year too, so it isn't all about being faster and quicker. -

There are varying degrees of being good. Not everyone is going to win have won a state championship obviously. If it's state championship or bust in your mind, then you are in for a long, depressing ride. Having said that, Lee has had some entertaining, talented teams over the past 25 years. I have been privileged to watch a lot of future college stars as well as a couple of future NFL players. Lee just has a more talented pool of students when it comes to football. Lee has a lot more athletic players than BH this year as well. -

Yes Lee has....me I would venture to guess Baytown Lee has more graduates that have college degrees than Barbers Hill. Tell me who Barbers Hill has graduated that played at a D1 school. I can't think of any at all... Lee has to have had 25-30 in the past 20 years. -

Has Barbers Hill put any football players into d1 schools since the invention of the face mask? I was actually able to score a photo of the last Barbers Hill team to win a playoff game right after their victory. [img][Hidden Content]] -
Thanks Tex :) now with my new information I'll pick like this ;D 1.) Crosby - 7 returning on D that held Dayton to ZERO. Plus one of the 4 returning on O is the best QB in district!!! 2.) Dayton - Good Team / Great Coach + good returns on O and D 3.) BH - Most BH has returned in a while + we have a COACH ;D 4.) GCM - Should have good Defense , but with 2 returning on O can they score enough??? 5.) C.E. King - Good Return of players 6.) Lee - Not returning Squat, but can still be dangerous IMO 7.) GP - Returning a lot, but just can't compete 8.) N.Forest - If this team ever gets a Coach again they will be a force!
Not so sure about the "not returning squat" Lee returns the best player in the district which is always a good place to start. The Ganders may have a shortage of players, but they have some good athletes. Barbers Hill hasn't had squat since the mid 70's, so they are experts on observing squatless teams. -
Jerrod Johnson I'm guessing.

Baytown Lee Spring Scrimmage

To follow up, now that I am back home and on an actual computer. Nathaniel Scott and Jeffery Patton are both no longer on the team it seems. They were two that would have definitely started. Kion Richardson seems like he could be related to Jaevon. They both have about the same build. If Zellars does not start at qb, then he will probably be an inside receiver. I have a feeling coach will stick with Ruben. This will leave Richardson, Zellars, Franklin and Landry to man the four receiver slots. more than likely. Zellars is a big guy for a sophomore and can break some tackles. He and Franklin, who is more of a shifty, waterbug type of runner, would be on the inside more than likely. Richardson and Landry would man the outside receiver slots. Richardson's numbers speak for themselves. Landry has the size, if not blazing speed. He just needs to hit the weights as I said in an earlier post. He has a lot of potential. This would leave Josh Brooks, Israel Lodge, Jared Barnabba, Kion Richardson and Myron O'neal to play the defensive backs. My guess would be Lodge and O'neal at corner with Barnabba and Richardson at safety. I honestly can't remember the last time that Lee had 8 players that they could line up at receiver and db's and I would feel that not a one of them is just a placeholder type that is there by process of elimination. All of them can hold their own as athletes. The line needs 9 guys obviously for offense and defense. They have Boyd, Avery Garcia, Isaac Arispe and this kid that wore #50 at the scrimmage.... That's really about all you have that are known commodities. Past that they are going to have to dip down into some talented sophomores to be or hope for some good transfers ;D If you have a chance, you really should take in a Lee game just to watch Jaevon Richardson if nothing else. He is going to be worth the price of admission as long as they can get him the ball. -

All the Dayton coaches got there just before the end of the first half. I forgot to mention d landry in my first post. If he hits the weights this summer he could help at receiver. Thebaytown sun has a decent writeup bout the game. -
Baytown Lee Spring Scrimmage
gary-us-bonds replied to gary-us-bonds's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
21 for the white is Keith Johnson a jr to be rb. He is a good lil player. I'm typing from my phone in the middle of Louisiana at the moment. I watched the first half of the scrimmage. My observations... Lee will be extremely young. They only have nine seniors. Heck they only had 66 players period. Jaevon Richardson is a couple of notches above everyone else on the field. He will be a tough matchup for anyone lee plays. Josh zellars is the best qb on the team. His passes don't have the same zip as Ruben, but he is a much better athlete and the passing is a wash when you factor in the ability to make a decision on where and when to pass it. Keith Johnson will be a nice running back. He has nice open field moves and pretty good speed. Anointe Franklin showed pretty well for himself as a backup running back and as a safety. Couple of guysive never seen. One named kion Richardson and the other Myron oneal, both nice looking athletes that can contribute this year. Boyd looked good on the line. Cody salinas will be solid at s linebacker spot from what u could see. Always around the ball. The problems for lee will be along both lines. Sophomores will need to plug a lot of holes there. Also the depth just won't be there. I was pleasantly surprised that they actually have three solid liking linebackers. The athletes at lee are never in doubt. This crop is no different. They have zellars, both Richardson, oneal, barnaba, Johnson, Franklin and lodge as skill position players with plus athletic ability compared to your typical high school player. Last year they really only had three or four guys you could really say could match up athletically. This year should make for a muchmore explosive team. Whether that translates to wins remains to be seen. -
Today at 5pm At Stallworth I believe. I will have a full report tonight.

1997 - Baytown Lee vs Alief Hastings. third round of the playoffs, Hastings went on to play for the state championship. Lee was the better team in my homer opinion. The wind was really blowing hard that day and Ell had a rough day passing the ball. Still almost pulled it out only losing by 10 I believe.

Team in the all blue is Channelview. White jersey blue helmet is West Brook. All blue this time is Sterling. Another all blue, this time is Katy Taylor. Blue pants, white jersey is Katy Seven Lakes. The interception he made was against Clear Creek. The all white is LaPorte. -

Ouch...another opening at Barbers Hill
gary-us-bonds replied to BH85's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Has to be more behind this than what is being reported in the Baytown Sun. Said that they wanted a coach/AD and Chancellor didn't have the required experience??? The guy has been kicking butt and taking names over there at Barbers Hill. You gotta find another way to do it rather than just let him go. -
Jermaine Edwards was playing football in Baytown before he ever went to Dayton is how I remember it. He came back after moving first to Dayton.

I don't care to talk trash to any team specifically, as I am a Gander fan, and am in no position to talk trash to anyone. Lee has been down for a few years. The only point that I have made is that 5A is tougher than 4A, which was just re-emphasized for me in the fact that this appears like a tough schedule to a 4A team. To a 5A team, that is just a middle of the road schedule of teams to play.
All I am saying is that it is a tough schedule for a 4A team, not appears to be. We all know 5A on average is better than 4A, afterall they are 5A. Pearland Dawson is 4A and they have done well against their pre-district 5A opponents. I understand your point but I am not sure you see mine.
We don't all know that if the problem. We had a couple of rookies in here a few months back trying to argue(with a straight face) that 5a was not better than 4a. :-\ That's the only reason I bring this up now. Of course that is a tough schedule for a 4a team. Dayton will be ready to play come district. As I have said before, I have no reason to dislike Dayton. I was born in Dayton and a lot of my relatives live in Dayton. I have gone to many Dayton games over the years and honestly I root for them second only to Lee.
-
Glad you think it is obvious, as I think it is obvious too. Some on this board will argue til the cows come home that 5a is not better than 4a. No where in my posts on this thread did I say Lee would beat Dayton. Lee could go winless this year.

Don't want to belabor the point, as I realize that Lee is not a world beater, but that is a run of the mill schedule for a 5a team. If you're a 5a team, and you schedule Angleton, Ike and Elkins, then no one would blink an eye. It would be on par with what everyone else is playing. The fact that a 4a team is playing those teams, it makes it seem like a difficult schedule. This is why it is obviously a little more of an even playing field for a 5a team that comes down to 4a. That rigorous pre-district schedule for Dayton would essentially carry on at that difficulty level for 7 more games for a 10 game season if you were in 5a.

I went to check out Baytown Lee today. They had a controlled scrimmage. I was there for about 90 minutes. It's hard to really tell much, because I don't really know who was who out there. Ruben was starting at QB. Zellars was running second string at qb. Zellars performed better. Ruben threw two picks at least, maybe three. Zellars is a much better runner and is a better decision maker. Ruben has the stronger arm. It was EXTREMELY windy out there, so the passing game was suspect. #6 on the defense, not sure who that is, had two interceptions. He also played receiver some and did well there. Keith Johnson looked pretty good at running back. The defense looked better than I suspected they would. They have a lot of young kids in the secondary. #6 and #2 both played well. #2 is the backup running back and did well there too. I believe his name is Franklin and he will be a sophomore next year. A lot of guys are going to have to play both ways I think. I did not see Jaevon Richardson out there which scares me a little bit. I have heard that Nathaneil Scott and Jeffrey Patton have both moved, so that's two down...if Richardson moves it will be a HUGE blow as he's ranked in the top 25 in the state for class of 2012 players. I am pretty excited about the prospects. They have some nice athletes to choose from for the skill positions. The linebacking crew will be thin as well as both lines. -
I don't think anyone at Baytown Lee thinks that 4A will be easy.

Memorial won the high jump, long jump, triple jump, 400 meters, 400 relay, 1600 relay, 110 hurdles They did quite well even without the B teams help.
