  1. here is what I have seen from my kids that committed to just D1's that were LHP in the last 6 years: LHP to Baylor - 86 Velo LHP to Texas Tech - 85 Velo LHP to Sam Houston - 81 Velo LHP to Lamar - 88 Velo with no command Was told by many of college coaches that RHP bottom was 88 but LHP are a different. However when you have a gun on their own pitching staff at practice/interaquad 85-87 was the average by most of the pitching staff. Seen this with my own eyes a couple of times. I was sitting next to the guy recording the velo for scrimmage. To me this is crazy.. I had a RHP that had tremendous command, had 4 pitches that he could spot anywhere and would dominate batters... hardly anyone got good wood on him.. watched him pitch a 68 pitch complete game in the Regional semi and dominate in 6.3 innings in a State Simi final. College D1 did not want cause he sat at 85-86 and topped out at 87... To me he was a real pitcher.. Don't make since to me.. But that is what they want. Also what these recruiting events are saying and what these college are recruiting are slightly different. As to your fielders velo vs pitching velo its simple.. fielders are based on a turn and burn.. pitchers velo from the bump.. you are able to throw harder on a turn and burn
  2. hear is the realization and then I'll stop. College ball is not what it is cracked up to be. D1 and down.. Workouts at 530am, day filled with school, 2pm meetings, practice till 730pm, and mandatory tutorials. Its a 530am-9pm a day job. No time for socializing and and enjoying the College experience... a player really has to enjoy the process to be happy. Hence why so many return after the 1st year. Here is the real truth that parents need to hear from ALL coaches.. high school-select(and be wary of anyone who is requiring money for services and tells you different..): College is only allowed 11.7 scholarships to give out to a 35-50 man roster. Most colleges will bring in 70+ (12 catchers) in the fall and let some go by start of spring.. Its a cut throat business.. Most kids, if they get any kind of athletic scholarship, are lucky to get 20%-30%. Very, very seldom does a player receive a full ride. If you are a parent or player and are spending all this money for travel ball, lessons, and exposure as a investment for school... then really just save that money and put into savings or investments for College costs... you will come out way ahead.. and your kid will be happier enjoying the college experience. If you are doing these and spending the money to: help you kid's skills to help him become a better player and teammate, for the kids enjoyment, better understanding of the game, to help him learn life lessons, family fun.. really anything other than the expectation that your child will receive a college athletic scholarship.. then by all means do it.. I would also stress the importance of GRADES to your child.. grades, class rank, SAT are EXTREEMLY important.. academic scholarships along with grants for low socioeconomic are the deciding factors in recruitment. Sorry, all this talk about baseball college recruitment has got me fired up.. so many do not understand the reality and there are many who take advantage of that situation and it is upsetting.
  3. Totally agree on numbers.. I would go a step further and say the velo numbers you quoted are for RHP.. LHP is a totally different beast. I would also say height and body frame play a role.
  4. I'm not TradenupBH but I can see why his post is directed towards you. I think it has to do with the concept you and longball24 are vocalizing. The concept that a Freshman is not D1/college material if he does not start on Varsity is a dangerous and destructive belief especially when you vocalize it. Parents and fans need to understand the process and realize statements like this is causing damage to kids. Kids and parents listen and will believe statements like this cause they have no first hand knowledge about the subject. I have seen kids completely devastated cause they did not make varsity and drag up. I have seen kids completely break down in a dugout and cry cause they were not successful at the Varsity level as a freshman. I have seen freshman kids refuse to go down to JV/Soph teams so they could get the experience and boost their self-confidence cause of this stigma.. They dont understand the skill/age difference (14 vs 18) and they would rather ride the bench.. I have seen the devastation these statements cause so I take it personally.. I think if more people understood the process and trusted it things would be better for the players and their families. Just a concept to think about
  5. Again I totally disagree. There are not many who start their freshman year. Also just cause they dont start till Soph or JR. does not mean the will not EXCEL in college ball or vice versa. I have also seen some Freshman starters get passed up. Most of the examples I gave you are very recent.. I have coached high school ball for the last 15 years and see what is going on high school baseball teams. I have seen MANY JV players that had D1 offers and were committed before they even picked up a varsity ball. Now you are correct in another post... Recruitment has gone away from the High School level... In the past, usually if a College is "considering" offering they will reach out to the High School Coach. A trend that is going down unfortunately.. Recruitment is in Summer Ball. College Coaches, mostly assistants, do not make much money.. their money is made at prospect camps and also they don't have the time to see a player due to their team Fall Season.. they see talent and talent alone at these camps and predict what they think they will become by JR year in college.. some have bottom numbers (pitcher has to reach 88 or a player has to run a certain speed) . They do not see the mental side of the game which is why you see a lot more transfers and dropouts now of days IMO. Also those examples were not from the 80's.. Ben was in mid 90's.. my relative in mid 2000's along with Jay Bruce.
  6. I totally disagree. there is not just a example here and there. In fact, I would say the opposite and easily back it up with facts... there are more people who played college ball that were 1st year varsity high school starters as a Sophomore or JR. Just at PNG alone, out of all the players that played at the next level over the past 8 years, (which is quite a bit) I can think of only 2-3 that were starters as freshman. In fact 2-3 of the guys that went to next level were 1st year starters as a SR! Ben Broussard played like 7-8 years in the majors and did not make the varsity high school staring lineup till he was a JR. and that was on a crappy HJ team. Had a relative that was drafted and played 9 years pro ball that did not even make his high school local team till he was a JR... he was cut his Freshman and Sophomore year. Did not play varsity till he was a SR. Jay Bruce (someone correct me if I'm wrong.. could be mistaken) did not start on varsity his Freshman year.. the last 9 kids I sent to play college ball were not Varsity starters their freshman year.. most not their Soph year either. Reason: body development. most Freshman do not have the body development to compete at a Varsity level.
  7. EXACTLY... his record does NOT indicate his Coaching success. that was my whole point
  8. really.... I have nothing against Peevey. He is a great man and coach... but Westbrook finished 3rd in district in 2019.. in 2020 they were 4-6 and finished 4th in district.. All under Peevey. Do you think if they were returning to the State Championship on a consistent basis like they did in 2018 that the success of the program would have not made a difference... then I don't know what to say... That would go against 99% of coaches mentality.. Some might say CL improved the WB program from the previous year and they would be technically correct. .
  9. No doubt they should have kept BF. But just cause you come from great programs does not mean you will succeed as a HC/AD. Wins and losses are not necessarily a indicator either. I can think of a local coach that has had success at Lamar, SFA, University of Florida, and recently Central Michigan that was a HC/AD at a local school and his record was 0-20 in his early years. Coach Alverez was 5-15 his first 2 years at Ennis. Then won state 2 years after that. Do you think Pevey's decision to leave could have been IN PART is he "seen the writing on the wall" on up and coming athletes? A 5-5 record his first year could have been a major accomplishment. I'm just saying IMO winning is not a definite at PNG. it takes the right kind of mind and qualities to succeed there. I believe if he is chosen to be Chief, He will be good.
  10. If you are looking at wins and losses only then you do not see the big picture. If that was the case BF, the PNG Head Coach with the most wins in PNG history, should have never got the job in the first place. He was never a head coach before he got the job. BF has great qualities that helped PNG's success. I see CL, that has those same qualities, doing the same..
  11. Agreed up till last line.. I can name PLENTY of local D1 players that did not play Varsity their freshman and some not until their Jr. year.. heck I can name some local talent that played PROFESSIONALLY in the Majors that did not make Varsity till their JR year in the 4A level..
  12. to name a few without deep thought: Very experienced: Coached at multiple levels, knows how to adjust due to players abilities, Very knowledgeable about multiple sports, has many collegiate contacts to help player recruitment. Personality: very approachable to community and kids, honest, full of integrity, high level in intensity, knows how to communicate well, knows how to lead by example, kids respond to him. He knows the community and how it operates(very important at PNG).
  13. 99% Correct.. Chuck is a great man and perfect for this job. I agree with everything stated except the statement in bold. From what I'm hearing its his to turn down.. but again.. JMO
  14. Do you not think Sulphur Springs had their guy already? Maybe by contact of Coaches like a former OC that is really close to BF... like JR in Chapel hill? I think they did.
  15. I find this real interesting (being sarcastic): The PNG Head Football/AD position is NOT posted on Texas High School Coaches Association web site. That is going to limit the applications... look at WOS... Administration did not post on THSCA and only 13 applicants... IMO they got their guy already.. really no surprise. like I said people already know. PNG nation will be happy with him.. Good Coach with a lot of experience at multiple levels of football.
  16. I sure the local guys knew who they wanted and realized they had no chance. As for people outside the area... I don't believe the job was posted on Texas High School Coach Association web site... Usually Coaches take this as a sign... "don't apply.. we got our guy.. this is just a formality"..
  17. Absolutely that one board member has that much power. That person.. along with another board member that did not like BF for political reasons..(not going to address this on a public forum).. have a lot of pull with other board members.. I know that for a fact... As for the IPad thing... I know how it was used for a fact... seen it.. it was not used for FILMING. PERIOD!! rules state you cant have a IPad in press box for any reason.. they served there punishment and moved on.
  18. lets address your "red flags": Assistants leaving; almost all of the assistants that left PNG left for PROMOTIONS.... they left for Head Football/AD positions, OC, DC, Head Coach in other sports, higher paying jobs or Admirative positions. His long time DC left so he could market himself in other areas. Please address these "red flags" as a absolute complement to the man not a insult. IPad thing: yes it LOOKED bad. I agree.. but not used for filming hence why there was not a outcry or a "swept under the rug." It was investigated. As for why you don't understand why people are upset: There is no doubt this whole thing is political. A board member cant do what he did towards the end of last season in front of people and it NOT GET AROUND. If you have not heard what he did then I can see why you have no understanding of why people are upset. As for BF I have the upmost respect. He could have lashed out. He could have made public the actions of certain people by going to news outlets. He could have giving in to political complaints or slowed down effort on preparation for feature games. Instead he chose to take the high road by keeping his mouth shut, concentrating his efforts on the kids, and looking for a different program after the season was over. He is a great man and deserves the upmost respect. I wish him nothing but success in his feature endeavors. That being said I believe the next Chief will do fine. The PNG community does install a mentality that makes them PNG. The honor, pride and tradition is like no other school. I just hope the next one, (which most already know who's job it is to take/turndown) chooses to do things the right way for kids sake.
  19. I see it says steps out with both feet. what about steps out with one foot?
  20. Scheme?? do you think DH/CT/TF are the only ones that run spread with 10/11/20 personal?? the only ones to run that kind of Defense?? The only ones that has those plays?? you think they made these up and are the founders and are the only ones who can have success?? Who is to say that a outsider can't come in and actually do better! WOS is WOS not solely because of the AD's program and schemes. WOS is WOS because of they type of Athletes the community produces. It starts a flag football and the pop warner program. I have seen the type of practices and work ethic the community demands of their football at a young age. When they get to High School they have a edge already! I personally think almost anyone who gets this job will be successful as long as the community gives the new AD, who ever it is, the chance. Scheme is easy when you have the players.
  21. absolutely agree.. A clear case of abuse of power!!
  22. I don't understand why people think that if they do not get a particular person that the whole athletic department will go into the crapper. Just cause the community wants one person does not mean they will be the only one that can be successful.. WOS is WOS.. they have the athletes and community support.. That is what is creating the winning tradition not just a small group of Coaches. winning is NOT going to be a problem WOS.. PS.. the community wanted someone else in Crosby, they did not get their wish and now have played more games in the last 2 years (31) than any other 5A.. Just saying
  23. Mr. Ump, I have a question that was told to by a umpire and wanted to check: batter is in the box calls time and steps out of the box.... home umpire does NOT grant time and a legal pitch is thrown... I was told it is a automatic strike... I was also told that if the pitch is a strike it counts as 2 strikes... so if the batter has 1 strike already called on him.. and the pitch is in the strike zone.. it counts as strike 2 and 3 and the batter is out... IS THIS THE RULE??
