  1. From CollegeInsider.com... SOUTHLAND Player of the Year: Josh Alexander (Stephen F. Austin) Most Valuable Player: Ryan Bright (Sam Houston State) and Kenny Dawkins (Lamar) Coach of the Year: Danny Kaspar (Stephen F. Austin) and Steve Roccaforte (Lamar) Alexander and Bright were also named Mid-Major All-Americans by CollegeInsider.com. All-American List: [Hidden Content] Awards: [Hidden Content]
  2. And what if Lamar did not qualify for the men's tournament? Would that do any favors to the Southland Conference? We've seen the problem on a smaller scale (with other conference tournaments), but basketball -- that's trouble.
  3. Article from Corpus Christi mentions opening the field to all 11 teams (12 when UCA gets eligible)... [Hidden Content] Count me as in! Let's expand to 11 (12 when UCA is eligible). That'd be great! Campus sites for first round games. With 11 teams, you'd have the top five get byes and three first-round games (6 v 11, 7 v 10 and 8 v 9). 12 teams would give byes to the top four with four first rounders (5 v 12, 6 v 11, 7 v 10 and 8 v 9). Let everyone in! That's what March Madness is about. Sure, you could have No. 11 make a Cinderella run, but more power to them, especially if they win a first round game on the road.
  4. Lamar is already going to have one, if not two years as an FCS Independent. Unfortunately, Texas State - San Marcos, who already announced a move to FBS (Teis and Trauth did this "holding hands together" shtick) has not been removed from the conference following this year. Hopefully they announce it soon and follow their by-laws. I'd love if Texas State - San Marcos got the boot, because they'd be hard-pressed as an Independent...it definitely would not help them find another conference.
  5. Incorrect...on UTSA web site, they quote FIU and even call it an "expedited" timeline, so this is as fast as it goes... 2002-03 First Division I-AA football game/I-AA Independent (Year One) 2003-04 Division I-AA schedule/I-AA Independent (Year Two) June 2004 Applied for multidivisional membership for I-A 2004-05 Division I-AA Schedule/Some Sun Belt/ReClassification Year I (Year Three) 2005-06 Division I-A Schedule/Full Sun Belt Schedule/ReClassification Year II (Year Four) 2006-07 Division I-A schedule/Play full Sun Belt schedule/Active Division I-A member (bowl eligible) Sun Belt Conference member So, in year three of football, you'd be playing an FCS schedule with a few FBS games as you begin your transition. You would not play a full FBS schedule til year four and not even be an active FBS member til year five. [Hidden Content] ABR3...UNLV just needs to come back to the real world. He loves Lamar, but he needs to sit down and read up on NCAA football. He's obviously not that well-versed in the FCS level, the moratorium, how the transition works or even on the SLC by-laws (please Lamar, announce FBS in May, if not sooner!)...
  6. The moratorium will say as much... It will be over by the time Lamar would announce their intentions (I hope they do so on the day they announced their head coach for reasons related to protecting the membership, read the SLC by-laws if you want more info there), but I really think Lamar is going to have a much tougher time to make the move. We'll see you in the SLC in 2012...
  7. So, Billy Tubbs is going to change NCAA rules now, is he? FBS in year three of football? You are just trying to get rattle me, but you once again prove, that even your attempts do not match reality. You are the most unrealistic person in the bunch on this board and the others acknowledge it (as I've seen on two other boards comments re: your logic). Your beginning to remind me of Pat from KatFans.com, who hasn't been a sports fan for very long and even though he comes across as fairly knowledgeable, he's not...
  8. Today? You again show how much you do not know. All future members of the SBC must play FBS football. Lamar does not. Simple as that. Five years from now, Lamar still will not have FBS. South Alabama will not be FBS til 2013. That's five years from now. Lamar starts their playing a year after South Alabama. The earliest for Lamar would be 2014, six years from now. The earliest Lamar could be accepted into the SBC was 2014 unless because Lamar is committed to FBS football (again, we won't know much there based on the moratorium), that they would accept them. I'm afraid Billy Tubbs does not run the NCAA... Okay UNLV, your turn again to put some more bad information out there...
  9. It's a bad, bad comparison... South Alabama already has a spot waiting for them in the Sun Belt Conference. Lamar on the other side of the spectrum does not. The moratorium does not impact a squad like USA, while Lamar will have to deal with whatever comes from the results of the moratorium. If Billy Tubbs is set on moving to an FBS conference here in the short-term, it'd be nice if he gave up whatever power he is yielding over the rest of the conference. He hasn't had the chance to mess with the football-side yet, but if anything is certain, he has not been friendly to the conference in basketball...
  10. Can't say I am too impressed (though I know more will apply)...of the list, I'd say Koenning, Norton (who knows this conference and is currently in San Marcos as an assistant for the Bobcats) and Pope are the best candidates who have applied...
  11. Here's the announced games of the ODU schedule thus far...this is a first year program in 2009, doing exhibitions in 2008... You have seen SLU's first year schedule before. Old Dominion Schedule vs Monmouth (not full scholarship, Div I) vs Presbyterian (new full scholarship Div I) vs Georgetown (non scholarship Div I) vs Chowan (sub Div I) at Jacksonville (non scholarship Div I) Lamar will not play a full SLC slate in 2010. UNLV, until it comes out of Tom Burnett's mouth himself, it's not going to happen...it's absolutely bad for the development of your program.
  12. On AGS, the sentiment is that Lamar will not be able to compete in the SLC til 2012 after they have played two years of FCS football (seeing that 2009 does not count). [Hidden Content] According to a fan from the NEC, who has seen teams go through the process, "NCAA rule is that their second year they must play at least half of their games vs. Division I - only the first year is an exception to the rule." Looking at the SLC by-laws, I could not find anything specific regarding the rules for membership/football for pre-existing schools that do not have football already. Again, it would surprise me if SLC football and Lamar were intertwined in year one (2010), though the SLC will do their part to help with scheduling... Hope Billy Tubbs is making calls and setting up a schedule now as I know quite a few schools, many in the SLC included, already have quite a few of their games in 2010 set (which is another reason I think Lamar will not be able to play a full schedule)...
  13. Texas State - San Marcos has always outspent the other schools and did not get the results that the other schools have achieved (one playoff appearance in over 20 years of Div I football)... $100k would probably put Lamar's coordinators at the top of the SLC. There's a few coaches making less than that and I think the top coaching salary in the SLC is UCA -- can't recall, but I think it's $125k-$150k. Think SFA and San Marcos were paying in the $110-125k range for their head coaches.
  14. Lamar should be able to win a few more than two games if they schedule as they should -- instead of this participating in the SLC schedule garbage. If they really do their part in scheduling properly, you guys could end up with 7-8 home games in season #1, which I think would be great for the buildup of your program... 2 SWAC programs 2 FCS non-scholarship 2-3 SLC squads 3-4 non-Div I 1-2 scholarship FCS (winnable)
  15. Lamar would not win the SLC their first year...they'd be lucky to get two wins in the conference if they played a full schedule. The week in and week out of the SLC is brutal, I do not think a young team would be able to deal with it on a week to week basis. This is not pee-wee football.
  16. What's this LU-Beaumont deal? That sounds funny... I'm really surprised Lamar wants to hop into full-SLC mode in 2010. I said it before, I doubt this will happen, though it does continually get brought up. Seems it makes more sense for Lamar to play in the SLC in year 2 or year 3 while the SLC will help Lamar with scheduling in 2010... No football program start-up over the last few years has played a full conference schedule their first year. Seems like it would not be beneficial for the program to do that...but Tubbs is the "mastermind" here and I am sure he knows what he's doing, even if there is no precedent... I'm going to confirm there is no precedent...by finding out what ODU is doing and what a few others have done...
  17. I do not recall a time in the last 10 years where the SWAC was above the SLC in terms of football. Even in McNeese's lean years, they knocked off the "Black College National Champions" (just as mythical as the BCS title) from Southern...Nicholls and SLU even took SWAC squads to task... You must have low expectations of your Lamar FB program...
  18. SHSU is above and beyond many Div I schools at the FCS level -- Lamar is truly not going to have a better facility than 100% of HS stadiums in the state of Texas by any stretch of the imagination. SHSU has continued to upgrade the facility. What will Lamar do when they show their hand? They may upgrade to one of the best in the conference (doubt they will be #1), but even then, it will be behind someone somewhere in Texas...
  19. Should be noted that the transfer rules have changed slightly...an FBS player needs to have two years of eligibility remaining in order to transfer outside of an NCAA waiver (see Bobby Reid with one year left moving to Texas Southern). SHSU has landed some great transfer QBs over the years, though we have had some busts as well. SHSU, among other schools, have made some nice runs on the back of transfers, but then you have teams like AppSt who routinely find the "diamonds in the rough" and "beat out" FBS schools all the time...
  20. A&M's new athletic director? Where's Bill Byrne going off to? Has he already announced he is leaving? I'm a big Bill Byrne fan -- particularly his "Wednesday Weekly"...
  21. UNLV, give us a breakdown of SLC stadiums since you like talking Southland stadiums...where does SHSU stand as far as conference stadiums? What do you think of Strawberry Stadium? Turpin? "The Hole"? Also, what do you think of other FCS stadiums around the nation? Have you seen New Hampshire's in comparison to Kidd Brewer Stadium at Appalachian State? Or what about Wash-Griz Stadium in Montana with the old New York Times Square video board in comparison to Texas Southern? There's a wide, wide range...but you wouldn't know about that...
  22. I'm surprised PHP is used for HS football games...still have not confirmed it out of that page you provided. SHSU continues to upgrade their facility as it's much more cost efficient for our institution and is not needed (like our new baseball/softball complex was) to be build a new one. In the last few years, we've added a video/scoreboard, some suites and constant upgrades to the track and field facility, which unlike Lamar, allows it to be suitable for conference track championships. A new sound system is on way as is a press box elevator and they will continue to spruce up the stadium. I think they could easily expand it if need be (we do not need it yet) and can continue to add amenities (like suites on the opposite side of the press box or increase the size of the pressbox while putting a second desk on the visitor side)...
  23. Correct -- it's an SSS. Soccer specific stadium. For all you Univ of Houston fans on this board, it's known as Robertson North since the Dynamo dominate FC Dallas there! UNLV, if you are going to attempt to compare apples to apples, check out Berry Center in Houston.
  24. Don't over react... As noted before on this board, "All posted classified positions must be advertised a minimum of five (5) working days before a job offer can be made. All professional, non-classified and faculty positions shall be open for a minimum of ten (10) days." This position is posted and after the time frame in which they are required to keep the position open for, they put until filled...which is just the usual way things work.
  25. UNLV -- you are a knowledgeable guy. What'd that third ranked national recruiting class of Lamar BKB do during their time in Southeast Texas? Should be noted that this is for this coming recruiting class, can't judge it til next year. SHSU already has plenty of freshmen playing a lot of innings especially on the pitching staff (you may recall the freshmen who led SHSU over Lamar earlier this year). Time will tell if these players blossom...too early to tell. We got some strong older players too (Stein, Verbick, Howard)... Recruiting rankings are garbage anyway...
