  1. Troy had a very successful FCS program (they tormented the SLC during their brief stay in what was then the SFL) and made a nice enough transition to FBS. I think we'll see a similar progression from Western Kentucky, who even won a Div I national title in 2003 before getting crushed by SHSU in the playoffs in 2004. Troy was no start-up...

  3. With baseball wrapping up in the wee hours of the morning with the Nicholls-Southeastern baseball game, the end of your time in the SLC East division for at least two years occurs and you guys begin your time in the SLC West. You looking forward to some tougher competition? Outside of SFA, you get all your Texas rivals twice in hoops and volleyball -- which should definitely be an upgrade. As a fan of SHSU, I'm upset we're losing SFA to the SLC East as they have tended to be our toughest rival, but understand that this setup is what they thought was best in the SLC for the time being and so be it... Article from NWST-area newspaper on SLC West dominance... [Hidden Content] I think it's not really cyclical as the Commish says. As another article states in the same paper... [Hidden Content]
  4. USF coach actually was born in Harlingen...they played at least two FCS schools from 1997 til 2003. Barely escaped Nicholls State in 2003. That program moved very quickly from I-AA Independent to I-A Independent to C-USA to Big East. They had the rest of their sports in the Sun Belt from the forming of the league until 1991. Went to the Metro, which became the C-USA. From there to the Big East.
  5. Not the best example...their coach is a known liar when it comes to their resume! Did you mean USF?
  6. Sorry... You guys may prove me wrong down the stretch. Year one, you guys will go 7-4 at worse going against sub-Div I schools. All the wins (better) come against the sub-Div I schools. Year two will be rough with a mostly Div I slate and then year three, your in the SLC. That's eight weeks of battles...UCA, NWST, Nich, SLU, SHSU, SFA, San Marcos and McNeese...
  7. Yep, sure did. Still not sure what to make of him, though thus far, I've liked his partnership with Rick Smith.
  8. Nah, don't care for the Cowboys like most of you do for the Cougars... I'm a Texans fan! ;D
  9. Let me relate to something you can understand. Clyde Drexler played in the NBA. Did that equate to a solid coach?
  10. Welcome to the Football Championship Subdivision, Coach Woodward! Looking forward to the Cards return to the SLC in 2012 (year three) and possible out of conference games in 2010 and 2011 against SLC competition.
  11. NCAA FBS football is the only sport that I know where the championship is not played out on the field of play. Tennis. Soccer. All others levels of football. Bowling. Table Tennis. You name it. The championship is played out on the field of the play. I do not believe in the system. In the current state of collegiate athletics, our institutions can not compete for the mythical national championship that is the BCS title. As I've stated time and time again, the NCAA does not recognize the BCS champion, they do recognize the NCAA Division I champion (from FCS). Your institution is currently set to play FCS football and that provides a far greater opportunity for a national title. Until the landscape of FBS football changes, our institutions have no business vying for a seat at the table. Under the current environment, both of our teams are destined for a spot in the "Beaumont Bumkpins/Weedeater Bowl". A playoff format, open to all conferences that meet standards, would allow for the seat at the table. Until such point, there's no reason for me to wish SHSU was a part of the FBS. SHSU and other schools can compete and win against the FBS schools (I believe the SLC has a .500 or above record against the Sun Belt with wins against institutions including Texas Christian and Boise State in the last decade). And at the same time, we can compete for a national title and have a fair shot at doing that. If you guys wish to be FBS, best of luck. Hope you enjoy that Bumpkins Bowl, as you have an even further chance at the mythical crystal ball than even your friends down I-10 on Scott St.
  12. A) The 'S' in FBS also stands for 'subdivision'. By your argument, it's a "part of football". In fact, it's the non-championship part of NCAA Division I football Considering the BCS is not a national championship, the only national championship I'd like to see SHSU win is the Division I national championship (note, that's the name -- not FCS national championship). The BCS national championship would be nice, but honestly, does a Sam Houston State or for that matter, a Lamar, have any chance? Of course, not. Both our schools can not succeed in the current climate that is big money football. And yes, your team will fail if the community believes your team competes in Division II. That would be a slap in the face of the 63 Division I players at Lamar and more importantly, I find it hard to believe that Southeast Texas would support a Div II program at Lamar. Didn't the community turn their backs on the program when they moved down from I-A to what was then known as I-AA? If anything, I'm standing up for your program and going against LUPatriot's ignorance on the subject. Division I football is what your institution would have and that's some high quality football, not Div II level football. Lamar needs to educate the community that it is a Division I program and work hard to get money games starting in year two against FBS programs that the fan base is familiar with, to help get the point across. Getting in the playoffs would help things out as it made a huge difference on the football program in San Marcos.
  13. Division II football? Are you kidding me? I know this is the mindset that many in the Lamar community have. Heck, you guys were taking shots about the SLC and football, calling it Div II football as well, before you got one of these 'Div II' teams yourself... If your team fails from the get-go, a large part of that will be the mindset that your school does not play Div I football. Seems your school has a large marketing campaign ahead of them to educate Joe Patriot in the SE Texas community. No wonder Billy boy said that the program would need to be FBS. FYI, LUPatriot -- Lamar will get to compete for something that Texas, Texas Tech and LSU can not -- a Division I national championship. That's after all, why it's called the NCAA Division I FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP SUBDIVISION!
  14. Marlin was a Div I assistant at Alabama when he came to SHSU, so he was not coming from a JUCO. Yes, he was a JUCO head coach (who won a national championship at that), but he had been a Division I assistant at ULM, Marshall and Houston Baptist having learned from good coaches in Vining and wasn't it Iba at HBU? Outside of four years in NFLE and a stint with my name sake, your boy has not coached a lick of Division I football nor has he ever started a program. He's been a JUCO guy full and through. I actually with agree that UNLV that this hire is not going to do any extra good for your program as some other names mentioned would have -- even that of lil Franchione, who despite being a JUCO guy, does have the 'name'. I was thinking it would have been best if you hired a guy with SLC experience, if you didn't get the 'name'. Then again, we'll see in year one of the SLC. Will Lamar be up to snuff or can they claim their spot back?
  15. That's the media being the media... Texas State University System Board of Regents. Same group meeting May 15-16, 2008 at Texas State University-San Marcos according to the TSUS web site.
  16. BREAKING NEWS: Lamar could select football coach tonight, Navarro's Woodard a finalist for job From Staff Reports Navarro could be looking for a new football coach Friday. Coach Ray Woodard is a finalist for the Lamar University head coaching job and a could be named as early as Thursday night by the Lamar Board of Trustees, according to Navarro President Dr. Richard Sanchez. Sanchez confirmed reports by the Beaumont Enterprise that Woodard was a finalist. “Word on his future could be conveyed as early as (Friday) if the trustees make that decision tonight,†Sanchez said. Woodard is listed as one of 11 finalists for the job by the Beaumont Enterprise, which includes former Lamar coach Larry Keenan. Lamar students passed a resolution on Jan. 29 to raise student fees to fund the return of Cardinal football for the first time since 1989. The Cardinals will play in the Southland Conference, a member of the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly 1-AA), with current members Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, Central Arkansas, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas State, Northwestern State, McNeese State and Nicholls State, [Hidden Content]
  17. Nope. There's some very impressive Div II jobs out there. Mel Tjeerdsma of NW Missouri State is probably one of the more attractive names in the region. Unlike those on this board, I have a pretty good feel for Division II and Football Championship Subdivision football. I don't just drool at the screen over Football Bowl Subdivision football.
  18. MFFL, as a head coach...Todd Whitten has had .500 or above seasons in 8 of 9 seasons at the helm, whether it Tarleton State or Sam Houston State. Throw out the .500 season, he has had a winning record in 7 of 9 seasons. After a 3-7 season in 2005, the Kats have gone 6-5 and then 7-4. We are moving in the right direction and Whitten's recruits are paying off in big dividends. So, 2 of 3 years in Division I -- a winning record. And 5 of 6 in Division II -- a winning record. "Not impressive at all"...you must be mistaken. Lamar would love to have winning seasons in 7 of 9 when they hit the gridiron. MFFL, get your head out of the daisies...
  19. Lamar better not win the SLC and make the playoffs in year one, considering they are ineligible for both. I guess you can chalk up the fact Lamar will not be in the SLC to year three may be a reason they "should" win the SLC that year, eh? Lamar Time Frame 2009 Redshirts for all, scrimmages 2010 FCS Independent (6 or 7 Div I games) 2011 FCS Indpendent (9 or 10 Div I games), become eligible as an FBS counter (in order to play FBS squads for $$$) 2012 SLC full-time member
  20. Coachacola, you need to look around. Your friends on this board have been talking a great deal about the kind of team, the program you will have, going right to the top of the SLC, if not to FBS before then. Sure, UNLV is in a class of his own on most things football like that, but others are on board too. If Woodward is your man, you are not going to make a splash in the FCS game and not even register a blip on most FCS radars around the nation. If you want to see how you go about adding football with a splash, look at Old Dominion or Georgia State. In each case, had well-known individuals involved in the start-up and actively promoting the brand of football. They have done everything the right way and are doing a good job of publicizing. Georgia State is even around the same step in the process as you are and they are getting quite a bit of notoriety...
  21. I'd like to thank Lamar for joining the FCS. We've had a hard time getting Texas Southern on the schedule for an easy Division I victory. That worry is no longer a concern, as our schedule has improved, but now it looks like we got a tap-in on our slate in a few years. By not making the splash that many in the community wanted and the hype provided by the fan base falling far short of expectations, it looks like we don't have much longer til we get the closest thing to the Tigers...the Cardinals. Texas State - San Marcos is dusting off that hand me down cellar dweller sign you gave them back in the 1980s. McNeese is licking their chops a the prospect of having a one-sided rivalry which will be a scrimmage for them before their near annual playoff run. SFA is just tickled to death that they may even win an SLC game, against a Texas team of all things! And the list goes on... Just my .02 and yes, UNLV -- I know your expectations just got robbed from you. You are welcome in Huntsville! We got some good BBQ at the church on Montgomery Road for you to share with us. And who knows? We may be FBS someday.
  22. Are you so sure? How many SLC athletes this year were also on men's football teams? I do not think it will make for your team to "improve greatly" per say as there's several factors involved in that situation. SHSU had a few in the past, but those numbers have diminished to some degree. We did get two or three SLC titles out of a VB player though...
  23. Comes down to baseball. UTSA is actually first in the SLC right now in baseball (and has clinched the regular season title). In doing so, they have clinched the Commish Cup. Six Texas schools at the top with just A&M-CC preventing complete domination by the state of Texas. 24. I really do not think Woodward is going to make the huge impact that we all were led to believe that Lamar would make when they announced their head coach. I'm actually rather shocked and am interested to see if this comes to fruition, because this hiring is less than flattering... If this is your hire and everything else does not measure as big a splash as many of you claimed, there will probably be a line of people ready to go get the old sign from back in the 1980s reserving your spot at the basement of the SLC. Words that have reached my ears say some of the other claims made on this board are a bit short of the hype...
  25. Count your 'Cup Watch' days as numbered...heading into the final day, Lamar is not well-positioned in men's or women's track and field. They are going to lose some major points. Both Lamar and San Marcos would eliminate the deficit in women's track and field alone if the current numbers stood.
