I announce my transfer...

Top 10%...actually chose SHSU over Texas and Houston. Your administration would not have liked the headaches though of having the TT on campus -- probably weren't used to those from the student leaders on campus. I think the SHSU administration and I had a love/hate relationship. My favorite was SHSU's violation of a state law. They told me I was wrong, sent a letter to various figure-heads around the state telling them I was wrong and then, sure enough -- the Chancellor's office brought the hammer down on them putting yours truly in the right. While I did not agree with the law in question, the university was in violation. We had our moments of working together and then had our moments on other sides of the ring. Good times...will cherish those forever -- they capped it with giving me the highest honor for a male student leader as a senior. So, who is coming to SHSU in our trade to give you aries? -

Scalp'em... Trust me -- you will not be playing an FBS team (i.e North Texas, Southern Miss, etc) in year one. Those schools won't play you because you will not count as a "counter". You need to offer 53 scholarships a year for two years to count as a "counter" which means you count towards their six wins needed for bowl eligibility. So, in year two you can do it. UCA played La Tech last year in their second year... If you can get South Alabama and Georgia State in home-and-homes, that'd be great for your program. Old Dominion is starting up football in 2009, so that may be a good one as well. Charlotte is not going to be a football school just yet. I do expect two sub-Div I opponents, if not more in year one. What I feel would be the best schedule... Home: Georgia State, Texas Southern, Arkansas-Monticello, Alcorn State, Nicholls State, Henderson State Away: South Alabama, Prairie View A&M, McNeese State, Southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi Valley State That's two games against new FCS programs (Ga State and South Alabama), four SWAC games (TxSo, PVA&M, Valley and Alcorn), two regional sub-Div Is with a history of play the SLC (Arkansas-Monticello and Henderson State), three SLC squads (nearby foe McNeese and the two 'Cajun Corner' schools -- SLU and Nicholls -- that have trouble with scheduling). Lamar will have to be an independent for two years, SLC in year three...no specific rules, but that's what Southeastern La. did. SLC will help with scheduling, year two -- expect a near full Southland slate -- some schools already are going to have problems getting Lamar in to the schedule in 2010 and even in 2011 (it's why UCA and Northwestern State played in early September for an SLC game this past year). -
A SHSU freshman from Kingwood, Texas -- who does not even have a bio on our web site -- won the medalist honors in a playoff. Nice! Congrats Cards -- go win the NCAAs!

Ruckdad, we anxiously await your announcement...

The Southland schedule would provide that -- would have to get a few SWAC schools, a Samford or Jacksonville State perhaps and eventually, when you are eligible to do so as a counter, an FBS school in the region. Not so many FCS squads in this region as we'd like -- so it will not be as easy as you think if you put those parameters over things, though the SWAC has lifted the mandate, so it may not be so bad... -
Lamar should contact Georgia State about getting a home-and-home together as both schools will be starting football in 2010. Perhaps the two schools can play a "scrimmage" in 2009. Not sure how a game in the Georgia Dome in 2010 would not be attractive for recruits looking at coming to Lamar... ------------------ GSU plans first football game for 2010 Student athletic fees raised to fund gridiron program By ANDREA JONES The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 04/15/08 Georgia State University's long planned football team is becoming a reality and its students will foot part of the bill. The Board of Regents on Tuesday approved an $85 increase in Georgia State's athletic fee for fall semester, paving the way for university to play its first game in 2010. A football team has long been the dream of retiring GSU president Carl Patton, who has overseen dramatic changes at the former-commuter school in his 16 years at the helm. Still, Patton and other GSU officials declined to comment on Tuesday, preferring to wait until Thursday, when they said an official announcement will be made. Regents approved tuition and fees for all 35 public colleges and universities at a meeting in Columbus. Georgia State University's overall fees will go from $494 to $600 in the fall, the largest hike among schools. Georgia Tech's fees will increase by $19, to $592 in the fall. UGA students will pay $24 more, to $587. A committee of Georgia State students approved the proposed jump earlier in 2007. For several years, the school has been morphing from a commuter-based community into a more traditional university. By 2015, Patton has said, GSU plans to house 20 percent of its 50,000 full- and part-time students on campus, a sea change for the institution. Georgia State has raised more than $1 million dollars in pledges toward the football program. The team will likely play its first season in the Georgia Dome. [Hidden Content]

Will probably knock that out tomorrow unless the places are determined earlier in the afternoon than they have been -- will be out at a baseball game tonight.

Even though you have not won yet -- myself and another Kat fan or few are giving props to the Cards golf team. See, some of us can acknowledge a great performance. [Hidden Content]

Lots of love for Cards golf, a mistake about SHSU taking two of three from Cards (when Kats swept) in baseball, but it's great to see we have someone who is finally able to update the Area Colleges blogs and of all things, able to hit on a subject like men's golf. You Cards need to show your support, so we can continue to get more and more SLC talk on the blog and of course, a strong Lamar presence, will lead to more posts about the Cards... SLC talk is a good thing! [Hidden Content]

Saw a recent article about the coaching hire that mentioned Centenary as possibly going to Div III. Have to admit, I had not heard that nor seen that anywhere else, so take it for what it's worth...

04/13/08 LU vs. Sam Houston State/Sam Wins!

It's called Sunday baseball in the Southland... Expect the unexpected! -
This coming from a program that has failed to find success in the SLC tournament as of late. Throw in the fact it's in Huntsville, that's going to help...if the pitching continues to be strong and the Kats get as high a seed as possible in order to draw a very winnable first game (though nothing is guaranteed in the "lowly" SLC as you guys like to call it), I like their odds...
-
7-2 Bot 5, SHSU Gallant, that was his fifth start this year last night... The Kats starter today, Duguay, is just starting his second game of the season... Kats have plenty of arms to be a threat in the SLC tournament and that's without our ace and All-SLC pitcher Jacob Howard who is out this year and may be out next year...wow!

Varies by league, it's not an NCAA-specific rule. Some leagues do the mercy rule in league play only during the get-away days (Sunday). As it relates to OOC play, namely during mid-week games, the coaches work out an agreement before the game in most cases...

SHSU vs Lamar (through two games)... Runs: 32 to 10 Hits: 41 to 18 Nice!
-
I find that hard to believe that Tubbs does not want to stay long term in the SLC. He's doing a respectable job as far as making his voice heard in this conference as he works to "improve" it...
-
He was a SHSU assistant before he landed in San Marcos. Major part of our 2004 run. I think he's going to be a finalist. Tubbs would be in the wrong not to give him a up close and personal look considering the names I've seen do not as many SLC ties (since you don't want Jim Bob) as Norton...
-
Ben Norton would be the best hire if you want someone that knows how to win in the SLC... Time at SHSU, McNeese and now at Texas State - San Marcos. Graduate of SFA. Vidor native. Recruits Golden Triangle. Would love nothing more than to coach at Lamar. [Hidden Content]

Seems they got a great pick-up in Ben Braun... The joke is already out there...Brains and Braun! -
Looks like you guys completed quite a few home-and-homes this past season... Lamar is in a 2 for 1 with Texas Tech, right? Think they did that with Centenary, Northwestern St and Sam Houston State as well. What I know regarding anyone and everyone's schedule, hope you can find out whatever info you can as well... Nicholls is playing in a four-team round robin with Illinois State, UC-Santa Barbara and TBD at the end of November. They also host New Orleans to complete a home-and-home. SHSU plays at Texas Tech and Central Florida. Texas Southern and Schreiner comes to Huntsville.
-
SLU has a very strong women's program...the fact you guys have moved up as quickly as you have is astonishing. It'll be interesting to see how far along you move next year, if you can catch SLU. With you guys getting as good as you are, I've even recommended to a Div. I tennis coach that they schedule you and I do not believe he has ever scheduled the Cards...

ABR3 and others... Question, will the upgraded stadium include a proper track and field complex? Lamar is part of the group of schools that does not have the facilities to meet the requirements to hold an SLC outdoor meet, which puts this championship on a rotating basis among several schools in the conference,. Seems only fitting for Lamar to continue their upgrades to include track and field, may be better for their team...

Texas State - San Marcos already announced their plans to leave by announcing they will move to FBS in job postings, at public meetings on campus and the such. One thing to look into it, another to publicly advertise that you are doing it... They will leave the SLC a year before the moratorium is lifted and will play around as an Independent for a year. Actually benefits Lamar, or the few of you, who would like to see the Cards play a full SLC slate in year one of football...
